By career numbers, he isn't too far from being HOF material, but a lack of peak value counts against him. Grace is similar to, but clearly below, Keith Hernandez, who has been rejected by voters. So I doubt if he has any chance. John Olerud is likely in the same boat."The numbers are what brought me here; as it appears they brought you."

Slam dunk no brainer first round HOF electee ... that is if he could have put together those stats as a slick fielding MIF or squating behind the plate. As it is, he had a very nice run of about 13 straight years where he was a consistently good - but never outstanding - first baseman.
Mark needed one of two things to happen in order to sneak into the HOF: 1. Have a couple of monster years along the way that would have put him in the top 5 in MVP voting (his high was 13th), or 2. A more "graceful" decline phase that would have allowed him to hang around and collect his 3000th hit somewhere around the age of 43.
BTW, and totally off topic:
It'd be interesting to see if anybody says that Grace's career was too short. I only mention it because he played the same number of seasons as Ryne Sandberg and had exactly 8 more PAs than Ryno. Funny how people some people still insist that Sandberg had a short career when he's 92nd all time in career ABs.97 years and counting ...

Good player who I once thought might give a run at 3000 hits and make things interesting for Cooperstown, but in the end, I probably don't have him among my 30 best firstbasemen of all time. Which isn't such a slight, since after the first 15 or so, the next 20 are really bunched together (and I include Grace somewhere in that group).
