  • Dead-Ball Era HoF: Round 1

    Rule changes in red

My last few projects fell through. I'm going to keep this simple and hope it gets attention since people are voting in the "Really Big HoF."

For this project, the dead-ball era is defined as the period in baseball from 1900-1919. My intent is to create a HoF solely on the players within its bounds. There will be about 150 when we're done.

All you have to do is submit a ballot of 15 players. Each round we will induct the 10 most vote-getters of everyone's ballots. In subsequent rounds, you replenish your ballots with more players. Your ballots should be prioritized in by how strongly you want a player to get in. The first five of your ballot receive 3 points, then next 5 receive 2 points, and the next 5 receive one point. As we go along, the guys in the lower tiers will be bumped up and receive more points. For example:

    #5- Bob (3 points)
    #6- Bill (2 points)

Assuming Bob is elected in Round 1, you'll most likely bump Bill to the #5 slot in Round 2, which rewards him 3 points instead of 2. Then maybe you bump the #15 guy, Steve, to #14, allowing you to select a new player for your #15 slot.

A player qualifies for this project if: he had at least 2500 PA or 1500 IP during the years 1900-1919 OR he spent his entire career within the confines of the 1900-1919 period. The only exception is Smoky Joe Wood. Please consider the entire career of the player. When you submit your ballots, please separate the players in the mentioned tiers. I also ask that you alphabetize them by last name within these tiers (see mine).

I hope I can muster some participants.

"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”

Just to confirm -- Are we considering only their contributions within the period from 1900-19? E.g., for Walter Johnson, I should ignore what he did from 1920-27?

I know your not asking me but I figured to include everything. Who can make a deadball HoF on 2000 PA's or 1000 IP alone?

I think your projects would thrive if your rules were better thought out. Before I do a project, I like to submit my idea to the "wisdom of the crowd" before kicking it off.

In this case, I strongly suggest you up the qualifiers to 2500 PA and 1400 IP. (I did not just pick those numbers randomly, I spent time looking at who those standards would include and exclude.) With your qualifiers, guys like Ruth, Hornsby, Heilmann, Rixey and Faber are eligible as dead-ball players. With my suggestion they would not be. We all know those players made their HOF case in the 1920's, not the dead-ball era.

              Frank Baker
              Eddie Plank
              Joe Tinker

Ruth and Hornsby didn't have enough time logged during the Dead Ball era to bump out any of the above. Mathewson cracked tier 1 over Pete Alexander because Alexander didn't pitch as much in the Dead Ball era.

I had Ruth in mind, but didn't realize the others.

Rules have been changed to 2500 PA and 1500 IP. I will notify bluesky5.

If it applies. The only big names are probably Plank, Bender, Kauff

150 players may be a bit much. As I noted, there are fewer than 400 with any appreciable amount of playing time in the era from 1900-1919. By the time we get to 100 or so, we may be scraping the bottom of the barrel.

So if you're looking to induct 10 players per election, what happens if two guys tie for 10th? Do you induct them both and then aim for 9 the next election?
