  • All-Time Athletics Player Seasons Draft Thread

Welcome to the All-Time Athletics Player Seasons Draft! Your goal is to assemble a 25-man roster to play a 154-game season based only on single seasons from their careers!

    The rules are as follows:

    1) When you draft a player, you must declare the year from his career that you're drafting him from. It must be a year in which he played for the current Athletics franchise (1901-2011).

    2) You may draft a player who didn't spend the full season with the Athletics, but only his stats with the Athletics count.

    3) Picks from 2012 are not allowed, as it's potentially confusing.

    4) Position players cannot exceed any of the totals of their overall games played or the number of games played per position. If you take a guy who played in 137 games during the season you draft him from, that's the maximum number of games he can play for your team. If he played 126 games at first base, that's the maximum number of games he can play at first base for your team. A player who played more than 154 games in a season will have his eligible games capped at 154.

    5) You must have a starter for at least 154 games at each lineup position on your roster by the end of the draft, including the DH. Excess games played at a position can be used as DH games. See this post for details about how to make your positional games balance properly.

    6) You must have at least nine pitchers on your roster, totaling at least 1377 innings pitched and 154 games started. Pitchers are limited by the number of games pitched, games started and innings pitched. For instance, if you have a pitcher who pitched in 49 games, starting 35 of them, he could be used as a starter up to 35 times (with 14 possible relief appearances), or as a reliever up to 49 times (with no starts).

    7) Two people cannot have the same player. Once a player is drafted, all his other seasons are off the board.

    8) No drafter may select from the same year twice.

    9) Draft will go snake style, with a 12-hour time limit. 2 AM-8-AM Central will be dead time during which the draft clock is frozen.

    10) If you do not pick after 12 hours, the next person in line will be allowed to make his pick. You will then be allowed to make up your pick at any time. If your turn comes up again and you still haven't made up your pick, you will be automatically skipped until you do. If you make an invalid pick, it will be treated as a missed pick and the same rules will apply.

    11) You may not change your pick more than ten minutes after it's been made, or once the next drafter has made his pick. This rule does not apply if the original pick is invalid.

If you have any questions or need help, feel free to ask me.

The draft officially begins on Tuesday, August 28 at 8 AM Central Time.

The rules seem very straightforeward. It should be a lot of fun. I hope we get a few more participating.

I'll hop on board. The Athletics are one of the non home-town teams I'm most interested in.

Are we planning on running a 154 game simulation? If so, should be designate which games the backups play in? For Diamond Mind league I put in % games played for reserves against left handed pitching and right handed pitching.

        Welcome aboard, J W!

As I mentioned on another thread, you don't actually have to declare the number of games each player plays at each position, you only need to make sure they balance out.

I was assuming we'd just vote on the teams like usual, but if someone has a simulator, I'm open to that. Even though he's not participating in this draft, Tyrus said he has a simulator that might work. I guess we'll see when the time comes.

I think six is a good minimum number of drafters. Is everyone else cool with it?

I'd love to see that if Tyrus is up for it. By turning off injuries we could whip through 154 games using eight teams, 22 games each against each opponent. We would just input our managerial profile and wait for the results. All games could be played on a neutral field. We'd just need two more people to sign up.

Well, realistically we'd be trying to consider how many games a player actually played. If you draft a guy who missed some time due to injury, he shouldn't get credit for games he didn't actually play. If we don't have a simulator that takes into account actual production, then maybe subjective voting is the way to go.

BTW, are we allowing all A's players? Only from 1900 on?

I'm hoping we allow all of them because I've got my eye on some that played before 1900, but whatever ian decides is fine with me.

I was thinking only the current A's franchise from 1901-present. I actually forgot there were some 19th-Century franchises that called themselves the Philadelphia Athletics.

Also, do we allow 2012? If so, we should just pick a cutoff date or something for what point we'll use for stats

I was thinking that 2012 would be allowable, because we're pretty far along in the season. Do you want to say that the stats available for the player would be the ones he has at the moment he's drafted?

Either that or we could assume that the season will be close to finished by the time we complete the draft. Then we could perhaps wait it out until a guy's final stats are in. Of course, if we do it that way, you'd have to make sure your guy already has enough to meet your requirements when you pick him.

I think the franchise that is the Phila/KC/OaklandAthletics came into existence in 1901. Why would previous, non-related franchises be allowed?

I think we should pick a cutoff date for 2012, and it should be one that's already occurred. It would be kind of awkward if we pick a player, then suddenly he goes into a giant slump/streak for the rest of the season. This draft is about what players have done, not predicting the future.

We probably wouldn't. But if you didn't realize those were separate franchises (which I didn't at first), it would be an easy thing to screw up

That was my reasoning. Are you interested in joining this draft, BigRon?

That's reasonable. So are you saying we should do it that a 2012 player's stats are whatever they are at the time he's drafted?
