Does baseball have too much retro nostalgia?

I was going through the team uniform thread and have a question. Is there too much pseudo-retro nostalgia in baseball? From throwback uniforms to retro-design ballparks like Camden Yards and Citi Field, emulating the past, even a pseudo-past like the uniform below, seems to be common in baseball.

I don't really think so. The NHL, NFL and NBA use throwbacks, too.

I much prefer this to that sort of Space Age vibe that gave us blue polyester uniforms and those wretched cookie cutter multipurpose artificial turf stadiums in the early 70's.

This uniform needed more brown and they should have covered the Trop with wood paneling for that really retro look.

What a perfect sartorial example of true athletic apparel.
I see great things in baseball. It's our game - the American game.

Not really, Skipper Joe isn't an athlete, the jersey isn't sartorial, the sleeves are too long and loose, the pants have belts and the uniform isn't authentic.

The Rays uniform is pretty ugly but I think it's pretty cool that they would make a retro look to kinda make fun of the teams that wore ugly uniforms like that.
"(Shoeless Joe Jackson's fall from grace is one of the real tragedies of baseball. I always thought he was more sinned against than sinning." -- Connie Mack

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

Srsly. They're uniforms for cripes sakes. I watch baseball for the baseball, not whether to make sure the uniform is "sartorial" enough or not.

All right folks, we've gone down that fashion road enough here. There is a thread for it where it's more appropriate in the Photography section. Continually targetting a poster is not necessary.

It's gone too far when they make stuff up, like that uniform. It's like a bad soda advertisement from the 70's. He may as well be wearing toughskins.

Is there so much retro in baseball that a team founded in 1998 has to wear a fake 1970's throwback?

Is baseball stuck in the past?

Once in a while, but not all the time. It's nice to see teams wear reproductions of old uni's, Cubs' and Phils, from 1948, several years ago, for example. The TB Rays, ugly.

Baseball, like no other sport, has a real connection to the past. The only one that truly rivals it is basketball. As such, the angle is played up frequently.

Frankly, I don't think many would want to see baseball if it wasn't so stuck in the past.

I appreciate the attrmpts at nalstalgia and think that MLB does a nice job at that. However, if they want to attract more young people who have been abandoning the game for decades, there are some athings they could do to make the game seem a little more progressive. Of course when your fan base are traditionalists, that is a hard sell. there is a real fine line here. But I am not condoning animated/neon dolphin sculptures that light up when somebody hits a homerun or anything.

I am also not supporting going back to all of the flashy uniforms of the 70's, but a little more color/creativity would be nice in some of these uniforms.
