  • Fergie Jenkins 2013 HOF Interview: A PEDs user may already be in the HOF

During Fergie Jenkins' phone interview the day it was announced that the BBWAA inducted no one into the HOF, he stated that a few years ago, the writers elected someone who played in the 80s and 90s who used PEDs. The most likely person he was referring to is Rickey Henderson.

If Rickey or anyone else already in the HOF came out and said that they did indeed use PEDs, do you think this would open the floodgates for the many PEDs users currently on the BBWAA ballot?

Yes, it would allow for other PEDs users to gain election.

Yes, it would fragment the writers further resulting in even more dissention.

No, an event like this would not have an impact on future elections.

Is this your assumption or did Jenkins say this?

I heard (what I'm assuming is) the whole interview. Jenkins refused to name a name or even elaborate. Henderson was never named. Could be Candy Cummings.

No, he said the '80s and '90s. Wait, I know! Maybe he meant the 1880s and 1890s. Pud Galvin, I'm looking at you....

          This.

I'd really really hope Henderson never juiced. Always been a big fan of the guy.

I actually do think if there's a steroid user in the HOF already, it will make it easier for guys like Clemens, Bonds, and Arod to get in. Guys with numbers that rank them among the best ever. In cases like Mcgwire and Sosa, I'm not sure it makes much of a difference for them.

Its not nice to run around accusing people with no evidence. But, if Fergie is right, who could it be?

Honestly, I would have thought Nolan Ryan. However, since you said it was someone elected in the last few years, then it obviously can't be Ryan.

I would say it's Ripken or Ryan.

There could be more than one.

I don't think such a revelation would make much, if any impact. The anti-juicer voters will be more anti than ever. They won't want to compound the mistake by electing another dirty player. The pro-juicers will vote as they would have voted anyway. I don't think many of them are ambivalent and likely to be swayed on the issue.

Assuming Jenkins is correct that a player from the 80's and 90's currently in the HOF used steroids, a very strong suspect in my mind (besides for the obvious Henderson and Ripken assumptions) would be Paul Molitor. He was one of the best "old" players ever. He was a significantly better hitter in his mid-late 30's than he was in his 20's.
                          My top 10 players:

                          1. Babe Ruth
                          2. Barry Bonds
                          3. Ty Cobb
                          4. Ted Williams
                          5. Willie Mays
                          6. Alex Rodriguez
                          7. Hank Aaron
                          8. Honus Wagner
                          9. Lou Gehrig
                          10. Mickey Mantle

Yeah I feel alot of the players in the 80's and 90's were using alot more than we think. Some of these guys played for a pretty long time and it's hard for me to believe they did it clean. There is no proof so I guess they get a pass but I feel alot of these guys are hyprocites for saying the steroid era are a bunch of cheats.

How would Jenkins have first hand knowledge of a current HoFer taking PED's? Did this player tell Jenkins personally that he took PEDs?
