  • What if? (Baseball Mogul)

Here is a replay of Adam Greenberg's career starting in '05. After spending most of 2005 as a pinch-hitter behind Derek Lee, he was traded to Tampa Bay and became the starting DH. He had a nice breakout year in '06 batting 5th for the Devil Rays. '07 was his best season, hitting .322 and winning the AL batting title. He started off '08 nicely, but then suffered a ruptured cevical disc that sidelined him for the remainder of the year. He was never the same after that, and ended up retiring in 2011. That's a whole lot better than the 2 plate appearances in real life.

SO, the real point of this thread was to get this going. I want you guys to give me a scenario in baseball history in which never happened, and I'll simulate it like it did happen.

    Some ideas:
What if Babe Ruth never left the Red Sox?
What if Sandy Koufax's career was never derailed by injuries?
What if Ted Williams never missed time to war?
What if Matt Holliday was never traded from Colorado?
Rest in Peace Jose Fernandez (1992-2016)

How about Barry Bonds with the Yankees in 1993?

Is this historically accurate? Was he supposed to sign with the Yanks in '93? And if so, please provide some info.

What if Tom Seaver wasn't traded in 1977?

Bonds left the Pirates as a free agent after the 1992 NLCS. He signed with the Giants and stayed with them until he retired. What if he signed with the Yankees instead? As a left hand hitter with power, he would have seriously thrived at Yankee Stadium.

What if Greg Maddux stayed with the Cubs?

Well, in this universe he would have done just fine. He ended up winning the Cy Young award from 93-95, 97, and 99, which gave him six for his career. You know he had a good run when his worst season was 13-7 with a 3.05 era. Unfortunately he was never on any good teams. The '93 Cubs made the playoffs with a 94-68 record, but never sniffed the post-season after that. The best record (post 93) during his tenure was 84-78. He was usually on some very light-hitting teams.

His career was looking legendary with 268 wins and a career 2.65 era at age 37... But out of the blue he tore his rotator cuff. He was injured for sixteen months, but could not land a contract once he was healthy again. He retired in 2004.

He would have been a second ballot Hall of Famer instead of a first ballot Hall of Famer had he stayed with the Cubs. Can't complain about that.

What if Tom Seaver was never traded in 1977?

He ends up playing all of 1977 with the Mets, going 9-20 with a respectable 3.48 era. However that was an off year as he puts up three <3.00 era seasons in a row afterwards. After 1980, at age 35, he began to decline and put up a string of league average years. In 1984, he signed with the Phillies and went 7-15 with a 4.70. The next season he started one game and retired after breaking his wrist.

The teams Seaver played on happened to be awful. They never placed above 3rd place, and were only above .500 thrice in 9 years. His teams were the reason his record was so poor in certain seasons. However, he still ended up with 284 wins, a matching era of 2.84, and 3,960 strikeouts. Nice career Tom.

What if Mike Schmidt played for the Cubs? I don't think it was ever suppose to happen but I remember Harry Carey really wished it did.

There is a sim I wouldn't mind seeing done. I don't even know if you could do it but we never got our elo draft teams ranked or voted on and I was wondering if you could sim that.

The rosters are in the alltime draft and there is a roster thread for elo drafts. Me, Johnshoemaker, Bigron, Sockeye, 2ndbasecoach, Wade, WindyCity Fan and J.W. were all in it.

Sorry, I just saw this post...

That would sound like a fun project, but something like that would take about a month to assemble.

What if Ray Chapman was never killed during the 1920 season?

Good question, we shall find out. What I did was replay the 1920 season over again, and just go from there. Here's a year by year breakdown of ole Chap.

1920: Ray hits .289 in a half-season riddled by injuries. His 88-68 Indians clinch the pennant and lose in 6 games.
1921: He plays very well in Cleveland, but with the rise of star Joe Sewell, he lost playing time. He was traded to Boston midseason and continued to play very well.
1922: He hits about league average with 27 steals and plus defense for Boston. First full season since sim.
1923: Ray signs with the Yankees for a whopping $9,200 a year but gets traded to the St. Louis Browns after only 52 games. He hits .307 with the Browns.
1924: He starts off with the Browns but gets traded to the White Sox after 52 games (again). He shows decline with the bat by not hitting very well. But at age 33, he is still smooth with the glove.
1925: In a full season in Chicago, Ray hits .272 with 17 SB. However he puts up 0.5 dWar.
1926: In the offseason, he signs with Cleveland again. He puts up a weak .622 OPS. Is he done?
1927: He actually opens up the season pretty well, hitting .333 in 17 games. However he breaks his wrist and is out for the year.
1928: He plays in 13 games and gets released. Game over.

Nice career, Ray. I was really hoping he could get to 2,000 hits... That broken wrist really screwed the pooch. He will probably never sniff the hall of fame, but he had a very productive career. :applaud:
