  • 1981 Rookie of the Year

--Vote here for your ROY. Please vote for your top 3, with votes counted 5, 3, 1. There is no easy way to sort CKL rookies so if you have someone you'd like considered please nominate them here. Voting is open til midnight EST on Monday, September 24.

--The Jaxx Tim Raines looks like the obvious choice, but the Corsairs have a pretty good candidate in catcher Rich Gedman. Gedman made the All Star team and end the season (he's at 163% of usage) batting 280 with 13 HR and 61 RBI.

--Only 3 series to go. It would be nice to see some nominations here.

The Lumberjaxx nominate outfielder Tim Raines. Incredible stats for the first year player, helping the Jaxx to the best season in team history: .289/374/444. Fourteen doubles, nineteen triples, ten homers, 103 runs, 120 stolen bases (with 25 CS).

The Legends nominate two players (first time in a few years I've had two rookies perform so well at the same time):
Fernando Valenzuela, SP: 17-9, 3.14 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 260.2 IP, 223 strikeouts (he has one start left still).
Juan Bonilla, 2B: Covered a critical position in fine fashion as a rookie. 278/328/341, but had a .409 OBP against lefties.
You see, you spend a good deal of your life gripping a baseball and in the end it turns out that it was the other way around all the time. J. Bouton

With only four total nominations, this is my ballot.
          1. Tim Raines, Lumberjaxx – Tremendous rookie year at the top of the Jaxx order. His .374 OBP was 11th in the league, while his 120 stolen bases established a new CKL record. Displayed decent power as well with double digit totals in doubles (14), triples (19) and homers (10), driving in 61 from the top of the order while scoring 103 times. Stats would have been even more impressive if not for a late season injury that ended his season early.
          2. Fernando Valenzuela, Legends – Rookie lefty was a prime reason the Legends made it to the playoffs. Led the CKL in strikeouts with 223 while posting a 17-10 mark. Fourth in innings with 262.
          3. Juan Bonilla, Legends - Not a big year at the plate, although a .329 OBP from a rookie middle infielder who fielded very well is respectable. However, he started 146 games for the Legends, who had no other second baseman on the roster and did a great job under the pressure of a pennant race. Without him and Valenzuela, the Legends are home watching the playoffs on TV.

Gedman may have taken the third slot with more playing time, but Bonilla started fifty more games and was arguably more important to his teams’ success as well.

I'll toss a new name into the ring for ROY. Harold Baines had 476 PA's this season. He hit 280/320/489 with 15 HR's and 75 RBI's. His RC was 65.8 which is higher than all of the hitters already receiving votes except for Raines. Here's my vote:

              1 - Raines
              2 - Valenzuala
              3 - Baines
              Dan
              CKL - Maloy Boys
              P2PKL - Detroit Tigers

The Gold Sox' top rookie was Leon Durham, who posted a .791 OPS with 15 HRs while playing a position on the field. His RC was higher than Baines' as well.

                  1. Raines
                  2. Valenzuela
                  3. Durham
