  • The All-Time All-Star Snub League

In response to the "Anyone Interested?" thread, I've got a new idea for an all-time draft project: A draft consisting entirely of players who undeservedly never made an all star team. Here are the proposed rules:

    - Players must have played Major League Baseball in at least one season from 1933-2013 (or the present season for future reference).
    - Players must be retired or have completed their major league career.
    - Once a player is drafted, the manager may select any one season from the player's career from 1933-2013.
    - Players qualify for positions that they played in the year they were selected. Minimum 10 games played (or before the "/" on baseball reference).
    - Minimum 600 PA must be accrued by a player rated at each field position.
    - Minimum 10 pitchers must be carried.
    - The DH position is allowed.

So, let's take a look at some examples.

    1) Kirk Gibson qualifies for this draft, believe it or not. He played from 1979-1995 and never made an All-Star team. The manager may however choose his 1988 MVP season, in which he qualifies for LF but not CF (1 game played).

    2) Rogers Hornsby never made an All-Star team. However, only the seasons 1933-1937 may count from his career, in which case he would be a reserve 2B at best.

What do you all think? There are some surprising players who never made it, with some very good single seasons to their resume.

Now just chasing rabbits, trying to limit my list to guys who had at least one season of 3.0+ WAR. Started with the 1995 Reds, going backwards, clicking on names that I recognize but don't recall going to the big game, and looking up other non-Reds players as they come to me.

        Batters
        Bernie Carbo (1969-1980)
        Dave Collins (1975-1990)
Bill Doran (1982-1993) ...actually surprised he never made it even as a reserve
        Nick Esasky (1983-1990)
        Ken Henderson (1965-1980)
        Deron Johnson (1960-1962,1964-1976)
        Eddie Milner (1980-1988)
        Hal Morris (1988-2000)
        Jose Oquendo (1983-1984,1986-1995)
        Wally Post (1949, 1951-1964)
        Merv Rettenmund (1968-1980)
        Bobby Tolan (1965-1970,1972-1977,1979)
        Mookie Wilson (1980-1991)

        Pitchers
        Scott Bankhead (1986-1995)
        Tim Belcher (1987-2000)
        Dave Burba (1990-2004)
        Roger Craig (1955-1966)
        Bill Gullickson (1979-1987,1990-1994)
        Clay Kirby (1968-1976)
        Andy McGaffigan (1981-1991)

        Mark Portugal (1985-1999)
        Joe Price (1980-1990)
        Dennis Rasmussen (1983-1993,1995)

Just so I understand, does this mean that, when drafting a player, we can only draft him from a season in which he accumulated 600+ PA? Or do you mean that our roster must include a total of 600+ PA amongst all players rated at each respective position?

Scott Hatteberg and Rusty Greer never made an All-Star team, and they had some decent seasons to choose from. I could look for some more if you'd like?

EDIT: Looking for a couple pitchers too. Gene Garber, Danny Cox, and Jim Deshaies never made an All-Star team. This is actually pretty fun! Many of these guys were players I liked as a kid, and I didn't know they never made it to an All-Star Game. Same thing when I find a guy who actually did make a team, and I had no clue!

I got my All-Star Team. Players that have played full time in the ASG era, with a good season or several good seasons and no ASG selection. I'll take modern player best. Avoiding Hal Trosky for instance:

              C: Rick Wilkins, 1993
              1B: Aubrey Huff, 2003
              2B: Bill Doran, 1985
              3B: Richie Hebner, 1972
              SS: John Valentin, 1995
              LF: Kirk Gibson, 1988
              CF: Dwayne Murphy, 1980
              RF: Tim Salmon, 1995
              DH: Travis Hafner, 2006
              SP: Tom Candiotti, 1991
              CL: Mark Eichorn, 1986
