  • Ranking the HoF Players: 66-70

Project Summary: To rank the worthiness of the players inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame from most worthy to least worthy.

Election Format: Voters will submit ballots ranking their 10 most worthy remaining Hall of Fame players in order of worthiness. Each first place vote will be worth 10 points, with each successive rank being worth one point less than the previous rank, ending in a tenth place vote being worth 1 point. Players will also receive one additional point for each ballot they are listed on and players must be listed on at least three ballots in order to be elected. The five players with the highest support at the end of each election will be elected in the order of their support. Elections will last approximately seven days.
    - Tiebreakers: In the event of a tie among players at the end of an election, the first tiebreaker will be the total number of ballot appearance in that election. The second tiebreaker will be total number of points irrespective of number of ballots. The third tiebreaker will be the number first place votes in that election. In the event that there remains a tie for the fifth and final spot in an election, there will be a three day run-off by poll. Players that lose in a run-off will slot into the next ranking spot.

Factors to Consider: As this project focuses on players inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, subjective qualities beyond just statistics should be taken into consideration in determining a player's relative worthiness. In that vein, the voting guidelines that the BBWAA is to follow in actual National Baseball Hall of Fame elections, may be instructive (though not necessarily determinative in this project): "Voting shall be based upon the player's record, playing ability, integrity, sportsmanship, character, and contributions to the team(s) on which the player played."

Player Eligibility: Only players that have been elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame as players are eligible, including Negro League players and 19th Century players. A complete list of individuals that have been inducted as players is available at the National Baseball Hall of Fame's website, and is recreated below along with each player's corresponding BBF Rank as determined by this project:

It's tough going at this point, but I'm surprised that Harmon Killebrew has received very little support and Tim Keefe no support at all to this point. John Clarkson has received some support the last few elections, and is Keefe really that different?

As for Killebrew, until the juiced era, he ranked 5th all time in homeruns and was considered one of the most fearsome power hitters in the game's history. In many ways, Killebrew was the prototype for the type of hitter that became valued during the juiced era - lots of power and a high OBP. Beyond that, he was a six time homerun champion, three times led in RBI, the 1969 AL MVP (plus five more top 5 finishes), and the biggest star in the history of the Twins franchise. I realize some people will say why Killebrew's contemporary 1Bman, Willie McCovey, who had a slightly higher OPS+ and WAR. My nod goes to Killebrew because I believe he was the bigger star for longer (13 to 6 lead in All Star selections, much greater MVP support throughout his career, plus the greater homerun hitting notoriety), and I like that Killebrew's career had the added versatility of playing nearly 800 games at 3B.

Killebrew is the next name I have below Clarkson. For me it's a case of his horrible glove driving him down the all-time rankings a bit. Not that McCovey was stellar (far from it), but Killer in today's game would be a DH. They're very close in value to me.

I remain amazed at how little support Snider gets. He was a truly great player, one of only a few real 5 tool players. And, he played a key role on an iconic team. When they used to compare Willie, Mickey, and the Duke they were serious. Duke wasn't quite as good and injuries cut short his run of great seasons but he was still a magical player. I don't get it, frankly.

I think we're getting to a point where voters have a lot of players closely clustered together, so there aren't going to be many standouts. That being said, I just did a quick count and saw that Snider was already listed on 7 of the 10 or 11 ballots that have been submitted, so that should give him a fighting chance and would look to be a good bet for election in one of the next two elections.
