Welcome to the World Series Losers Draft. The rules are listed below as well as the draft order. I'll keep all teams/players available up to date as we go along.
1) Rosters must meet the following requirements (25 players per team):
10 pitchers minimum (at least 4 should be regular season starters)
8 players to start at each non-pitcher position
1 designated hitter
3 backup position players (can be infield or outfield)
1 backup catcher
2 spots which you can allocate at your own discretion (can be position player, designated hitter or pitcher)
2) The pool will consist of all players to play on the losing side in the World Series, and you must declare which team you're drafting a player from. Players who played for a championship team in the regular season or in the earlier rounds of the playoffs but not the World Series are ineligible.
3) Players drafted may play any position he played at least 16 games (10% of the season) during the regular season in his chosen year. For example, Eric Hinske in 2008 can play RF (49 games) & LF (40 games) but not 1B (11 games). But if you draft Jim Thome from the 1995 Indians he can only play third base. If you draft Thome from the 1997 Indians he can only play first base.
(Tip: If you're not sure which positions a player played in a certain World Series, go to Baseball-Reference, find the page of the player you want and scroll down to the "Postseason Batting" section. There's a link right next to the red heading that says "Postseason Gamelog," where it'll show you a list of every postseason game the player played in, and which positions he occupied in the box score.)
4)*** Any pitcher who threw a pitch during the World Series may be drafted. Depending on his usage during the regular season will dictate whether he can be used as a starter, reliever or both. Even if a pitcher only started one game during the regular season, he can be slotted as one of your four minimum starters. Just remember that it could also cause him to be discounted once the voting process starts.
5)*** Removed - irrelevant to this exercise.
6) There is a designated hitter for our teams. Any actual DH or positional player may fill this role.
7) Once you have drafted from a particular World Series winner you may not draft from that team again, though you may draft from the same franchise in a different championship year.
8) Each championship team may only be selected from three times in the entire draft.
9) The draft will go snake-style. If you wish to change your pick, you must do so before the next person in line has picked or before your selection is listed in the "Full Draft" section below. Any attempts to change a pick after that (either the player or the team from which he is drafted) will not be allowed.
10) You will have 12 hours to make a selection once your turn comes up. The hours of 2 AM - 8 AM Central Time will be considered "dead time," during which the draft clock will be frozen (though you may make a pick during this time if you wish). If you do not make your pick after the 12 hours, the next person in line will get to draft, and you will be able to make up your missed pick(s) at any time. If your turn comes up a second time and you still have not made up your missed picks, you will be automatically skipped until you do.
11) If you make an invalid pick (i.e. pick a player who's already been taken, or pick from a team you aren't allowed to select from), said pick will be treated as a missed pick, and the next person in line will be allowed to select. As with missed picks, you will be able to make it up at any time, and if you still haven't made it up when your turn comes up again, you'll be automatically skipped until you do.
12) Once the draft is complete we'll determine a winner through a voting playoff. This is a single season draft, so how well a player performed in the given World Series is irrelevant to evaluating rosters. Players will be evaluated by what they did during that year's regular season. If a drafted player was traded to his WS team during that year's regular season, his statistics for any and all prior teams he played for will count.
13) Draft picks and/or players may be traded during the draft. There will be no approval process for this unless multiple teams have a complaint in the event any trade looks brutally lopsided.
Be very careful while trading. You must field 25 players so a 3-1 or 2-1 deal needs to be offset at sometime to gain those picks back.
