  • Which Free Agent's Non-signing This Fall Is The Most Surprising.

Among Free Agent players that remain unsigned, now less than a week before Christmas and almost seven weeks into the Free Agent signing period, which non-signing are you most surprised by? My top three (in this order ) would be: AJ Pierzynski, Michael Bourn, and Nick Swisher. Please feel free to add others to the list and briefly summarize the player's talents that make you surprised that they remain unsigned.

    1. AJ Pierzynski - What no one wants a guy that can start 130 games per year at catcher, hits .285lifetime (exceptionally high for catchers), who is coming off the best home run season of his career? Extremely durable - if he can catch in 111 games per year over the next four seasons, which would take him through age 39, Pierzynski could become just the 6th player in history to appear at catcher in 2,000 MLB games.

    2. Michael Bourn - He's Probably the best leadoff hitter/base stealer of the last five years. Bourn will probably reach .300 AND 200 HITS ONE YEAR SOON. He Hit .294 with over 190 hits in 2011. Bourn Led the National League in Stolen Bases three consecutive times from 2009 to 2011 before finishing as the runner-up in 2012. He's already stolen about 275 bases through age 29.

    3. Nick Swisher - Very consistent run producer. He's hit at least 25 home runs four times and reached a career high of 35, with about 21`0 career home runs.. Although he's only about a .255 lifetime hitter, he's a switch hitter who will drive in 85 to 90 runs year after year. Swisher had a talent for delivering late inning game-winning and game-tying hits and a several walkoff home runs in comeback situations for the Yankees the last few years.

Swisher is 2 for 36 with RISP in his postseason career. That's hard to do. I don't blame the Yankees for not wanting him back.
      My top 10 players:

      1. Babe Ruth
      2. Barry Bonds
      3. Ty Cobb
      4. Ted Williams

      6. Alex Rodriguez
      7. Hank Aaron
      8. Honus Wagner

So far I am most surprised about Bourn. There's generally more demand for those fast, table setting guys. However, his staggering amount of K's has hurt his upside. Swisher will land someplace - maybe Seattle. His veteran presence can only help a club like that - Cleveland also comes to mind.

Yes, although I can imagine what a circus Boras has made of his pitches to the various teams.

Boras being his agent to me is why he doesnt have a team yet and lesser lead off guys have landed somewhere...his price tag is probably way too high

Seems to me that teams are valuing their draft picks a bit more this year. All of the remaining names of significance out there turned down qualifiying offers and hence would be subject to a 1st round draft pick loss IIRC.

I'm still intrigued by Delmon Young. He showed only 2 years ago what he can become while only 25 years old. He's a bit of a wildcard, and is comingoff cleanout surgery, but he could be one of those low-risk - high-reward players as he only turns 27 this year with a lot of experience under his belt.

Pierzynski is rumored to be talking to Texas.

Swisher was rumored to be offered $50 million at 4 years from Cleveland.

Cano was on "real or rumor" on intentional talk. It's his last year under contract and Boras is his agent.
"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”

Surprised the Yanks haven't done with Cano what the Rays did with Longo.

Maybe they think they can get Chuck Knoblauch for 2 years at $15 million next year.

Yanks prefer the certainty of Motz signing players before they need to. Not sure that is the right approach but i am also sure Cano would not give the Yanks the crazy discount Eva gave the Rays.

Cano may be a Yankee, and I may be a Red Sox fan, but Robi Cano is my favorite player. If I was the Yankees I'd have had him locked up about two years ago.
