  • Xander Bogaerts

As far as I can tell, no thread has been dedicated yet to Xander Bogaerts, starting off the 2022 in fine fashion, on pace to match his 2019 season of ~6 wins.

For his age 22 to 29 seasons, Bogaerts has been the second most valuable shortstop in the game, behind Francisco Lindor, though behind Carlos Correa and Trea Turner on a rate basis.

Deserves a bump for an all-star type performance during the shortened 2020 season.

With good aging, can Bogaerts craft a HOF career?

His one big ding is that he's been a poor defender for his entire career; he's already at -61 Rtot over 8 full seasons' worth of games. (Jeter was at -103 Rtot by that point for comparison.) If not for us having fellow stud Rafael Devers (somehow an even bigger butcher than Bogey) at the hot corner, he'd 100% have transitioned to third full-time long ago.

But other than that, with some more consistently high-value, MVP/SS-caliber seasons, he'll be well on the path.
They don’t think it be like it is, but it do.

He hasn't shown the peak of a typical HOFer to this point, with only one 6 win season.

However, if he keeps his current pace, he'll have another 5 win year, besides a moderately down 2017, he's been clocking off 4-6 win seasons every year (this would make 7).

With starting his productive years at age 22, I think he has a real chance, maybe not > 50/50, but I think Xander could be a sneaky HOF level guy when all is said and done.

It will be interesting to see if the Red Sox can rebound, and if not, whether Bogaerts will be on the trade block, and how he'll perform with another organization. Like most players, he has performed better at Fenway than on the road, time will tell!

Transitioning Bogaerts to third base and Devers to first base seems like the most obvious move in the world to me. And then Story could play shortstop.

Can someone who follows the Red Sox closer than I do explain why they haven't seemed to even consider such an idea?
