  • Free Agent Signings

Hey Guys: What is the story re. releasing a player and signing a free agent...and can one drop and add more than one FA at a time/ I am sure it is in the rules but I am sneakling this in at work!

    Joe / Hornets

Joe - You can drop a player from your roster at any time during the season and sign any other player off of the free agent list for the base salary of 250K. However, you are still responsible for the dropped player's salary for the remainder of the season. Also, if he happens to be a player with a free agent contract, you would have to buy out the remainder of the contract at half price. Sounds a bit confusing, so let me give a couple of examples:

    1. I have Joe Schmoe, who I signed as a rookie three years ago and whose present salary is 750K. I decide to drop him. I can do so, and sign any free agent player to a 250K contract. However, I also have to keep Joe Schmoe's 750K salary on my ledger for the remainder of the current season. (Remember, there is a 100M salary cap; if you go over you take a 5M hit on your salary cap for the next season).

    2. Same situation as above, but instead of having been a rookie pick, I got Joe in the free agent auction. He is on a three year contract at 4M per year. This is the second year of his contract. If I decide to let him go, I have to carry his 4M salary on my ledger for the rest of the season, and I also have to add an additional 2M to buy out his contract (50% of the remaining one year at 4M).

Actually, I don't believe we've ever had anyone buy out a free agent contract in the middle of the season - it has always happened prior to the upcoming season when the team drops are announced and counts against the upcoming season's salary limit. But I suppose if you wanted to do it during the season, it would have to count against the current season's salary cap.

Hope that explains it. If not, let me know and I'll try again.

--The rules allow for signing one free agent after each sims. That is designed to prevent somebody with extra cap space from loading up right after the season gets underway though. At this point of the season we have all had ample opportunity to go through the scrap heap though. If there are a couple players you want go ahead and sign them. Please ask any additional questions in the season thread or e-mail/PM me.

--Buying out a contract after the non-tender deadline would result in any years after this one being charged against next year's cap. There is no upside to doing it now.

OK, wasn't sure how you would handle it, because I don't think we have run into this before. Either way would be OK with me.

Pending approval of commissioner the Hornets attempt to fill a few usage and pitching balance issues as follows:

Release: Joe Lahoud / Joe Hague

Sign: Bill Landis / RP and Russ Snyder / OF

--You can exceed 40 players during the season if you want to retain control of Lahoud or Hague. Either way please go ahead and make the changes and send me a new MP. If you want it in effect for the next sim I'll need it by midnight EST. I'll be getting the games in shortly after.

MP delivered...neh Hague and Lahoud are just taking up space in the clubhouse.
