Being a newcomer, I've never participated in the free agent auction. I also haven't done my homework and read up on the rules/protocol, so I have little idea of what will happen. I'll try to read some of the dialogue pertaining to this to see if I can figure anything out.

But, I don't even understand some of the basic mechanics. THere are, I guess, well over 100 free agents out there. Do we start bidding on any/all of them simultaneously, or what?

Rich, can you please edit the calendar for the complete off season activity schedule? Your message notes that the free agent auction will begin on Tuesday (7/31) at 9 am which is "a couple of days later than originally planned". The way I read the schedule posted in the 1901-02 offseason thread, we were scheduled to begin the free agent auction on Friday 8/3 at 9 pm. Maybe I'm the only one but I'm confused since this looks to be earlier rather than later and I'm not certain if the 9 am vs 9 pm is a typo or schedule change and how it might impact the full calendar.

Sorry, I'm really not trying to be anal, but perhaps it would be less confusing (at least for me) if you updated the full calendar for all of these changes. Thanks.

Ron, here is an updated version of a post I made to Wade's similar question in another thread. Please note that the dates and times are based on the original schedule but the process is still the same regardless the dates and times:

Basically, you can place an opening bid on any player (in 250k increments) from 9 pm Friday until 8 pm Monday. So if you bid 250k on a player, I can bid 500k (or 750k, or 1M. etc) on the same player. If you get outbid, you can put another bid in on the player until 8 pm Monday. After 8 pm Monday, high bids on all players are listed. The 250k phase goes from Monday at 9 pm until Tuesday at 8 pm. All bids are raised in minimum 250k increments. Any player not receiving a new bid in this phase is signed by the high bidder from previous period. Any player receiving a higher bid during this period (whether it is one higher bid or 100 higher bids) automatically moves into the 500k phase which goes from 9 pm Tuesday until 8 pm Wednesday. In this phase, all higher bids have to be at least 500k higher than the previous bid. Again, if the player receives no new bids during this phase, he is signed by the previous phase high bidder. If the player does receive at least one higher bid, they move into the 1M phase. Any player getting a higher bid in the 1M phase, then moves into the live phase of the auction on Friday night.

The Classic Keeper League just finished their 1981 free agent auction. You can check it out here http://www.baseball-fever.com/showth...-Agent-Auction to see how it works in practice.

Just want to be 100% certain of this, because it's different from the CKL: any player can be signed for up to five years, even at minimum salary?

Roscoe (Roxy) Miller should be on the free agency list.

                We've started now, right?

Not like it makes a big difference at this point. I just didn't want someone offline now to wonder what happened when they show up later.

I have some questions regarding next week's free agency period. In the CKL, bidding for a phase ends at 8 pm with bidding for the next phase beginning at 9 pm. In the hour between, winning bids and players moving to the next phase are posted. In our schedule it simply reads that signings will be announced at 11 pm.

Is 11 pm the deadline for submitting a bid or is it some time earlier and this is when the winning bids are announced?

Regarding the cutoff time for submitting a bid, what is the final time a successful bid will be accepted? For example, if the deadline is 11 pm, is the last successful bid at 10:59 and 11:00 is too late or is 11:00 the last acceptable time to make a bid and 11:01 is too late? This question arose in the last CKL free agent period and I thought it would be best addressed up front.

If there is no gap between the cutoff and announcement time, I assume the end of one phase and the beginning of the next phase will be seamless. If that is the case, it will be important that owners keep good track of players signed and players advancing to the next phase. This will help avoid bids in subsequent rounds for players "signed" in the previous round.

Do you want owners to post a roster recap (# of players and salary committed) on this thread or just update their roster's in the roster thread prior to the start of the free agency period?
