  • Brett's 98% HOF vote

I was wondering if anyone else was surprised by the remarkably and astonishingly high percentage that George Brett was elected into the HOF. That's really high!

I'm more astonished that no one has ever received 100% of the vote. There are a number of players for whom there is no good reason to not vote for.

I agree. Like who were the fools who didn't vote for Mike Schmidt or Tom Seaver?

One guy who didn't vote for Michael Jack was actually from the immediate Philly suburbs, covered the Phillies. Don't even remember the name of the paper but Brown, I think, was his name. (Bill Brown)?

This guy really despised Schmidt for some reason -- everybody in the reading area knew it was personal. Don't know how he kept his job for so long. I, for one, couldn't stomach the handful of his columns I did read regarding anything baseball (too bitter/sour).

The writer had already been diagnosed with a terminal cancer, and died not too long after the voting.

        PS I hope/believe Cal will top Brett's %.

Or Mays, Aaron, Mantle, DiMaggio (wasn't even a 1st ballot HoFer!!). Even Cobb and Ruth didn't 100% of the vote. That's so strange.
Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

I am more interested in finding the fools who voted for people like Tom Candiotti, Terry Steinbach, and Tony Phillips.

Brett is one of those guys who should be a 100%. I remeber when the vote was annonced that the things that surprised me was that Ryan got a higher percentage than Brett (which I viewed as ridiculous) and Fisk didn't get elected at all.

For some it is the BBWAA mentality.
I remembering seeing one Sports Reporters and there was one of the guys on there who said he did not vote for Ryan becuase he thought no one should ever receive 100%.
                How stupid is that!!??

Writers that vote for the HOF have a crappy track record and I dont see it changing in the near future.

Cal Ripken Jr has the best chance to reach 100% but I am sure a writer will muck it up and vote for Terry Steinbach instead.

I think the writers ballot should be shown to the fans of baseball. Why should writers be on a pedestal of power and not be accountable for their actions?

The ballots should run in their columns the day after the elections or be in print somewhere for all to read.......The writers are all about a story so we as fans deserve the whole story.

Now, that'd make for an intersting read. I wonder how votes would change if a writer had to stand behind his ballot? Many of the national writers (ESPN.com and such) who have votes do articles about who they vote for...but it'd be interesting if they HAD to print it.

As bad as the writer's are, all I can say is that they sure did a lot better job than the old veteren's committee did!
