better player
I made this poll because many consider Manny Ramirez the Jimmie Foxx of this generation
btw I was going to do Manny Vs Gehrig because of the grand slams but its probably not even close
some redsox fans on their fan forum said Manny was better than Lou and I think thats ludacris"I was pitching one day when my glasses clouded up on me. I took them off to polish them. It's hard to compare a 1B to an outfielder. They are a lot closer than most would think. Foxx has an adavantage because he started so young, debuted at age 17. Manny was 21 when he debuted. Foxx, like Griffey Jr, was a monster player in his 20s. But like Griffey Jr, he completely fell off in his 30s. Fox was just 32 years old when he hit his 500th HR. Manny is 33 years old now. After age 33 Foxx hit just 15 HRs. Obviously Manny will hit many more HRs than that. As of today, I'd still go with Foxx. He leads in OPS+ slightly, 163 to 156.Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

Foxx is an all-timer, one of the 25 best non-pitchers who ever lived. Manny is a borderline HoFer if he retired today. To even be mentioned in the same sentence with Foxx, Manny would have to increase his production to an even higher level, and put up about three MVP quality years.

Foxx is a lot like Griffey. Read Foxx's bio sometime. That man went through a lot of injuries and pain and suffering that I don't know how he even lasted that long. Had a major sinus problem from the beginning (which gave him nosebleeds a lot in the 30s). Of course, getting beaned in the head didn't help either when he was 27?? I think. Then the alcohol problem on top of that. With today's technology on medicine and surgeries, they could've helped him out back then and he probably would've increase his production, (if that's possible).
I gotta with Foxx too here on this poll.Last edited by Bill Burgess; 07-15-2005, 01:07 PM."Back before I injured my hip, I thought going to the gym was for wimps."

Actually, I think they were about the same because I lettered in all sports, and I was a two-time state decathlon champion.

My sophomore year I placed 2nd, and my junior and senior year - I got smart and piled up enough points between myself and second place where I didn't have to run the mile.

As a yankees fan my stomach always turns when I see Manny at the plate, easily a HOFer. I just wish we had picked up his contract rather than signed Sheffield when Theo put him on waivers a few seasons ago

Yes, I know all about Ramirez's stats. How about this for a stat:
MVP AWARDS
Foxx: 3
Ramirez: 0
Foxx dominated his era, and is the #2 all-time first baseman. Manny has never been the best player in the game, though he has consistently been in the top 10. I don't know whether he counts as a LF or RF, but he's not in either top 10.
Foxx and Ramirez both played in hitter's eras, and they both played part of their careers in Fenway Park, so let's directly compare their best BoSox seasons.
Foxx 1938: .349, 50 HR, 175 RBI, 139 R, 33 2B, 119 BB, 76 K
Ramirez 2004: .308, 43 HR, 130 RBI, 108 R, 44 2B, 82 BB, 124 K
Plus Foxx was much better defensively. That about says it all. Ramirez is a tremendous hitter, but he's not in the same league as Foxx.

would a Ramirez vs Dimaggio matchup be better
not as players but as hitters?"I was pitching one day when my glasses clouded up on me. I took them off to polish them. When I looked up to the plate, I saw Jimmie Foxx. The sight of him terrified me so much that I haven't been able to wear glasses since." - Left Gomez

And don't forget. When Jimmy Foxx was competing for his league leads, he was going up against Ruth, Gehrig, Greenberg, Simmons, Gehringer, Cochrane, DiMaggio, Tony Lazerri, Bob Meusel, Leon "Goose" Goslin, Heinie Manush, etc.Last edited by Bill Burgess; 07-15-2005, 01:23 PM.

While I certainly agree that Foxx was better than Manny, I'm not sure this particular point is valid. Do you honestly believe that Manny has it easier in the competition department, what with so many of his competitors likely using chemical assistance?
This really isn't a fair comparison for Manny, though. he's going to look bad compared to Foxx. Maybe Hank Greenberg instead?
