Yes, doofus poet, we know that stuff. Not like it hasn't been discussed a billion times before.

I will say these, though: I've never viewed Piazza as a class act. Never struck me as one.

That "gay" thing was really stupid. I never understood that rumor. Only in New York, I guess.

Piazza seemed to me to be a total presshound, always in front of a microphone. I found it funny when the Onion printed an article staing the Yankees had siggned every MLB player to a contract, it was Piazza alone who was at the mic.

Heck of a player, first ballot HOF'er, but takes after his godfather in terms of the press. Not as bad as Tommy, but who is?

No clue. Apparently some people buy into this nonsense that there's more sports than just Baseball.

Incidentally, could this thread be merged with the other recent discussion of this topic?

Hardaway made some homophobic comments last year stemming over the release of Jon Amechi's (sp?) book. That may not be the right time, but I know Hardaway said something to the effect that he didn't want to play with a gay teammate because they share a locker room, only in harsher terms.

So someone using the term "flamer" makes them "homophobic"? :disbelief:

Well, to some people, it does. Not to me. I don't remember what Hardaway said specifically, but there was a HUGE stink about it for a few days or so, I know that. digglahhh was just making a joke. It was pretty good, actually.

CCN, I am a bit perplexed by this. Having lived in NY throughout Piazza's career, this is the last way I would imagine him being described. Mike was always gracefull, courtious and soft spoken. Frankly, I founf him to be a bit too soft spoken. I always wished he had a bit more of Gary Carters type of attitude. Far from being an attention getter, he tended to be laconic.

I wonder if your perception of him as a press hound comes from the fact that he was the face of a franchise in the largest media market in NY. Piazza was the only in-his-prime 'star' on some terrible teams and the only true 'star' on some ok to good teams. Who else would the press go to ? Mo Vaughn, Roberto Alomar ? The were washed up, useless, fan targets. Nobody cared what people like them said unless it was "good by". Todd Ziele ? Timo Perez ? Rey Ordonez ? They don't exactly sell news papers or boost ratings.

Piazza was the go to guy. He delt with the demands professional & appropriatly, (for NY). He was no Mike Hampton. I would never fault him for that, but rather praise him.

I think his teamates John Franco & Al Lieter were much more the type to go out of their way to seek out the media to feed their egos.

I can tell you also, having frequently met Piazza in settings away from the game, he was humble, genuine & courteous in person.

Tom Lasorda is one of the all-time biggest blowhards in any sport at any time.

I've no doubt he's a good person. But, it seemed like he was involved in a lot of press conferences for things I didn't think needed a press conference. I know you're not a Clemens fan, certainly not in the last few months in light of all the allegations against him, but he sure seemed from this unbiased perspective he was behind the mic at a lot of planned press sessions.

I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Maybe he did get some media savvy from LaSorda, which is why he was in front of the mic so much. I don't equate the two personality wise. LaSorda is one big reason I grew up disliking the Dodgers. As much as Piazza was in front of the cameras talking he didn't come close to approaching LaSorda's penchant for self-promotion and braggadocio.

                              Holy Occam's Razor, Batman.

You replied to a post referencing Piazza's famously press conference to confirm his heterosexuality. In that response you referred to Piazza as a "flamer." Is there another reasonable conclusion to draw than the use of "flamer" was an epithet? Even if it was used without malice.

As far as I know Piazza doesn't lurk BBF, baiting and trolling. So, what else does "flamer" mean?

For the record, I thought your post was sarcasitc. As was mine. But, if somebody took genuine offense for it, you couldn't legitimately argue that you didn't invite it.
