  • BBF Hall of Fame 2012 annual election

The election is now open until 7 am EDT December 8, 2012.

    Preface
The Baseball Fever Hall of Fame (BBFHoF) was established to honor the greatest players and contributors in the History of Baseball through a series of annual elections held between the end of the regular season and the announcement of the annual BBWAA elections to Cooperstown. The 2011 election is here

    Participation
Baseball Fever posters in good standing are eligible (and strongly encouraged) to participate in both the discussion and voting phases of the election. Those who do are, by their participation, agreeing to these rules. We work on the simple premise of “one man, one vote” wherein the Director of the BBFHoF retains the right to strike from the official record additional ballots cast by anyone attempting to pass off multiple ballots from the same individual. Towards that end, if two or more actual individuals intend to cast their respective ballots from the same IP address, it must be cleared with me in advance. Those who oversee the elections process operate said process with integrity and we expect all of our participants to conduct themselves both civilly and honorably.

    Process
There are two elections, held simultaneously, each year.

Candidates eligible for the Players Election must meet one or more of the following criteria to be eligible to receive votes: a) the player has not appeared on the 40-man roster or the Disabled List in the most recent season, b) the player is officially retired (or dead) by September 1 of the last completed season, c) the player is over 40 and did not play in the most recent completed season. Players are to be considered on the basis of their performance and its impact on their team/s. Ballots cast in the Players Election may list up to 25 eligible candidates.

Candidates eligible for the Contributors Election must either be retired or at least 60 years of age by the completion of the last regular season. Contributors are to be considered for the quality and impact of their contribution/s to their team/s and/or the sport at large. “Contributions” may include an individual’s playing career. Ballots cast in the Contributors Election may list of up 15 eligible candidates.

Both players and contributors are eligible for consideration if they were associated with the major, minor, negro, Japanese or other international leagues including, but not limited to the US American Leagues, Cuban Winter League (to 1950), Mexican League (to 1950), Puerto Rican Winter League (to 1950), 1937 Dominican League and the California Winter League.

Once inducted on either ballot, an individual is no longer eligible for consideration in any other capacity.

    Policies
It is extremely helpful if voters post their ballots with candidates listed in descending alphabetical order of candidates’ last names. Individuals receiving votes who cannot be identified will not be counted. Ballots which exceed the maximum ballot length will not be counted. Ballots may be edited after their initial post, however, changes to a ballot are not guaranteed to be counted unless I am notified by PM of the change before the end of voting.

        Newly eligible players:
        Vladimir Guerrero
        Jorge Posada
        Manny Ramirez
        Ivan Rodriguez
        Jason Varitek

I don't know of any newly eligible contributors

If anyone has any questions or thinks I've omitted someone, speak now or they will not be included on time, thus limiting their chances. This is why I am delaying the start of the election, to ensure we've got everyone who belongs.

I think I will keep this election open until 7 am EDT December 8 once I open it, given that the project is an annual thing and we'll run into the Thanksgiving holiday during this run.

I will try to give a push to Jacob Ruppert:

It looks like given the choice, most people would take Jacob Ruppert over A.J. Reach as a contributor. I do endorse both owners as contributors but I believe Reach contributed more to the actual game of baseball than Ruppert did. I also believe there is a disproportionate number of executives in the HoF tied to the city of New York. Reach would introduce some much needed diversity, even though he did his work in nearby Philadelphia. Anyone care to debate?
Here's what pushes Ruppert over Reach for me: he hired Ed Barrow, and at least approved the hires of Miller Huggins and Joe McCarthy. Additionally, he pushed Barrow to develop a farm system, and even chose (over Barrow's preferred choice) George Weiss to head that system. Weiss would be another important part of making the Yankees so dominant, first as head of the farm system and later as GM. That's in addition to the money Ruppert poured into making the Yankees a powerhouse. I see Ruppert, Barrow, Weiss as the front office trio that built the Yankees into a powerhouse and kept it there through the early 60's and who hired the aforementioned two managers and Weiss' choice of Stengel later.

Here's two sources talking about Barrow, but who mention Ruppert as an important actor:

from the SABR bioproject on Barrow http://sabr.org/bioproj/person/c9fdbace:
By 1932, after paying $125,000 for minor leaguers Lyn Lary and Jimmie Reese, neither of whom turned into stars, the success of the Cardinals minor league operation, and changes to the player limit and option rules, the Yankees recognized that they needed to develop a farm system. Following the acquisition of the Newark International League franchise, the club hired another future Hall of Fame executive, George Weiss, to run it. Barrow actually wanted to hire Bob Connery of the St. Paul Saints with whom the Yankees had a long relationship, but Ruppert insisted on Weiss.
and from an interview of the author of a full length biography of Barrow, Dan Levitt http://baseballanalysts.com/archives...th_dan_lev.php :
In the 1930s the onset of the Depression led to new rules regarding the ownership of minor league franchises. With these revised, more favorable rules in place, owner Jacob Ruppert demanded Barrow start a farm system. Barrow quickly developed the best minor league organization in the league while his scouts redirected their efforts to nation's best amateurs to stock it.

Another I'll plug is Vic Harris:

From Jim Riley's Biographical Encyclopedia of Negro League Baseball page 361:

He was combative with umpires which contrasted with
the generally quiet approach he used with his players, never saying too much and preferring to inspire them by example to give their maximum effort. Although he was not noted as a brilliant strategist the players responded to the fiery manager by giving good performances on the baseball diamond.
The Grays won pennants every year from 1937-1945, and Harris led them to the first six, had to relinquish the head job for wartime work, and returned for the ninth. After two years without a pennant, he led them to another Negro League Series win. He had plenty of talent on hand to help him do that. But one cannot ignore that great talents are often accompanied by significant egos. He was able to keep that talent with those egos focused on the goal of staying on top. He was also a good if not great player, appearing in six East-West Negro League all-star games. In many ways, Joe Torre is a good analogy.

Chipper Jones announced his retirement. Does that mean he is eligible this year?

Edgar Renterria played in 2011, but not 2012. I can't remember if he was on the ballot last year. If not, he should definitely be included as an eligible.

Not that I think he will get elected, but given his age, if he hasn't been eligible in the past, Jamie Moyer deserves to be on the list of newly eligible (I can't remember whether or not he was eligible last year).

                Other possibilities:

                Tim Wakefield
                Derek Lee
                Orlando Cabrera

If anyone wants to vote for Renteria, Wakefield, Lee or Cabrera, they may. Chipper and Moyer aren't eligible, as we're only including guys who didn't play in 2012. Assuming Chipper and Moyer don't play in 2013, they'll be eligible next year.

I forget how you're handling minor league play. Manny Ramirez played 17 games in AAA after the A's signed him. If this is being disregarded, then Miguel Tejada should also be on the new eligibles list.

He's 38 and hit .259 in AAA. I'd say he can go on the list.

On another topic, I think I'll open the election sometime tomorrow night.

Bolded players/contributors are new to my ballot for 2012. Dom Dimaggio, Cesar Cedeno and the two elected last year are replaced by Vladimir Guerrero, Jorge Posada, Manny Ramirez, Ivan Rodriguez, all of whom are no brainers, IMO. Ring Lardner and last year's elected contributors are replaced by Vic Harris, Danny Murtaugh and Jacob Ruppert. It would be fitting if Ruppert gets elected here, then gets elected to the NBHoFM via this year's VC.
