  • Dead-Ball Era HoF: Round 2

Seven votes last time. I hoped for more, but it was the first round, it's the holidays, and the first inductees are rather unanimous.

For this project, the dead-ball era is defined as the period in baseball from 1900-1919. My intent is to create a HoF solely on the players within its bounds. There will be about 150 when we're done.

All you have to do is submit a ballot of 15 players. Each round we will induct the 10 most vote-getters of everyone's ballots. In subsequent rounds, you replenish your ballots with more players. Your ballots should be prioritized in by how strongly you want a player to get in. The first five of your ballot receive 3 points, then next 5 receive 2 points, and the next 5 receive one point. As we go along, the guys in the lower tiers will be bumped up and receive more points. For example:

    #5- Bob (3 points)
    #6- Bill (2 points)

Assuming Bob is elected in Round 1, you'll most likely bump Bill to the #5 slot in Round 2, which rewards him 3 points instead of 2. Then maybe you bump the #15 guy, Steve, to #14, allowing you to select a new player for your #15 slot.

A player qualifies for this project if: he had at least 2500 PA or 1500 IP during the years 1900-1919 OR he spent his entire career within the confines of the 1900-1919 period. The only exception is Smoky Joe Wood. Please consider the entire career (NL, AL, FL) of the player. When you submit your ballots, please separate the players in the mentioned tiers. I also ask that you alphabetize them by last name within these tiers (see mine).

Courtesy of user DJC, this is everyone eligible. I also added Smoky Joe Wood, as he is the ONLY exception. Remember, other players are eligible if they spent their entire careers in the span.

The list of mine that you posted above only includes all players with at least 2500 PA or 1500 IP (plus Wood). Based on your rules, there are also many, many other players who qualify just because they played their entire career during the period from 1900 through 1919. I made a list (here) later down the thread which includes all players who qualify and who have at least 2000 PA or 1000 IP from 1900-1919. You might want to work from that instead, though you'd have to remove the players who were elected last round, and you might want to specify that there are players with fewer PA or IP who still qualify.

"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”

I do it to. I encourage people to look at other's ballots for the sake of remembering players. For all my love of this era, I'm ashamed to say that I still forget Nap Lajoie
