    Slipped through the Cracks?

    I'm curious who you guys think ought to be elected to the Hall of Fame, but who (for whatever reason) have been dropped from the BBWAA ballot and are awaiting their Veterans Committee eligibility. Guys with less than 5% in a BBWAA election who have to be retired 21 years before they can make a VC ballot (2007, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015, etc.).

    Here's the ones I feel are Hall-worthy:
    Will Clark
    Darrell Evans
    Dwight Evans
    Bobby Grich
    Keith Hernandez
    Ted Simmons
    Lou Whitaker

    Under consideration:
    Tom Henke
    Dan Quisenberry

      Not that it matters now, but Ron Santo had at one time been dropped from the writers' consideration for a few seasons. He got back due to the ever-changing rules structure.
      Now it's up to his peers.

        I won't go for Hernandez, Dwight Evans or Henke, but the others strike me as good choices.

          I think if you ran a poll on each of this guys you would find that while they would get much more respect than they got from the BBWAA none of them would garner 75% support.

            Graig Nettles
            Lance Parrish

                --I'd go with Nettles over Darrell Evans. Of course, neither is the most deserving 3B outside the Hall so long as Santo keeps getting snubbed. I'd take Hernandez over Clark by a sizeable margin too. Ted Simmons for sure. I'd take Freehan over Parrish if I got to pick a Tigers catcher. Pass on Dwight Evans (he wouldn't be a bad choice, but there is such a glut of RF - both in and out - that his case isn't that compelling). Grich and Whitaker would both be better than several Hall of Fame 2Bs. Only Joe Gordon (and perhaps Doyle) amoung 2Bs is arguably as good, unlike the RFers competing with Dewey.

                  I'd back every player mentioned so far*, and I think after a few generations pass they'll all eventually get in because they're plainly deserving.

                  So why wait?

                  *I'm a little leery of the relievers, but with the new "Sutter precedent", Quiz surely belongs and Henke's got a decent case.

                    Today's Way Back Wednesday selection (I know it's Thursday...oh well).

                    I think of the guys mentioned above, Will Clark, Dwight Evans, Bobby Grich, Keith Hernandez, Ted Simmons, Lou Whitaker (though I'm not completely sold on him), Dan Quisenberry, Al Oliver and maybe Rusty Staub certainly fell through the cracks.

                      There are many players who deserve to be in the HOF, but aren't. Some of these players have had histories of some kind of mentionable support, so I wouldn't quite say they "slipped through the cracks," they just haven't recieved enough support. Players like Santo, Dick Allen, Minoso, and Ken Boyer have histories of some decent support. But there are players who really slipped through the crack, making hardly a dent in the voting totals : Harry Stovey, Sherry Magee, Pete Browning, Albert Belle, Bill Dahlen, Stan Hack, Ted Simmons, just to name a few...

                        Of all the names mentioned so far, only Santo would get my support. What grudge/weakness in his game would explain his exclusion? I've heard of no sane and reasonable against his inclusion, other than he didn't make it in originally and all that hooey. Voters have allowed quite a few marginal choices in recent years, and yet no one gets behind Santo even after his demise. Its just plain odd, IMO.

                        Does anyone have insight on eligibility of veteran players for Veterans Committee selections? I am unclear on this matter, anyway.
