  • Do you think closers belong in the HOF?

Maybe this has been discussed before, but I can't remember and I can't find anything about it. But I was wondering how you all think about closers to be inducted into the HOF.

IMO they should be inducted to the HOF because they are a substantial part of the game nowadays.

I think its okay to include them, but be selective, very selective.

      Well,

if they are deserving sure. I think you'd be crazy to say Rivera dosen't belong in the HOF. Relievers to, like Goose Goosage he's deserving.

Yes, though I'm a bit tougher on them.

I find it odd that the HoF should exclude certain players based on what they do on the field. That makes no sense.

The idea of a closer getting in the HoF is not repugnant to me. What upsets me is someone getting in who doesn't pitch any real amount of innings. I'd like to see a reliefer at least hurl 1500 quality innings.

Mo's not going to get anywhere near that many innings. Can you honestly tell me you don't think he's Hall worthy?

You're gonna have about four relievers at most in the Hall?

Based on current HOF Monitor stats, Rivera is the only closer who should be considered a shoo-in for the HOF (152). Lee Smith is a too-close-to-call (136), Gossage (126) and Trevor Hoffman (119) are probably in the close-but-no-cigar camp.

Which seems about right to me - Rivera and Smith in, Gossage borderline.

If a likely HOFer is 100, what's wrong with 126? Monitor seems to underrate Wilhelm, what about Franco and Fingers?

Not Franco...average reliever put in non-average situations...John Franco is not a hallf of famer.

Wilhelm is though...and few seem to recognize just how good he was.

I was referring to going by Hall of Fame Monitor. Hoffman doesn't have that many IP under his belt and he might not look that great if he goes into a major downturn.

Yes, Wilhelm was a fantastic reliever. That you have him ranked behind Billy Wagner I find somewhat baffling.
