1982 Season Thread

  • Disional Series: Llamas at Legends; games 1-2

    Game 1: Larry Christenson (12-11, 3.52) vs Eric Show (9-9, 3.51)
    --The home squad got off to an early lead in the 2nd. Herndon and Puhl singled and a passed ball frought Herndon home. The made in 2-0 in the 4th on singles by Hayes and Puhl and a Griffey ground out.
    --Hayes singled and stole 2nd, then came around on Griffey's single to make it 3-0 in the 6th. Bonilaa doubled and Thompson singled him home in the 7th to make it 4-0.
    --That was all the scoring as Show tossed a 4 hit shutout for the Legends.

    Game 2: Jerry Ruess (17-9, 3.64) vs Fergie Jenkins (8-13, 4.28)
    --The Llamas jumped to a quick lead with HR by Oliver and Schmidt in the top of the 1st. The Legends answered in the bottom of the inning. Bonnell, Herndon and Essian singled to load the bases. Kingman went deep to clear them and make it 4-2 for the home team.
    --Lew added to their lead in the 3rd. Kingman singled, moved up on a ground out and scored on Molitors single to make it 5-2. That was plenty enough for the Legends grand old man as Fergie cruised the rest fo the way for a complete game victory.
    --Series heads west with the Llamas backs to the wall. Rich, Stanley was injured in game 2. He will miss the rest of this series and the next, if you get there. You may replace him on your roster. This series will resume on Saturday with games 3 and 4 if needed.

    • Was kind of leery starting Show and Fergie, but they had been (along with Clancy) my best starters since July, while Valenzuela and Morris were getting knocked around. Looks like the gamble paid off so far. Now if I can get a good game out of either Valenzuela or Morris....

        • Divisional Playoff: Dust Bunnies at Knights; games 3-4

          Game 3: Jim Barr (9-4, 2.22) vs Al Holland (12-7, 2.94)
          --The Dust Bunnies went up 1-0 in the 4th on a solo shot by Gene Tenace and made it 2-0 in the 6th on a long ball by Dusty Baker. The Knights cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 6th on Hostetler's triple and Linares single.
          --It was still 2-1 going to the bottom of the 9th and Moffitt came on to close things out. He didn't get off to a very good start as Wright led things off with a pinch single and Washington doubled to put the winning run on 2nd. Sax popped out for 1 down. Johnson bounced out to first to tie it. Then Carter bashed one over the LF wall to win it for the Knights.

          Game 4: Andy Hawkins (4-0, 1.44) vs Dennis Lamp (10-10, 3.83)
          --The Bunnies again jumped off to a lead, this time in the 1st. Morgan singled, Harrah walked and Baker singled to make it 1-0. Smalley single made it 2-0. The Knights cut the lead in half in the 2nd on Thomas single, Linares double and Sax infield single.
          --Phoenix added on in the top of the 3rd on a single by Harrah, who moved up on a gound out and came around on Smalley's single. The Knights cut it back down to a single run in the bottom of the inning when Johnson tripled and came home on Carter's round out.
          --The DB's scored again in the top of the 4th when Downing doubled and came around on a sac bunt and sac fly. Again the Knights answered in the bottom of the inning. Lefebvre and Linares singled. Washington's single made it 4-3. Washington stole 2nd and Sax single brought home a pair and put the Knights ahead and sent Hawkins to the showers. Leecemark made it 6-4 in the 5th on singles by Lefebvre and Linares and a Washington sac fly.
          --The Bunnies rallied again in the 6th. Smalley singled and Dwoning doubled. Richards singled to tie it. Knight doubled and Smith singled to make it 8-6, with Smith advancing to 3rd on Thomas' errant throw to the plate. Morgan's ground out made it 9-6. Tenace homered in the 7th to make it 10-6.
          --The Knights came raring back in the 8th. Johnson, Carter and DeCinces singled. Thomas singled to make it 10-7. Saucier came on to pitch and Brown greeted him with a pinch single to make it 10-9. Moffit came on to pitch and Washington greeted him with a single to tie things up at 10.
          --Smalley homered in the top of the 9th to make it 11-10. Johnson led off the bottom of the 9th with a double, but Moffitt bore down to fan Carter and DeCinces. A walk to Thomas put the winning run on base, but Brown grounded out to bring an end to one of the most exciting postseason games in CKL history.

          --The series heads south for the finale of what has been a great season long battle between the Johnson Division rivals. Game 5 will be Sunday.

            • --Sorry for the delay. Its been an exhausting weekend. I promise to get games in toimorrow, probably both 3-4 of the Legends-Llamas and 5 of the Knights-Bunnies.

              • Divisional Series: Legends at Llamas; game 3 (and 4?)

                Game 3: Jim Clancy (11-12, 3.98) vs Ed Lynch (6-9, 3.74)
                --The Legends jumped to an early lead in the second on a Griffey single and Ashby HR. They added on in the 3rd. Molitor led off with a double. Thomspon singled and Oberkfell SF made it 3-0. Herndon and Hayes delivered singled to make it 4-0. Puhl capped off the rally with naother single to make it an imposing 5-0 lead.
                --The Llamas started to battle back in the bottom of the third. Singleton doubled and Faedo singled him home to get them on the board. They really got going in the 6th. Faedo and Landeaux singled and Schmidt went deep to LF to cut the led to one.
                --Unfortunately for Llamas fans that was their last rally of the season. Reardon came on to toss 2 innings of shutout ball to close out the game and series. The Lgends get the sweep, without even using CYA winner Fernando Valenzula, and advance to the LCS vs the Iron. That series will commence on Wednesday. Congrats on a fine season Rich. Lew please pick your series MVP (league file out tonight).

                  • Divisional Playoff: Knights at Dust Bunnies; game 5

                    Game 5: Steve Rogers (22-10, 3.25) vs Bruce Kison (6-9, 3.74)
                    --The Bunnies got to Rogers early. He walked Morgan and Harrah to start a 1st inning rally. Baker's IF single loaded the bases. Smalley SF brought the first run home and Downing single made it 2-0.
                    --The Knights came right back in the 2nd. Thomas singled and Wright reached on Linares error. Linares single made it 2-1 and Washington's SF tied it. Leecemark took the lead in the 5th. Wasingon and Hernandez singled and Ksion's WP brought the run home. They made it 4-2 in the 7th on Washington's triple and Sax ground out.
                    --The home team got going in the bottom of the 7th. Smith walked and Morgan doubled. Harrah single cut the lead to one. Baker singled tied it, Harrah was out trying for 3rd. Smalley singled and DeCinces booted Tenace ground ball to put the Bunnies ahead 5-4.
                    --Moffit came on to close thing out in the 9th, but hs rough series continued. Lefebvre greeted him with a pinch walk. Washington reached on a fielder choice and stole 2nd. Sax If single moved him to 3rd and Hernandez sac fly tied it.
                    --The Bunnies finally ended what was a great series - and season long battle - in the 10th. Richards singled and came home on Morgan's double to send the Bunnies to the LCS. Congrats Jack and please pick your MVP.

                      • I think I'll go with Juan Bonilla as the Legends MVP.

                        Congrats on a fine season Rich. Now I'm hoping the Legends can keep things rolling against the Iron.

                        Mark, I'll just go with the MP you have. Valenzuela should start the first game against the Iron, then Show and Jenkins. Depending on where we are at that point I may make a change when Clancy's turn comes.

                            • LCS: Legends at Iron; Games 1-2

                              Game 1: Valenzuala (19-11, 2.95) vs Anjujar (19-12, 3.15)
                              --The Legends jumped on Andujar early. In the top of the first Bonilla walked and Thompson went yard to make it 2-0. The Iron retaliated in the 2nd. Hrbek and Diaz singled. Valenzula's WP moved them into scoring position and Conception's doubled tied it.
                              --Milwakee moved ahead in the 6th. Bochte and Guerro walked and Hrbek doubled them home. Boggs single made it 5-2 and sent Valenzula to the showers. They added an insurance run in the 8th to ice it.
                              Game 2: Show (9-9, 3.51) vs Stoddard (4-3, 3.60)
                              --The Iron got off to the early lead in the 1st. Boggs walked and Bochte singled. Dwyer's ground out made it 1-0. Diaz single doubled the lead. Lew evened things up in the 2nd. Puhl's homer got them on the board. Griffey walked and Ashby singled him to 3rd. Bonilla bunted him home.
                              --The Iron kept the pressure on in the 3rd. Aikens' singled and Wilson walked. Conception's double drove them both in. Boggs single sent him home to make it 5-2. The Legends fought back in the 4th. Griffey singled and Ashby went deep to cut the lead to 1.
                              --The bats took a rest til the 7th. Conception walked and Ray singled. Bochte's double made it 7-4 Aikens rounded out the scoring with an 8th inning solo blast.
                              --The series heads to New York with the Legends down 0-2. Neither team had any injuries in the series.

                              • LCS: Dust Bunnies at Hard Cider; games 1-2

                                Game 1: Hough (15-9, 3.39) vs Soto (11-14, 3.47)
                                --The Hard Cider got on the board first on Upshaw's solo blast in the 2nd. They added a couple more in the 3rd. Mumphrey singled and Murphy walked. Upshaw doubled them both home.
                                --They tacked on another in the 4th on Law's single and Mumphrey's double. They made it 5-0 in the 6th. Law singled and stole second, then scored on Mumphrey's double.
                                --That was more than enough for Soto, as he tossed a 4 hit shutout.

                                Game 2: Barr (9-4, 2.22) vs Bannister (18-8, 3.57)
                                --The Dust Bunnies barrelled out the gate in this one. Smith and Morgan singled to open the ballgame. Harrah walked to load the bases with nobody out. Baker grounded into a force at home, but beat the relay to keep the bases juiced. Samlley's single scored two. Tenace walked. Downing sac fly made it 3-0 and Ruchards single put the visitors up by 4 before the Hard Cider got their first at bats.
                                --Mac's started to chip away in the second when Wockenfuss single and Law's triple made it 4-1. The Bunnies got that run back in the 4th when Smith doubled and Morgan tripled to make it 5-1 and send Bannister to the showers. They added on in the 5th on singled by Baker and Smalley with a tencadeground out making it 6-1.
                                --The Hard Cider really got going in the bottom of the 5th. Law reached on Morgan's error. Murphy singled and Herr got a run home with a ground out. Evans and Murphy singled to make it 6-3. Wockenfuss singled home another. Cey doubled to cut the lead to one and end Barr's day. Pena greeted Hume with a two run single to make it 7-6 Hard Cider.
                                --Mac's bullpen made that hold up. Mahler tossed 4 1/3 strong innings and Garber closed it out to send the series to Pheonix with the Hard Cider already halfway back to the promised land.
