  • Fred McGriff

Would Fred McGriff be a first ballot Hall of Famer if he had played his entire career with the New York Yankees?

I see alot of support from time to time for Don Mattingly for short peak value but very little support for McGriff.I know it is a peak vs longevity question but why do we short change McGriff?

Longtime first baseman Fred McGriff was inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame, the only player elected out of the eight nominees under consideration by the 16-person Era Committee. McGriff was a unanimous vote, getting votes from all 16 members.

Congrats to Fred McGriff. Still I have a hard time seeing him make the HOF while Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens are still being punished. Especially Roger Clemens who was exceptional to watch for so many years before the steroid crap started. It doesn't make sense to me.

With McGriff it feels like a popularity thing with this special committee. I never thought he was a HOFer when he played. A 5 time All Star and and a steady home run guy for a long time. He had a great career but not HOF IMO. He's close enough so it's OK. lol Now maybe they will consider Al Oliver next.
