I guess we should have a results thread : http://baseballhall.org/news/press-r...-hall-fame-pre

Deacon White is the oldest HOFer elected as a player. He's the 3rd oldest HOFer overall.

I think they did a pretty good job this time around. I'm not crazy about Hank O'Day and think Al Reach and Bill Dahlen deserved to get in, but Deacon White is a solid choice as a player and there are already several short stops from Dahlen's era in the NBHoFM.

It looks like Dahlen has a solid chance of eventually making it. Only fell two votes short.

Funny. Same with last year, when they got Santo right. What's going on? I'm scared...

I would have still put Dahlen in over White. I also do give them credit though for making some good choices. Maybe with Blyleven on the commitee you will have somebody who can relate to why these guys should or should not be in.

"I have the ultimate respect for Whitesox fans. They were as miserable as the Cubs and Redsox fans ever were but always had the good decency to keep it to themselves. And when they finally won the World Series, they celebrated without annoying every other fan in the country."--Jim Caple, ESPN (Jan. 12, 2011)

I'm pumped Deacon's in. He's been a favorite of mine for a while now. Bummer about Dahlen, too.

And what's up with umpires in the Hall if being a DH isn't enough?

What team is Deacon White going to be associated with in the Hall? The Boston NA team?

He played the most games with Buffalo, so maybe them.

Could be. I did think of that. But it's not really his work with the NL Buffalo team that makes him Hall-worthy. That's when he was moved to 3B and those weren't really his best years.
But the Hall seems to have a knack for shying away from honoring the NA much, so maybe they would try to associate him with an NL team.

I think a DH is enough, and I hope the Hall of Fame is over the Reggie Jackson attitude that only players should be in there--if Reggie had been a manager, he would say only managers should be in there. O'Day umpired in the major leagues for nearly 35 years, was considered one of the best of his time, and worked the second greatest number of World Series--10, behind only Bill Klem, whom he apparently recruited and was the best ever. So, a good choice.

Now let's talk about Jacob Ruppert getting in because he had the money to build Yankee Stadium and enable Ed Barrow to buy great ballplayers.

I'll admit Deacon was tops on the list. But my infatuation for Deacon has just gone so far off the deep end that this is kind of unreal.

Congrats to the White and Ruppert family; solid choices. No issue with O'Day compared to the rest of the umpires who are already in.

Ruppert's induction was a good move, especially in light of the recent induction of a less worthy owner in Walter O'Malley and the long-ago induction of an owner whose only claim to fame was being the last holdout against integration (Tom Yawkey). The legacy of Ruppert's ownership was to give the Yankees all that we associate with them in terms of their basic aura that subsequent generations are always under pressure to uphold. There's almost no meaningful Yankee history before Ruppert bought the team.
