  • Really Big Hall of Fame: 1904

Welcome to the Really Big Hall of Fame, a project dedicated to developing a much more inclusive Hall of Fame. We're all "big Hall" guys here.

This is like the Progressive Hall of Fame, but with one catch. You MUST vote for 12 players in each election. It doesn't matter if you wouldn't vote for them "in real life." This is the Really Big Hall of Fame. We want a lot of inductees.

But please take the voting seriously. Please do not just vote ten random players--consider who is on the ballot and vote for the ten who you think were the best, who are most deserving for election.

To ensure that people follow the "12 player rule", I will be requiring that participating members submit their ballots as posts, rather than via a poll. That way I can ensure accountability.

    Rules and information

    1. A player is eligible five years from the date of his final major league game.
    2. A player may appear on the ballot as many as 15 times.
    3. A player must receive 65% of the vote to be elected.
    4. A player must receive at least 5% of the vote to remain on the ballot.
    5. Elections will last seven days (one week).
    6. Usually, a player must have played 10 seasons to be eligible. But since this is the Really Big Hall of Fame, (admittedly arbitrary) exceptions will made.
    7. For the time being, only major league players will be considered, including NA players. Negro League votes will come later on.
    8. For the time being, a "Would Have Voted For" of fluid allowable size* is permitted. This will save players from being eliminated from the ballot, even if they do not receive any votes.
    9. Please consider only a person's playing career.

*Zero players if the ballot contains less than 20 names, one player if it contains between 20 and 29 names, two players if it contains between 30 and 39 names and three players if it contains more than 40 names.

Select your best 12 from this ballot of 25 players. You must vote for 12 players. To save players from ballot elimination, you are also allowed a "would have voted for" list--a list of one player you would have voted for had you enough room. This will save them from dropping off the ballot even if they do not receive a vote.

Billy Nash is listed both as being on this year's ballot and as having been dropped from last year's ballot. Where does he belong?

Bill Hutchinson is also missing from this year's ballot, but he wasn't eliminated last year.

That's what you get for hastily posting the thread without properly proofing it. Don't be like Cowtipper, kids.

(By the way, I do know the Hall of Fame stats and info aren't updated...I just wanted to get this thread going before doing those. They take a surprisingly long time to do).

That's what you get for hastily posting the thread without properly proofing it. Don't be like Cowtipper, kids.

(By the way, I do know the Hall of Fame stats and info aren't updated...I just wanted to get this thread going before doing those. They take a surprisingly long time to do).
Weren't most of players dropped in the first 2 elections supposed to be reinstated this year? I ask because it affects my ballot quite a bit. I would definitely have Dave Orr and several others on my ballot.

Of those dropped, I would vote for these players eventually:

                  Candy Cummings
                  Jack Farrell
                  Bob Ferguson
                  Silver Flint
                  Dick McBride
                  Tommy McCarthy
                  Dave Orr
                  Jack Rowe
                  Will White
                  Ned Williamson

Of the holdovers/newcomers, this would be my ballot:

                  Bill Hutchinson
                  Bill Lange
                  Ed McKean
                  Bid McPhee
                  Ed Morris
                  Billy Nash
                  Fred Pfeffer
                  Jack Stivetts
                  Mike Tiernan
                  Harry Wright

These are the players who have been dropped who would replace Bill Hutchinson, Ed Morris, Billy Nash, Jack Stivetts and Harry Wright if they are eligible:

                  Tommy McCarthy
                  Dave Orr
                  Jack Rowe
                  Will White
                  Ned Williamson

Yes, I re-added a handful. I'm not going to re-add them all at once, because that would just create the problem we had in the first place...too big a ballot.

                    These guys:

                    Mark Baldwin
                    George Bradley
                    Tom Burns
                    Charlie Comiskey
                    Candy Cummings
                    Abner Dalrymple
                    John Denny
                    Jack Farrell
                    Bob Ferguson

                      Candy Cummings
                      Frank Dwyer
                      Bill Hutchinson
                      Matt Kilroy
                      Bill Lange
                      Ed McKean
                      Sadie McMahon
                      Bid McPhee
                      Ed Morris
                      Billy Nash
                      Jack Stivetts
                      Mike Tiernan
                      ------
                      Jake Stenzel

You might consider not dropping players if they receive no support, at least for now. There are more than a dozen players who have been eliminated (or were never on the ballot) who I'd have voted for over the last guy to make the cut for this ballot.

Just as a heads up of the players mentioned that were dropped by JJPM I would vote for them as well given time:

                            Tommy McCarthy
                            Dave Orr
                            Jack Rowe
                            Will White
                            Ned Williamson

Orr and Williamson probably would have made this list. This is why I sometimes get peeved with the "well if he didn't get any support back before WWII when people were alive who saw him play ..." types of arguments we see elsewhere.
