Updated Baseball Fever Policy

Baseball Fever Policy

I. Purpose of this announcement:

This announcement describes the policies pertaining to the operation of Baseball Fever.

Baseball Fever is a moderated baseball message board which encourages and facilitates research and information exchange among fans of our national pastime. The intent of the Baseball Fever Policy is to ensure that Baseball Fever remains an extremely high quality, extremely low "noise" environment.

Baseball Fever is administrated by three principal administrators:
webmaster - Baseball Fever Owner
The Commissioner - Baseball Fever Administrator
Macker - Baseball Fever Administrator

And a group of forum specific super moderators. The role of the moderator is to keep Baseball Fever smoothly and to screen posts for compliance with our policy. The moderators are ALL volunteer positions, so please be patient and understanding of any delays you might experience in correspondence.

II. Comments about our policy:

Any suggestions on this policy may be made directly to the webmaster.

III. Acknowledgments:

This document was based on a similar policy used by SABR.

IV. Requirements for participation on Baseball Fever:

Participation on Baseball Fever is available to all baseball fans with a valid email address, as verified by the forum's automated system, which then in turn creates a single validated account. Multiple accounts by a single user are prohibited.

By registering, you agree to adhere to the policies outlined in this document and to conduct yourself accordingly. Abuse of the forum, by repeated failure to abide by these policies, will result in your access being blocked to the forum entirely.

V. Baseball Fever Netiquette:

Participants at Baseball Fever are required to adhere to these principles, which are outlined in this section.
a. All posts to Baseball Fever should be written in clear, concise English, with proper grammar and accurate spelling. The use of abbreviations should be kept to a minimum; when abbreviation is necessary, they should be either well-known (such as etc.), or explained on their first use in your post.

b. Conciseness is a key attribute of a good post.

c. Quote only the portion of a post to which you are responding.

d. Standard capitalization and punctuation make a large difference in the readability of a post. TYPING IN ALL CAPITALS is considered to be "shouting"; it is a good practice to limit use of all capitals to words which you wish to emphasize.

e. It is our policy NOT to transmit any defamatory or illegal materials.

f. Personal attacks of any type against Baseball Fever readers will not be tolerated. In these instances the post will be copied by a moderator and/or administrator, deleted from the site, then sent to the member who made the personal attack via a Private Message (PM) along with a single warning. Members who choose to not listen and continue personal attacks will be banned from the site.

g. It is important to remember that many contextual clues available in face-to-face discussion, such as tone of voice and facial expression, are lost in the electronic forum. As a poster, try to be alert for phrasing that might be misinterpreted by your audience to be offensive; as a reader, remember to give the benefit of the doubt and not to take umbrage too easily. There are many instances in which a particular choice of words or phrasing can come across as being a personal attack where none was intended.

h. The netiquette described above (a-g) often uses the term "posts", but applies equally to Private Messages.

VI. Baseball Fever User Signature Policy

A signature is a piece of text that some members may care to have inserted at the end of ALL of their posts, a little like the closing of a letter. You can set and / or change your signature by editing your profile in the UserCP. Since it is visible on ALL your posts, the following policy must be adhered to:

Signature Composition
Font size limit: No larger than size 2 (This policy is a size 2)
Style: Bold and italics are permissible
Character limit: No more than 500 total characters
Lines: No more than 4 lines
Colors: Most colors are permissible, but those which are hard to discern against the gray background (yellow, white, pale gray) should be avoided
Images/Graphics: Allowed, but nothing larger than 20k and Content rules must be followed

Signature Content
No advertising is permitted
Nothing political or religious
Nothing obscene, vulgar, defamatory or derogatory
Links to personal blogs/websites are permissible - with the webmaster's written consent
A Link to your Baseball Fever Blog does not require written consent and is recommended
Quotes must be attributed. Non-baseball quotes are permissible as long as they are not religious or political

Please adhere to these rules when you create your signature. Failure to do so will result in a request to comply by a moderator. If you do not comply within a reasonable amount of time, the signature will be removed and / or edited by an Administrator. Baseball Fever reserves the right to edit and / or remove any or all of your signature line at any time without contacting the account holder.

VII. Appropriate and inappropriate topics for Baseball Fever:

Most concisely, the test for whether a post is appropriate for Baseball Fever is: "Does this message discuss our national pastime in an interesting manner?" This post can be direct or indirect: posing a question, asking for assistance, providing raw data or citations, or discussing and constructively critiquing existing posts. In general, a broad interpretation of "baseball related" is used.

Baseball Fever is not a promotional environment. Advertising of products, web sites, etc., whether for profit or not-for-profit, is not permitted. At the webmaster's discretion, brief one-time announcements for products or services of legitimate baseball interest and usefulness may be allowed. If advertising is posted to the site it will be copied by a moderator and/or administrator, deleted from the site, then sent to the member who made the post via a Private Message (PM) along with a single warning. Members who choose to not listen and continue advertising will be banned from the site. If the advertising is spam-related, pornography-based, or a "visit-my-site" type post / private message, no warning at all will be provided, and the member will be banned immediately without a warning.

It is considered appropriate to post a URL to a page which specifically and directly answers a question posted on the list (for example, it would be permissible to post a link to a page containing home-road splits, even on a site which has advertising or other commercial content; however, it would not be appropriate to post the URL of the main page of the site). The site reserves the right to limit the frequency of such announcements by any individual or group.

In keeping with our test for a proper topic, posting to Baseball Fever should be treated as if you truly do care. This includes posting information that is, to the best of your knowledge, complete and accurate at the time you post. Any errors or ambiguities you catch later should be acknowledged and corrected in the thread, since Baseball Fever is sometimes considered to be a valuable reference for research information.

VIII. Role of the moderator:

When a post is submitted to Baseball Fever, it is forwarded by the server automatically and seen immediately. The moderator may:
a. Leave the thread exactly like it was submitted. This is the case 95% of the time.

b. Immediately delete the thread as inappropriate for Baseball Fever. Examples include advertising, personal attacks, or spam. This is the case 1% of the time.

c. Move the thread. If a member makes a post about the Marlins in the Yankees forum it will be moved to the appropriate forum. This is the case 3% of the time.

d. Edit the message due to an inappropriate item. This is the case 1% of the time. There have been new users who will make a wonderful post, then add to their signature line (where your name / handle appears) a tagline that is a pure advertisement. This tagline will be removed, a note will be left in the message so he/she is aware of the edit, and personal contact will be made to the poster telling them what has been edited and what actions need to be taken to prevent further edits.

The moderators perform no checks on posts to verify factual or logical accuracy. While he/she may point out gross errors in factual data in replies to the thread, the moderator does not act as an "accuracy" editor. Also moderation is not a vehicle for censorship of individuals and/or opinions, and the moderator's decisions should not be taken personally.

IX. Legal aspects of participation in Baseball Fever:

By submitting a post to Baseball Fever, you grant Baseball Fever permission to distribute your message to the forum. Other rights pertaining to the post remain with the ORIGINAL author, and you may not redistribute or retransmit any posts by any others, in whole or in part, without the express consent of the original author.

The messages appearing on Baseball Fever contain the opinions and views of their respective authors and are not necessarily those of Baseball Fever, or of the Baseball Almanac family of sites.

Sincerely,

Sean Holtz, Webmaster of Baseball Almanac & Baseball Fever

      • The contributor section

        One thing I need to tell those who are familiar with the player comments is that the contributor comments are far less oriented toward judging the quality of the candidate and more toward describing what the individual did. I have some objective measures for GMs and managers, which appear in the musings thread so I am more apt to serve as a judge in those cases. However, for other candidates, there are few if any objective measures, and that limits the persuasiveness of anything I might have to say. I may occasionally raise or borrow an argument for or against the candidate, though.

        The organization of the posts is similar, though owing to the brevity of many comments, I may eventually wind up with two or three contributors covered in a single post

        • I’ve come up with a new way to rate how successful managers were, which only throws out a consideration of winning percentage for guys with less than 1000 games managed. It does pretty well, and it’s based on levels of achievement which are both logically connected to excellence in the field and at which the vast majority meeting the standard are in the Hall. There’s nine standards to work from:

          1) 3600 games managed 14 men have done this, only Gene Mauch is not in the Hall;

          2) 1800 wins: 16 men have done this, and only Mauch and Lou Piniella aren’t in;

          3) .570 winning percentage, minimum 1000 games: 14 have done this, only Jim Mutrie isn’t in;

          4) 250 more wins than losses: 21 have done this and only Davey Johnson isn’t in;

          5) Wins times winning percentage >= 900: 17 have done this, and only Mauch and Piniella aren’t in;

          6) Manager’s Fibonacci points, which are categories 4 and 5 added together >=1000: 22 have done this, and only Dusty Baker, Davey Johnson and Piniella aren’t in;

          7) 7 playoff appearances: 15 have done this, and only Jim Leyland, Baker and Piniella aren’t in;

          8) 4 pennants won: 24 have done this, and only newly added Bruce Bochy isn’t in;

          9) 3 World Championships won: 12 have done this, and again only the newly Bochy isn’t in.

          The scoring is rather easy. The winning percentage score is zero for folks under 1000 games managed, and otherwise it’s 100 times (0.1 plus 13 times the winning percentage minus .500) if the wiinning percentage is equal to or over .500, and the only difference if it's below .500 is there's no 0.1 inside the parentheses. The idea is that .500 is worth a little (10 pomts tp be exact), the standard of 570 is basically 100 points, and below .500 is a negative score. . The rest are 100 times the manager’s mark divided by the standard. Then add the scores up to get a total
          We’ll review the results in the next post.

          The last three categories are the ones in which a manager's score can most rapidly rise. The HOF has, with good reason, loved guys who did well in terms of those achievements, and so will this rating system.

          The gray area is between 600 and 700 points. Above that, you definitely belong. Below it, you need some other reason or argument to be included. Also, please note that some of the guys listed as HOF are in because of their play, or work as a GM (Branch Rickey).

          One caution is a guy can lose a little ground here, as Mack most certainly did after the second dynasty was disbanded. Mack would have scored at 1310 at the end of 1933, his last winning season before 1947 when he was 84 and the team may well have been being run more by his lieutenants than him. So he lost 91 points in those last 17 seasons.

          I did make sure that the early guys had at least as many playoff appearances as pennants. With that in mind, here are the results:

          -100	Buddy Bell
          -146	Jimmie Wilson
          One thing to note is that the standard is 70 points in each category to make it in. If you fall below that, you've got to make it up somewhere else.

          The numbers for about 70 points in a category are 2520 games, 1260 wins, 175 wins minus losses, 700 Fibonacci points, 630 wins times win percentage, about a .545 winning percentage, 5 playoff appearances, 3 pennants, and 2 world championships.

          Mutrie's problem is managing only 9 seasons, and Mauch's is all wrapped up in his .483 winning percentage. He only gets 13 points in the winning percentage category, and he's minus 135 in wins minus losses for a -54 score. Those two categories come in at -41, and, while one can argue why he got those results, the system is set up to get positive scores. Mauch also was only in the playoffs twice and didn't win a pennant or world series. That means five categories yield him a minus 12 or so. He obviously does well in the other four, but the system says it isn't enough, and that's what the voters have said

          Interestingly, several of the top guys on the outside by this system have only won one pennant--Piniella, Baker, Scioscia and Davey Johnson. If that persists, the system might be improved by some adjustment to recognize this. The only guy I see in the Hall with less than 100 points from the playoff, pennant and championship categories is Al Lopez.

            Key:
            1st = First year as GM
            Last = Last (or most recent) year as GM
            Yrs = Number of years as GM
            G = Games
            W = Wins
            L = Losses
            T = Ties
            Pct = Winning percentage
            PS = Postseason appearances
            Pen = Pennants (for 1994, I count the Yankees and Expos as pennant winners)
            WS = World Series wins

            There are some .5's in there because some teams had two "Co-GMs" for one or more seasons. I split the totals for G, W, L, T, PS, Pen, and WS evenly between the Co-GMs for each of those seasons.
            Using this data, but making the change that there is no pennant winner for 1994 (Nerdlinger credited the Yankees and Expos), but including the teams that would have made the playoffs on the day the season actually ended, I came up with the following:

            I used the same nine statistical measures as I did for managers. The standards were based on numbers near the top 10 in GM history as compiled by Nerdlinger, who I strongly encourage to see if he can sell his data to or at least get one of the online baseball reference sites to post. Those standards are:

            1) 4000 games directed as GM;

            2) 2000 wins by teams under his direction as GM;

            3) a .550 won lost percentage by teams under his direction as GM (minimum 1000 games);

            4) 250 more wins than losses by the teams under his direction as GM;

            5) a wins times winning percentage of teams under his direction as GM of 1000;

            6) a GM Fibonacci number (which is category 4 plus category 5) of 1100;

            7) 7 playoff appearances by teams directed by him as GM;

            8) 4 pennants won by teams directed by him as GM; and

            9) 3 world championships won by teams directed by him as GM.

            As in the manager evaluation in this thread, the score is 100 times the result in the category the GMs teams have accomplished divided by the standard set out above. So, if a guy wins 3 pennants and 2 world championships, that's 100 times 3 divided by 4 for the pennants, or 75 points, and 100 times 2 divided by three or 67 points for that category. He'd have 142 points in those two categories. The winning percentage score is zero for folks under 1000 games managed, and otherwise it’s 100 times (0.1 plus 18 times the winning percentage minus .500) if the wiinning percentage is equal to or over .500, and the only difference if it's below .500 is there's no 0.1 inside the parentheses. The idea is that .500 is worth a little (10 pomts tp be exact), the standard of 550 is 100 points, and below .500 is a negative score. .

            I'd draw a line somewhere between call 800 to 900 points the gray area. The 10th place guy is Al Campanis, who has his public comments on the qualifications of minorities to serve as GMs to sink his case. It's easier to explain that phenomenon if he's a gray area candidate as opposed to one clearly over the bar.Next is Brian Sabean at 870+ points, not far from the top of the gray area. I think that with his teams meeting all the playoff and championship standards, Sabean should get in when his time comes. The results for all guys who have been a GM for at least 1000 games:

            Barrow, Weiss, Rickey and Gillick are all in the HOF. Scheurholz, Cashman and Sabean are either active or fairly recent for HOF induction as an executive. That leaves Bavasi, Daulton and Howsam of our top 10, and we'll look at each shortly. Billy Beane hasn't had the playoff success, which definitely hurts his placement. If we inducted the top 10, we'd have all the GMs who met the pennant and/or world championship standards except Finley and Campanis. Campanis would struggle even without his infamous comment on African Americans in management, but with it, he'll get in when Satan decides he needs ice skating lessons because the freeze in his home is permanent. Finley has his own baggage from battling his own team in his dual role as GM and owner.

                    • Abe, Iso

                      This comes from the Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame (English version, with some editing by me)

                      Father of university baseball (Waseda U.)

                      Inducted Japanese Baseball Hall of Fame1959
                      Category Elected by the Special Committee

                      This professor formed Waseda U. Nine in 1901. Their American tour in 1905 helped develop baseball in Japan. Organized the Tokyo Big Six League (TBSL), becoming its first president in 1925. Known as father of university baseball in Japan.
                      From Fitts and Engels' Japanese Baseball Superstars, p. 113:

                      Abe established Waseda University's baseball's team and is known [ed. : in Japan] as "The Father of University Baseball". .... While in the United States, he fell in love with baseball. ... Abe started teaching at Waseda University. In 1901, he established a baseball team and became its first manager. In 1905, he took his team on a tour of the United States to teach them the finer points of the game. It would be the first of many Japanese university teams to travel to America. Abe also helped promote inter-collegiate baseball [ed. : in Japan] and later became the Director of the Tokyo Big Six University League and the Chairman of the Association of University Baseball.
                      I will add that college and high school baseball were quite popular in Japan prior to the establishment of NPB in 1936 and those two sources provided much of the talent for that league.

                      • Adams, Doc

                        From http://sabr.org/latest/sabr-44-doc-a...ll-legend-2014

                        It is tempting but foolish to attempt to bestow the title “Father of Baseball” on any single individual. Dozens — if not hundreds — of pioneers could claim the title in one way or another. But one of the very first and most influential early pioneers has remained relatively unknown…….
                        Adams became a member of the famed Knickerbocker Base Ball Club in 1845, about a month after the club was formed. He was elected Vice President of the Knickerbockers in 1846 and played in the famous “first” game between clubs on June 19 at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey (other Knickerbocker games at the time were intrasquad affairs). The following year Adams was elected President of the club, a position he held for the next three years and would serve again from 1856 to 1858. In 1848, Adams led the committee to revise the rules and by- laws of the Knickerbockers.

                        As a player, Adams is credited by most baseball historians with pioneering the shortstop position in 1849 or 1850. Before teams were limited to nine players, any extra players not pitching or covering a base would play in the outfield. Adams was the first to start playing shallow to relay throws from the outfield. The balls at this time (which Adams personally produced for the Knickerbockers and other New York clubs) were soft and light and would not travel far when thrown. As balls were wound tighter and able to be thrown further, shortstops moved into the infield (with Dickey Pearce, credited by many, as the first to do so). Adams, a left-handed batter, played regularly and productively into his forties.

                        At Adams’ suggestion, the first baseball convention of ball clubs met in May 1857 to formalize set rules between clubs and ultimately leading to the formation of the National Association of Base Ball Players. Adams was elected president of the convention and was the first chairman of the Rules Committee. In his leadership positions, Doc played a crucial role in the establishment of several key aspects that make up the game of baseball, including nine players per team, the nine inning game, ninety feet between bases, and catching the ball on the fly to record an out rather than being able to catch the ball on one bounce for an out (the latter not officially gaining universal support until 1864).

During the peak of his career in the 1940s, 1950s and 1960s, Allen was arguably the most prominent member of his profession, his voice familiar to millions.

This technique drastically reduced base stealing and run scoring. He was also (possibly) the first fielder to wear a glove to protect his hand (or hands, unclear whether he wore one glove or a pair). He was also the first professional catcher.
