How about a contest where we try to guess which of these players will fall off the ballot after this year? How many of these guys will receive less than 5% of the vote?

One point for each correct guess. Minus one point for each incorrect guess.

I'll have to come up with something good to award the winner.

My own guess is that 2006 will be the last BBWAA ballot for...

          ...Rick Aguilera
          ...Will Clark
          ...Gary DiSarcina
          ...Alex Fernandez
          ...Gary Gaetti
          ...Dwight Gooden
          ...Ozzie Guillen
          ...Orel Hershiser
          ...Gregg Jefferies
          ...Doug Jones
          ...Willie McGee
          ...Hal Morris
          ...Walt Weiss
          ...John Wetteland

Essentially, I think that all of the "freshmen" except Belle will be "one-and-done" this year and that last year's inexplicable holdover (McGee) won't be seeing another ballot either.

I'm surprised to see so many people think Will Clark will stick around. I wouldn't be surprised if he did, and he certainly deserve to, but the fact that Keith Hernandez was dropped from the ballot, does not bode well for Will Clark.

I also think Joe Carter being dropped from the ballot doesn't bode well for Clark. I know they played different positions, but in terms of notoreity and impact, I think they were perceived about equally (though Clark was the better player).

The better comparison is Don Mattingly. Clark is superior to Mattingly is practically every facet of the game, except popularity. Of course, if Clark had worn pinstripes and Donnie Ballgame had played in Candlestick, that perception would be reversed.

Unlike most, I think Gooden's amazing start to his career and Wetteland's solid closer numbers plus four saves in the '96 WS will get them each a little over 5% in sentimental votes. Clark and Hershiser still have sizable loyal followings, and I'm sure some BBWAA voters are among them.

Here are the final point standings...

                            Out of 13 possible...

                            12 - Chancellor, yest
                            11 - abacab, KCGHOST
                            10 - Captain Cold Nose, Gaedel4HOF
                            9 - Bigtone23, Patsfan
                            8 - Aqua, Transplanted Fan

                            - Proud to say I was the only one to get every dropped name on the ballot, however I lost a point for incorrectly guessing that Orel Hershiser would be dropped. Bigtone23 also lost a point for guessing same.

                            - yest correctly guessed every dropped player except for Will Clark, whom nobody but me apparently thought the writers would screw.

As there was a tie for first between yest and myself, I am happy to award the "championship" to yest as he went 12-for-12 (100%) on his guesses and I just 13-for-14 (93%) on mine.

To collect your prize, yest, please PM me with appropriate mailing instructions.
