    Dan Quisenberry
Dennis Eckersley (Looking strictly at his relief appearances)
    Lee Smith
    Rollie Fingers
    Hoyt Wilhelm
    Trevor Hoffman

Eckersley shouldn't be on that list. The fact that he spent half his career as a starter gives him significantly more career value than pure relievers.
I did an average IP per game and if it was under 3.5 then they were a reliever. That's why Eck is on this list. I understand your argument, and of course there's validity to it, I just used a standard guide and stuck to it.

    Wins x 10, Saves x 15, Shutouts x 100, K's x 1, Gold Gloves x 100
    +
Leading the league in the following categories (top 10 get points)
Wins, ERA, Cy Young voting, MVP voting, and Saves.
(The MVP winner and CY young winner gets 500 points)
The Rolaids Relief winner gets 500 points-no points for runner-up etc.
100 points for first place for the other categories (wins, E.R.A. and Saves)
2nd place thru 10th place gets a sliding scale downward 90 points for 2nd, 80 points for 3rd, 10 points for 10th place in Wins, E.R.A. Saves and Cy Young Award and MVP voting. (I could have written that better, hopefully it makes sense)

    +
    Playoffs x 100
    League Championships x 250
    World Series x 500

That's great! I'm not saying I disagree with you, but I think they will receive the same support from the Hall.

If you're saying Mesa will be one and done, agreed.

              QUOTE OF THE WEEK!!!
Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

                      • Changes to the game created the job of closer. They get paid a lot, and they are big parts of the game both on the field, in the clubhouse, and on the payroll. Teams which have good closers function differently late in the game when the score is close than those who do not have good closers. Men of quality who fill that role pretty well have numbers which look like Tug McGraw, or heck even Mean Gene Garber.

But players who are REALLY good, with some great moments, have stats which look like Rivera and Hoffman. I would have to think that we should reward that with a HOF nod. Just as Gossage was better than Dave Smith, I would have to think the difference between Trevor Hoffman and and Jose Mesa has to be respected and used as the difference between someone who is either in or out of the Hall of Fame.

The gap between Hoffman and Isringhausen is wider than the gap beween Dave Winfield and Jim Rice (for example).
                        Your Second Base Coach
Garvey, Lopes, Russell, and Cey started 833 times and the Dodgers went 498-335, for a .598 winning percentage. That’s equal to a team going 97-65 over a season. On those occasions when at least one of them missed his start, the Dodgers were 306-267-1, which is a .534 clip. That works out to a team going 87-75. So having all four of them added 10 wins to the Dodgers per year.

From the street, sounds of Jim Rice fans rejoicing.

The difference between Jason Isringhausen and Paul Wilson is even greater, something no one would have predicted ten years ago. Congratulations to Jason Isringhausen on a fine comeback.

I concur with you Mesa will not make the HOF. One and done would be my prediction, however sorry he'll make the cutoff to be on the ballot.

very true, but as stated in a later post, the game changed here and so did how writers looked at them, otherwise, Sutter and Gossage aren't in the HOF.
