So, many of you feel that some players are disadvantaged by their home park more so than others are. Are there some players who have a unique ability to take advantage of their home park. If they have an ability to thrive is that not something they should be given credit for.

Going through this thread I have seen more then one person say, "I dont think he cracks my top 50." Along with a few, "I dont think he cracks my top 50 but he is in my top 100."

Lemme get this straight, are you guys saying you have a top 50 of all time? or is this just a figure of speech? Myself I cant even peg a top five of all time. Although here goes (likely to change upon further reflection or whos stats I am looking at in a given moment.

That's only position players, so Cy Young is of course nowhere to be found. I have him 5th amongst pitchers.

Cobb has been a bit overrated by history IMO, he played in a weak league and didn't really dominate his league quite like Ruth, Mays, Mantle, Wagner, Bonds, or even Schmidt

Schmidt was the best player in his league 8 times, the same amount as Ruth and I believe 3rd all time behind only Ruth and Mantle. He didn't separate quite as much from the pack as those guys, but to me that tells more about the strength of the league he played in than that he wasn't as good. 70s/80s players generally are horribly underrated because of that.

I have Mays over Ruth with a combination of fielding, league quality and longevity. Basically Ruth is a better hitter but not as much as a quick look at the stats would suggest, and Mays is better in just about every other category, plus he played in a fully integrated, fully devolped league.

--I separate pitcher from position players and can't rank nearly as far with pitchers. Too many of them are very close in achievement. There is also the complication of comparign great peak, short career pitchers with pitchers of lesser skill, but much greater career achievment. There are some shooting stars amoung position players, but it is far more common amoung pitchers and I think you have to be at least a little more forgiving of pitchers who break down earlier.
--If Koufax was a posiiton player of similar career path he wouldn't make my top 50, but he is top 20 amoung pitchers. Vance and Newhouser rank in the 20s for me and might not be top 100 if they had the same pattern as position players.

Agree with me or disagree with me (I'm sure that almost everyone but Bill Burgess would disagree with me at that particular point), but I can pretty much guarantee you that I know more about baseball than you do, and that pretty much everyone here would agree with me on that.

Goslin was a fine player who, unfortunately, played half his career in a very tough ballpark and played in a time of mega-stars.

Goslin suffers from being a Washington Senator, a team that no longer exists; it died twice.

Goslin also suffers from being inducted into the HOF with Heinie Manush and Kiki Cuyler, both of whom are criticized picks. Goslin was better than both of them.

--Goslin has been largely forgotten. A little surprising given his catchy nickname, key role on 5 pennant winners (including all 3 in Senators history) and his overall outstanding play. Had he played any place but Griffith Stadium he would have hit alot more HR, but he managed to drive home a ton of runs with doubles and triples anyway. He was a very good defensive player as well.
--In the Buckerfoot Al thread I mentioned Goslin earlier today as one of 8 LFers who could rank anywhere from 8-15 all time at the position. Even if you put him at the top of that group its going to leave him out of the top 50. If he is closer to the bottom he doesn't even make the top 100. We may have the chance to slot him in one of those groups soon. Check out the thread Ranking the Legends to see if you'd be interested in doing that.

I've got him at 14 with Simmons at 13. 12 is Fred Clarke and 11 is Tim Raines.

I've always considered Goslin to be a poor man's Al Simmons. Perhaps this isn't really fair, as they are not really that far apart. A middle class man's Al Simmons maybe? Does anyone rank Goslin ahead?
