Yes, first ballot, one of the top legitimate 1Bmen in history behind the handful of all-time greats. That's...

        He is plainly worthy.

I'm new to the board. I have been looking
for a good baseball board and a guy on 5aTexasFootball.com
suggested this one. So here I am...hello everybody.

As far as Baggy making the hall...I say yes.
I have been an Astros fan for 20+ years and he
is truly one of the best.
However, it does aggrevate me that he is making 16mil
this year and is unable to play. But what can you do about
          that? nothing...
My beloved 'Stros are dangerously close to be the worst team
in baseball this year. Pretty sad for a club that was one game away
from the World Series last year.

Entering this year, Jeff Bagwell was tied for 30th all-time in the all important OPS+ stat (150)... and would rank 7th among HOF 1Bmen (Gehrig, Brouthers, Foxx, Greenberg, Mize, Connor).

Non HOF 1Bmen with a higher OPS+ include McGwire, Thomas, Orr, Allen, and Thome.

The 500 Player Pyramid project named Bagwell a "6", one of the top 100 players in history. Here are the firstbasemen that rank around him:

              6+ Thomas F
              6+ Mize*
              6+ McCovey*
              6 Murray*
              6 Leonard B*
              6 Bagwell
              6 Killebrew*
              5 Sisler*
              5 McGwire
              5 Palmeiro
              5 Connor*
              5- Suttles

              Pretty good company, I'd say.

I honestly can't fathom what a legitimate argument against him could be at this point.

Well five people have voted no.

Their votes can be broken down as such.

Voter #1 - Hates the Astros so he would never vote for a Houston player

Voter #2 - Hit the no button by mistake

Voter #3 - Was Voter #1's brother and hates Houston too

Voter #4 - Hates baseball and just comes to the BBF to mess up all the polls

Voter #5 - Is a Yankees fan and his thinking is if Giambi can not be in then neither can anyone else

I doubt that, but there are people who reside here, who believe the HOF should be limited to roughly 50 members, and vote accordingly. In such a case I don't think Bagwell makes it if he were to retire today.

I agree with Freakshow and the Pyramid voters however in that Bagwell falls somewhere between #s 51-100.

--And since the Hall now exceeds 200 there is no way he doesn't belong. Whatever a person's preferences on HoF standards, players need to be evaluated on the standards that actually exist.

Probably one of the five greatest first baseman ever to play- and even better than his heavy hitting, lead footed contemporary born the same year (and day)- Frank Thomas.

Beyond the statisitcs, Bagwell has been regarded as one of the best baserunners of his era, as well- unfortunately that skill/value is only partially represented in the encyclopedia. He seems to be a truly complete baseball player, which is extremely rare.
