Welcome to Albright’s Musings v2.0
The first version of Albright’s Musings had a lot of stuff that relied on Win Shares, which is no longer the main uber-stat for discussion. Besides that, over time the material had gotten somewhat disorganized. Finally, I’d never tried a reasonably comprehensive examination of the viable candidates for the Hall of Fame from Japan, the Negro Leagues and the majors. This version attempts to address all those issues.
One thing I will do is use some place-holder posts to enable me to keep the organization of the material together. That way, I can minimize how much stuff I have to move around to deal with new players and other new additions.
I’m going to lock this thread and maintain it that way to keep comment posts from messing up the organization. I’m going to provide a separate discussion thread for anyone who wants to comment on anything here. It’s all appeared elsewhere, and comments at the original locations are welcome. But if you don’t want to search for it, use the discussion threads. The links to them are
Players: http://www.baseball-fever.com/showth...cussion-thread
Contributors: http://www.baseball-fever.com/showth...ibutor-section
Appendices: http://www.baseball-fever.com/showth...ight-s-Musings
I’ll provide indexes to ease navigation. The first section is the players, who , after some introductory issues, are listed alphabetically (and I hope to keep this up over time, but we’ll see how it works out in practice. The second section is the contributors, again listed alphabetically. Third is Statistical Issues, which is commentary on stats and their uses. Fourth is Japanese Baseball, which is self-explanatory. Fifth is Negro League Baseball, which again is self-explanatory. Finally there is the great catch-all category of Miscellaneous.
I’ll provide index posts for each category.
It’s kind of organized like a book, but not one you must read in order. You can go right to a player, contributor or issue you are interested in, and it should make sense without reading all the other stuff. I will refer a lot in the player comments to my rating system, and if you need to know how that works, it’s covered at the beginning of the player section. Beyond that, though, I hope I’ve made it so things stand pretty well on their own.
I’ve made heavy use of Wikipedia in the contributor section, and of Baseball-Reference’s database functions in the player section. All citations of WAR are from BB-ref. Those sources have been invaluable in this effort.
I hope you find this compendium useful.
