all time all star A team:

                    C - Berra, Gibson
                    1B - Gehrig
                    2B - Collins, Hornsby
                    SS - Wagner
                    3B - Schmidt
                    SS/3B - Alex Rodriguez
                    LF - Williams / Bonds
                    CF - Ways / Charleston / Speaker
                    RF - Ruth
                    OF/1B - Musial
P - Johnson, Young, Alexander, Grove, Paige, Mathewson, Clemens, Maddux, Seaver, Rivera

                    B TEAM

                    C - Bench, Cochrane
                    1B - Foxx, Pujols
                    2B - Morgan, Lajoie
                    SS - Vaughan, Ripken
                    3B - Mathews
                    LF - Henderson
                    CF - Cobb, Mantle, DiMaggio
                    RF - Aaron, Ott
P - Nichols, Spahn, Feller, Gibson, R. Johnson, Pedro, Hubbell, Koufax, S.J. Williams, Eckersley

Since this is a team rather than just the next 25 best players, I chose Cochrane over Piazza to get a LH bat who can catch, and Ott over Frank Robinson for the same reason, since the starting RFer is a RH hitter. Toughest cuts were Brett, Frank Robinson, Piazza and Delahanty.

Here's my 19th Century team. I gave more weight to players who played a bigger part of their career before 1900 than to guys who played a long time after that (like Dahlen and Keeler).

                    C - D. White, Ewing
                    1B - Brouthers, Connor, Anson
                    2B - Barnes, Childs
                    SS - Wright, Jennings
                    3B - G. Davis
                    LF - Delahanty, Burkett, Stovey
                    CF - Hamilton, Browning
                    RF - K. Kelly, Thompson
P - Young, Nichols, Rusie, Keefe, Radbourn, Clarkson, Caruthers, Ward

With these guys 8 pitchers is plenty. G. Davis played more 3B than SS before 1900, and there's plenmty of guys here who were regular 3Bman at times (White, Anson, Ewing, Browning) to back him up. Anson is the third catcher if needed.

                          TOP TEN AT EACH POSITION
For this I'll exclude Negro Leaguers, just because I don't know that many off the top of my head and will probably forget deserving guys.

Catcher: Berra, Bench, Piazza, Campanella, Fisk, Cochrane, Dickey, IRodriguez, Hartnett, GCarter

First Base: Gehrig, Foxx, Mize, Anson, Killebrew, Pujols, Greenberg, McCovey, Bagwell, Thomas

Second Base: Hornsby, Collins, Morgan, Lajoie, JRobinson, Sandberg, Gehringer, Carew, Biggio

Shortstop: HWagner, ARodriguez, AVaughan, Ripken Jr., Yount, Banks, Cronin, Larkin, Trammell, Smith

Third Base: Schmidt, GBrett, EMathews, Boggs, Baker, Santo, Molitor, BRobinson, Hack, DEvans

Left Field: BaBonds, TWilliams, Musial, RHenderson, Yastrzemski, JJackson, Simmons, Raines, Minoso, Stargell

Center Field: Mays, Cobb, Mantle, DiMaggio, Speaker, Griffey Jr., Snider, Puckett, Hamilton, Doby

Right Field: Ruth, HAaron, FRobinson, Ott, Rose, Gwynn, RClemente, RJackson, Kaline, SCrawford

                          MOST COMMITTED OPINIONS
                          1. Had Oscar Charleston played "white" baseball, he'd be considered better than Willie Mays.

                          2. Rickey Henderson is the greatest leadoff hitter and base stealer in the history of baseball.

                          3. Ron Santo and Tim Raines should be in the Hall of Fame, and Pete Rose and Joe Jackson should also be elgible for election.

                          4. Honus Wagner was a better defensive shortstop than Ozzie Smith or anyone else, and he is by far the best in history at his position.

                          5. Babe Ruth is the greatest baseball player, and Walter Johnson is the greatest pitcher.

                          6. Nolan Ryan is not a top ten pitcher.

                          7. James "Cool Papa" Bell was faster than anybody who's ever played baseball. He may not have been the best basestealer, but he was the fastest.

                          8. Mariano Rivera is the best, and most intimidating relief pitcher in history.

                          9. Players such as Dan Bankhead and Larry Doby should also be honored on Jackie Robinson day.

                          10. The greatest teams don’t necessarily have to have the most talent.

This is Joe Garrison's Page... Live from Williamsport PA

I will add to this every so often and I thank you for the space.

Before I begin, I like to look at the "best" players as part of a timeline. I have high regards for players who were the best at their position in their league when they played. If you had that guy, you had an advantage over your opponent. While I am not about to put Dave Concepcion in the Hall of Fame just because he was the best National League shortstop of the 1970s (pre-Ozzie), I think that says a lot and he should be included in some of these lists. So check out my Era-by-Era list near the bottom of this post. It means more to me than even the first two lists below:

                            My All-Time All-Star teams, A & B... Non-Pitchers

Catcher: Johnny Bench and Yogi Berra
First Base: Lou Gehrig and Jimmie Foxx
Second Base: Rogers Hornsby and Eddie Collins/Joe Morgan
Third Base: Mike Schmidt and Chipper Jones/George Brett
Shortstop: Honus Wagner and Alex Rodriguez
Left Field: Ted Williams and Barry Bonds
Center Fielder: Ty Cobb and Willie Mays
Right Fielder: Babe Ruth and Hank Aaron
Designated Hitter (or extra hitter not named above, whatever): Stan Musial, Mickey Mantle
Best Real Designated Hitters: Frank Thomas and Paul Molitor

Hitters most likely found on the teams of other posters:

Catcher: Josh Gibson or Mickey Cochrane or Mike Piazza
First Base: Albert Pujols or Hank Greenberg
Second Base: Joe Morgan or Jackie Robinson or Rod Carew
Third Base: Eddie Mathews or George Brett or Brooks Robinson
Shortstop: Derek Jeter or Cal Ripken Jr. or Arky Vaughan
Outfielders/DH: Rickey Henderson, Manny Ramirez, Carl Yastrzemski,
Joe Jackson, Ken Griffey Jr., Joe DiMaggio, Tris Speaker, Duke Snider,
Frank Robinson, Mel Ott, Roberto Clemente, Rafael Palmeiro, and David Ortiz

                            My All-Time Defensive All-Star Team
I am only going with guys who I saw play:

Catcher: Tony Pena (a young Tony Pena) or I-Rod if you want career value
First Base: Keith Hernandez...... Second Base: Manny Trillo
Third Base: Graig Nettles......... Shortstop: Ozzie Smith
Left Field: None, so list Jim Edmonds here, he was so good, he could have shifted over with no trouble at all
Center Field: Garry Maddox (or Junior Griffey, really)...... Right Field: Ichiro...... Pitcher: Greg Maddux

My thoughts on making a list of the greatest Negro League players:

-- Any attempt at this would be foolish and a waste of time on my part. All I know is what I read and I don't trust any of the stats. If I were to list twenty or thirty, they would be the same 20 or 30 who have been written about time and again and those either elected to the HOF or ranked by the famous writers players and managers. Independent analysis is impossible, so my opinion has no value.

My Roster of Greatest Pre-1900 Players:
Catchers: Buck Ewing, Pop Snyder, Charlie Bennett, Jack Clements, Chief Zimmer, Deacon McGuire,
Wilbert Robinson, Jack O'Connor, Duke Farrell, Deacon White, Heinie Peitz, Pop Schriver, Ed McFarland
First Basemen: Cap Anson, Dan Brouthers, Roger Connor, Joe Start, Jake Beckley,
Fred Tenney, Dave Orr, Henry Larkin, Jack Doyle, Tommy Tucker, Candy LaChance
Second Basemen: Bid McPhee, Ross Barnes, Cupid Childs,
Hardy Richardson, Bobby Lowe, Tom Daly
Third Basemen: Lave Cross, Ned Williamson, Ezra Sutton, Arlie Latham,
John McGraw, Billy Nash, Denny Lyons, Jerry Denny, Bill Joyce
Shortstops: Herman Long, Hughie Jennings, Jack Glasscock, George Davis,
Tommy Corcoran, Bill Dahlen, Ed McKean
LF: Harry Stovey, Ed Delahanty, Jesse Burkett, Jim O'Rourke,
Tip O'Neill, Abner Dalrymple, Elmer Smith, Joe Kelley
CF: Jimmie McAleer, Bill Lange, George Gore, Jimmy Ryan, Harry Wright,
Paul Hines, Lip Pike, Tom Brown, George Van Haltren, Dummy Hoy, Billy Hamilton,
Hugh Duffy, Ollie Pickering, Curt Welch, Dickey Johnson, Pete Browning, Mike Griffin
RF: Willie Keeler, Jimmy Fogarty, Sam Thompson, Mike Tiernan,
Oyster Burns, Mike King Kelly, Patsy Donovan

Pitchers: Tim Keefe, John "Monte" Ward, Bob Caruthers, John Clarkson, Jim "Pud" Galvin, Mickey Welch, Sadie McMahon, Jim McCormick, Charlie "Old Hoss" Radbourne, Amos Rusie, Jim Whitney, Larry Corcoran, Clark Griffith, Al Spalding, Cy Young, Kid Nichols, Charlie Ferguson, Tony Mullane, Silver King, Bobby Mathews, Tommy Bond, Jim Creighton, Gus Weyhing, Jack Stivetts, Will White, Ted Breitenstein, Adonis Terry, Will White, Charlie Buffington, Bill Hutchison, Guy Hecker, Terry Larkin, George Bradley, Fred Goldsmith, Ed Morris, Dave Foutz, Toad Ramsey, Jim Devlin, Matt Kilroy, Ben Sanders, Elton Chamberlain.

Keeping with the spirit of a 40 man roster (plus Cap Anson to run the team) and avoiding some players who had careers which spilled over into the 20th Century to a large degree like Larry Lajoie or even a Lave Cross. I have no rule or cutoff for this, so my squad may not be consistent from player to player on the cutoff. (and I am aware some of these players played more than one position, and some even caught a game or two). I will try to keep it at three or four players around each infield position. I know the best outfielder I leave off proably could out-hit the infielder listed, but here is my list anyway without looking up tooooo many stats:

                            Catchers:.................First Basemen.......Second Basemen.......Third Basemen.......Shortstop....................

My Favorite Team (five year run):

The 1977-1981 Los Angeles Dodgers, those were the guys I rooted for as a young fan. If I were to enter some sort of Sim or Stat Tournament and could take any five year run by any franchise, I would take them, the heroes of my youth. This is not to say they could beat the Yankees of 1935-1939, the Tinker to Evers to Chance Cubs or the A's with their 100,000 Infield.... this is just a favorite team. I know they aren't the best ever, but every young fan has his first set of heroes, and I would take these 30 guys in a sim league and just be happy pretending they were together again. Or in this case, had the chance to play together as Fernando of course arrived after Sutton and John were gone. I will allow myself three cheats: Buckner, Marshall and Wynn from the 1974 team.

C- Steve Yeager, Mike Scioscia, Joe Ferguson
1B- Steve Garvey and Bill Buckner
2B- Davey Lopes and Steve Sax
3B- Ron Cey and Pedro Guerrero
SS- Bill Russell and Derrel Thomas?
LF- Dusty Baker and Lee Lacy
CF- Rick Monday and Jimmy Wynn
RF- Reggie Smith and Manny Mota (just to Pinch Hit)

It kills me to leave the likes of Rudy Law, Bill North, and Vic Davalillo off this squad, but if Garry Thomasson cannot make it...

Starting Pitchers- Don Sutton, Tommy John, Burt Hooton, Fernando Valenzuela, Bob Welch, Dave Stewart, Jerry Reuss, Rick Rhoden, Doug Rau and Andy Messersmith would be another cheat, but what does he have to to do with Valenzuela and Reuss? Eh...

Bullpen- Anyone but Tom "Need-a-Cure" and only Steve Howe if he is clean and sober. Charlie Hough works here and Mike Marshall and Terry Forster are decent closers.

Side Note: What makes this team interesting is the possibility of getting the type of pitchers Bob Welch and Dave Stewart became with the A's after they left the Dodgers. How much better does the staff look then? Does it go from good to great? Can I cheat and trade in the 1979-1981 Rick Sutcliffe for the 1984 version? And then put him in the bullpen? Elias Sosa yes, Don Stanhouse no..

That's a lot of hocus pocus on my part. But at least I did not put in Orel Hershiser...

                            My Most Committed Opinions:

-- The best Base Ball in the World is played right here in Williamsport PA every August, and admission is free.

-- It's impossible to tell for sure if Roger Clemens was better than Walter Johnson. Even the highest level of certainty found after careful analysis is still just a guess when comparing players who played that far apart in a game which has evolved over time.

-- It's not opinion that Rickey Henderson was the greatest leadoff hitter of all time. If you define Leadoff Hitter the way most do, the opinion becomes fact

-- Keith Hernandez and Don Mattingly are overrated by almost everyone

-- There are probably fifty guys in the Hall of Fame who don't really belong, but it's silly to whine about it

-- Fred Lynn would have made a great Dodger. There was talk of him joining the OTHER southern California team when he left Boston.... (sigh) what might have been. The 1981-1982 Dodgers would have been something else if Lynn was in Center Field.

-- High RBI guys who were not afraid to swing the bat get a bad rap on the historical timeline

-- Playing every day has value. If you are the starter and you don't play, the stats from your position suddenly come from the likes of players like Ed Goodsen or Ted Martinez or Mickey Hatcher.

-- I have no problem with retired players waiting years to be enshrined into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Gradual increases in the number of "yes" votes is the price we pay to allow for the idea of a First Ballot Guy. Making others wait gives an Inner Circle feel to those who aren't forced to wait ( and wonder ).

-- Let the Steroids guys into the Hall if they can get the votes. If we want to remember this era, and keep people talking about the evils of it all, what better than plaques in a museum. People are smart enough to sort Palmeiro from Perez. Fans should be given a little more credit in this regard. And banning the PED users is tough to do if they did not break any rules on the books at the time of their enhancement.

-- Reggie Jackson cheated when he stuck his hip out on that double play attempt in the World Series, and the umpires did not call it. I will never get over that, much like the old timers are still hoping Branca does not throw that pitch to Thompson.

-- I really don't see the point of putting Joe Jackson in the Hall of Fame. The face that he is NOT in the Hall is what keeps his memory alive. And from what I have read, he had guilty knowledge of what was going on.

-- If I had a vote, I would not vote Pete Rose into the Hall of Fame. However I would not throw a fit if he made it in after his death. That's bitter of me to say, but there is something to be said of putting him in, but not letting him enjoy the moment.

-- If someone were to ever show me that he bet the Reds to lose, then caused them to lose, then he deserves all the pain he has endured up to now, and even more in the future with the HOF out of the question.

-- Almost everyone in baseball is average, and almost all the value every player lies right there, in being nearly average.

-- Post season numbers should count when you make your little rankings and evaluations. What games mean more?

-- There is no such thing as clutch hitting, but it is possible to be a choker.

Era by Era Greatest of All Time

Here is the makings of that all time greats list I wrote about up top. My eras are very different than what others use. I don't use round decades, and I provide some overlap between eras. I tend to shun a most stats before 1893 due to the pitching distance. These "teams" will have a Big Hall of Fame feel and that's my intention. Each player will appear on only one "team". Each team will have the look of a non-traditional fifty man roster. That is very important to me. Some players will be placed on a team so as to provide room for another guy somewhere else. That is important to me too and may drive some of you crazy as you may be looking for more consistency in the placement. Example: Jimmy Collins could be placed either on the first team or the second team as half of his career could be placed in either of my first two eras. I put him in the second era as I felt the second team could use the help over there at third a little more than the first era. It's my list, and there will be plenty of decisions like that one in the coming days. You might also see an attempt to have an even number of players at each position on each team. That would allow a split squad scrimmage to happen on a tabletop board game.
(Do you see now where I am going with this?)

My era by era teams (huge work in progress):

                            1889-1903

                            1901-1912

                            1910-1921

                            1919-1930

                            1928-1939

                            1937-1948

                            1946-1957

                            1955-1966

                            1964-1975

                            1973-1984

                            1982-1993

                            1991-2002

                            2000-2011

                            Again, more later...

Garvey, Lopes, Russell, and Cey started 833 times and the Dodgers went 498-335, for a .598 winning percentage. That’s equal to a team going 97-65 over a season. On those occasions when at least one of them missed his start, the Dodgers were 306-267-1, which is a .534 clip. That works out to a team going 87-75. So having all four of them added 10 wins to the Dodgers per year.

New committed opinion - I was REALLY ignorant before. Hopefully 5 years from now I'll look back and think I'm ignorant now (just not as much).

These will be based mostly on stats, without worrying about steroids, or if they were in a better or worse era/ballpark/team/etc. I don't have any NeL players, or anything pre-1900, because I don't know enough about them.
My list still won't factor steroids, but era/ballpark/team/etc will be a factor. Still no NeL or pre-1900, but if a significant portion of their careers were in MLB post 1900, I give some amount of credit for those other years.

                              ==================

My ideal 25 would obviously be a combination of the two teams

                              1B Lou Gehrig
                              2B Rogers Hornsby
                              SS Honus Wagner
                              3B Mike Schmidt
                              CA Johnny Bench
                              LF Barry Bonds
                              CF Ty Cobb
                              RF Babe Ruth
                              DH Ted Williams

BN Mickey Cochrane - gives me a platoon for Bench
BN Alex Rodriguez - Someone I can bring in at SS gives me almost unlimited flexibility, since Honus could play almost everywhere
BN Willie Mays - platoons with Cobb. Cobb also gives my other OFers a day off.
BN Chipper Jones - gives me a platoon for Schmidt. Since he is much worse defensively, I'll make sure to have Honus playing SS instead of A-Rod when I face LHSP.

The DH is a good thing.

Many people vastly overrate some players because of longevity.

                                Top 100 Players
                                1. Ruth, Babe – New York Yankees: Excelled at all facets of the game and in every and any big situation. The pitching separates him from...
                                2. Bonds, Barry – San Francisco Giants: The historic offensive production and 7 MVP's overcome the serious intangible issues.
                                3. Cobb, Ty – Detroit Tigers: Too great of a hitter to rank lower. Easily the greatest contact hitter of all time in my opinion. An absolute offensive force. Solid manager.
                                4. Mays, Willie – San Francisco Giants: Phenomenal all-around player.
                                5. Wagner, Honus – Pittsburgh Pirates: One of the greatest defenders ever in terms of ability and versatility. Built like a horse. Most powerful hitter the first 20 years of the 20th c.
                                6. Aaron, Henry – Milwaukee Braves: Not a hole in his game or personality/qualities as a teammate.
                                7. Rodriguez, Alex – New York Yankees: Incredible offensive numbers for a GG caliber SS. 2015 was very impressive. He really led that club to the playoffs. I honestly felt like I was watching a legend put up one last hurrah to prove he still had it.
                                8. Griffey Jr., Ken – Seattle Mariners: Should have stretched in his 20's. Closest thing to Mays. Not as fast or agile though.
                                9. Charleston, Oscar – Pittsburgh Crawfords: Moved to first base at 30. Cobb-like competitor. One of the Negro Leagues best managers, let alone player/managers, he won 4 pennants. Hit well into his mid-40's.
                                10. Anson, Cap – Chicago White Stockings: Hit through a myriad of rule changes to benefit pitchers: http://www.baseball-almanac.com/rulechng.shtml (hit .331 at age 44).
                                11. Hornsby, Rogers – St. Louis Cardinals: The 7 percentage triple crowns are unreal. Not a great defender but I think the tales of his ineptitude and attitude are far overstated (ahem, Bill James).
                                12. Williams, Ted – Boston Red Sox: Could be top ten on hitting alone. Too bad he didn't practice defense much if ever.
                                13. Pujols, Albert – St. Louis Cardinals: Elite consistent for 10+ seasons. Defensive versatility early. GG first baseman. Never a mental lapse. Leads by example.
                                14. Bench, Johnny – Cincinnati Reds: Great athlete period. Closest thing to a 5 tool catcher.
                                15. Lloyd, John Henry – Lincoln Giants: Not quite as much bat as Wagner. Has a case for being the #1 Ne.L. player. Charleston, he and Gibson have pretty much always been the consenus top 3 Ne.L. players.
                                16. Speaker, Tris – Cleveland Indians: Couldn't play that shallow in any other era but he was doing things other guys weren't at that depth. No holes in his game and a successful manager.
                                17. DiMaggio, Joe – New York Yankees: Doesn't have the crazy longevity of some of the above. A true competitor and team leader. The definition of a consummate professional.
                                18. Gehrig, Lou – New York Yankees: In my opinion a better hitter than...
                                19. Musial, Stan – St. Louis Cardinals: Great hitter and teammate. Solid and versatile defender.
                                20. Mantle, Mickey – New York Yankees: Greatest switch hitter ever. Could beat you any way offensively when it made sense (not running too much to save the old legs). Didn't take great care of himself on top of naturally arthritic knees. Not a strong positive presence on a ball club.
                                21. Robinson, Frank – Cincinnati Reds: Was one of the top players in baseball as a 20 year old rookie. Consistent 5 tool competitor.
                                22. Henderson, Rickey – Oakland Athletics: A run personified. Great athlete. Prone to some defensive lapses. Matured as he aged.
                                23. Sosa, Sammy – Chicago Cubs: Poor intangibles. Divisive clubhouse presence. Not a team player at all. Averaged .289/49/127 from '95-03. From '98-02 he averaged .306/58/141.
                                24. McGwire, Mark – St. Louis Cardinals: Injury prone in the mid-90's. Averages per 162 from '92-99: 62 HR, 138 RBI, .284/.430/.647/187 OPS+. Too much power. Not much else.
                                25. Piazza, Mike – New York Mets: Not the best defensive catcher but his bat blows everyone out of the water.
                                26. Gibson, Josh – Homestead Grays: Tons of power and hitting from a catcher. Has some intangible issues. Most famous Ne.L. position player.
                                27. Lajoie, Nap – Cleveland Naps: Excellent second baseman. A force at the plate. A bit injury prone. An okay manager (hotheaded).
                                28. Foxx, Jimmie – Philadelphia Athletics: Probably the best athlete among the top first basemen. Didn't take good care of himself.
                                29. Ripken Jr., Cal – Baltimore Orioles: Up and down with the bat but never to the point he was hitting lower than 5th in his prime. Always there defensively and mentally. Exemplified the "Oriole way." Most durable non-catching position player ever.
                                30. Rodriguez, Pudge – Texas Rangers: Case for the best defensive catcher ever. 2844 hits, .296 average, almost 600 doubles, 311 HR's, 13 GG's, 7 SS's, 14x AS. A professional, winning, great ball player.
                                31. Brett, George – Kansas City Royals: Best all-around skill set of any third baseman. Though perhaps not the best at any one. A serious, competitive player.
                                32. Yastrzemski, Carl – Boston Red Sox: Delivered under the pressure of succeeding Teddy Ballgame. Decline wasn't as bad as it is sometimes made out to be.
                                33. Cabrera, Miguel – Detroit Tigers: Hit cleanup for the WS champion Marlins at age 20. Offensive consistency near that of Pujols.
                                34. Schmidt, Mike – Philadelphia Phillies: If he was a career .300 hitter he'd be #10.
                                35. Banks, Ernie – Chicago Cubs: Dominant offensive player in his prime at SS and productive, if unspectacular, first baseman in his 30's.
                                36. Morgan, Joe – Cincinnati Reds: Did everything and did it right. Not enough big seasons to rank higher for me.
                                37. Jeter, Derek – New York Yankees: Phenomenally consistent offensive player. Does everything right. Never a mental lapse. DiMaggio-esque leadership. Poor range keeps him a notch below Wagner, Lloyd and Ripken.
                                38. Campanella, Roy – Brooklyn Dodgers: A regular catcher for Baltimore at 17. He was mentored by HoFer Biz Mackey (http://coe.k-state.edu/annex/nlbemus...rs/mackey.html). Had up and down years with the bat as catchers will. Downright dominant at his best though as attested to by 3 MVP's.
                                39. Stargell, Willie – Pittsburgh Pirates: Forbes Field really stunted his numbers. I think he has a case to be in the high 30's. Great teammate and leader of the Pirates.
                                40. Mathews, Eddie – Milwaukee Braves: Hard nosed. Tons of HR power. Solid glove.
                                41. Thomas, Frank – Chicago White Sox: All-time great RH hitter. Poor with the glove and had a terrible arm.
                                42. Jones, Chipper – Atlanta Braves: Not a very good glove but all there offensively (career .300/.400/.500). .287/.409/.456 in 417 postseason games.
                                43. Clemente, Roberto – Pittsburgh Pirates: Really didn't hit his stride until 25. Superb defender but I think his range is overrated. Forbes Field really stunted his power numbers ala Stargell. Was showing no signs of slowing down before his death. Excellent postseason player.
                                44. Guerrero, Vladimir – Montreal Expos: Could put the bat on anything. 5 tool guy in his 20's. Could hit until the very end. Retired relatively early.
                                45. Thome, Jim – Cleveland Indians: Tons of power. Hit for some average until his mid-30's (.276 career). DH'd from age 35 on (182 HR, .265 average, 140 OPS+). Too much bat for...
                                46. Berra, Yogi – New York Yankees: 3x MVP and the leader of the 1950's Yankees. Most consistent offensive catcher, above average glove and a great baseball mind.
                                47. Rose, Pete – Cincinnati Reds: Played the game hard. Great hitter. Hard working fielder.
                                48. Suzuki, Ichiro – Seattle Mariners: Dynamic offensive player in his prime. Excellent defender with a cannon arm. 4213 hits between the majors and NPB.
                                49. Wright, George – Cincinnati Red Stockings
                                50. Bagwell, Jeff – Houston Astros: Rivals Foxx for athleticism at first base. I feel like he could rate higher.
                                51. Brouthers, Dan – Buffalo Bisons: "He was a great hitter, one of the most powerful batters of all time. ‘Big Dan’ in his prime, against the present-day pitching and the modern lively ball, would have hit as many home runs as anybody." - John J. McGraw
                                52. Gwynn, Tony – San Diego Padres: Best fully adjusted batting average ever. Team leader. Was DH material by his mid-30's but won 5 GG's before he put on weight. Studied hitting to Williams-like depths.
                                53. Hamilton, Billy – Philadelphia Phillies: One of the best base runners and leadoff men ever. Led baseball in OBP 5x (4th all-time), SB 5x (3rd all-time), runs 4x, BA twice (7th all-time) and OPS+ twice.
                                54. Robinson, Jackie – Brooklyn Dodgers: Hard nosed, dynamic player in every phase of the game.
                                55. Johnson, Home Run – Brooklyn Royal Giants: Captained his first professional team. Already known as a leader, witty player and game manager by his mid-20's. Had a reputation for always hustling, clutch HR's, a calm demeanor and never striking out. He was a submarine pitcher and was used as a long reliever and spot starter.
                                56. Sisler, George – St. Louis Browns: Productivity cut short by injuries and illness that ruined his vision. Was a phenomenal all-around offensive player. Also considered a top defensive first baseman historically.
                                57. Cochrane, Mickey – Philadelphia Athletics: Helluva hitter (good eye), defensive catcher, leader and manager. Beaning cut his career short.
                                58. Stearnes, Turkey – Detroit Stars: Similar to Trout in that early on he hit leadoff, second and middle of the order depending on the talent around him. 185 home runs in league play, 7 home run titles and a .359 league batting average. Consistently among the leaders stealing 10-15 bases in 60-80 game seasons. Played CF in his prime.
                                59. Gehringer, Charlie – Detroit Tigers: Known as the Mechanical Man due to his reliability. Could do it all on the field. Was a consummate professional.
                                60. Leonard, Buck – Homestead Grays: Well respected throughout the Ne.L.'s. Record 11x NeL all-star. Superb defender and hitter for power and average. His Grays won 9 N.N.L. pennants (2 during WWII) with him batting cleanup.
                                61. Crawford, Wahoo Sam – Detroit Tigers: 500 HR potential. Good outfielder. Smart player.
                                62. Mize, Johnny – St. Louis Cardinals: Lots of power and hit for good average though a bit inconsistent. Not much range at first. Could really pick it though. Had a knack for hitting in the clutch. Spent last 4+ seasons pinch hitting and facing a lot of right handed pitching with the Yankees.
                                63. Ramirez, Manny – Boston Red Sox: All bat here. Will quit on a team.
                                64. Ortiz, David – Boston Red Sox: One of the most clutch and best postseason performers ever. Dead weight in the field.
                                65. Murray, Eddie – Baltimore Orioles: 20 years of consistency and all-around play get him above...
                                66. Ott, Mel – New York Giants: Basically done after his age 33 season. Mentored by McGraw from young age (hit .383 in 61 PA at age 17) to be a smart ball player. Not all of his offensive production is attributable to the Polo Grounds.
                                67. Collins, Eddie – Philadelphia Athletics: Reputation as one of the greatest inside ballplayers. Leader on the field. Okay manager. Advent of the liveball halted batting decline. Low % base stealer. Behind only Cobb in terms of mastering the deadball style. Excellent bunter. Overrated defensively in my opinion.
                                68. Carew, Rod – Minnesota Twins: Lacked power and just average defensive ability at 2nd. Historically great contact hitter. Despite lack of power still has a career 131 OPS+. Stole home 7x in '69 (2nd most all-time), 4 straight A.L. batting titles (2nd all-time), 14x AS.
                                69. Ed Delahanty – Philadelphia Phillies: Big, drunk slugger in the 1890's mold. Lots of triples and IPHR's, huge rate stats, SB's and runs scored. Indifferent defender although he had all the tools. Refusal to play first base led to jump to the A.L. and then tried to jump back to the N.L. with McGraw's Giants. Became out of shape (drinking), in debt (ponies) and suicidal during the ensuing contract disputes. Career ended prematurely when he died a couple nights after an attempted intervention.
                                70. Jackson, Shoeless Joe – Chicago White Sox: Great natural hitter and all-around ball player. Black Sox scandal hurts him in terms of not knowing how he'd do in the live ball era (probably really, really well).
                                71. Greenberg, Hank – Detroit Tigers: Good shot at 500 HR's without WWII service. Big time power and RBI guy. Not a very good defensive player although he worked hard to improve at first and willingly moved to left field for Rudy York and worked to become serviceable there.
                                72. Carter, Gary – Montreal Expos: Consistently above average offensive production. Excellent, durable defensive catcher and all-around player.
                                73. Davis, George – New York Giants: Played CF and third base before moving to SS. An early effective switch hitter; he led the 1906 "hitless wonders" to a world series win at age 35.
                                74. Snider, Duke – Brooklyn Dodgers: Athletic and consistent; 1/6 players to hit 40+ HR's five straight times. Done as a regular after 30; didn't hit lefties well. Still had a 127 OPS+ in 718 games from '58-64 (age 31-37).
                                75. Kaline, Al – Detroit Tigers: 2x MVP runner up, 10 GG's, 15x AS. Lacks the big peak and the 60's make his numbers look pretty pedestrian at first glance.
                                76. Connor, Roger – New York Giants: All-time HR leader for 23 years. Giants got their nickname from him. Durable, never had an OPS+ lower than 111 from 22 to 38, all full seasons.
                                77. Fisk, Carlton – Chicago White Sox: Once held the record for games caught. Was injured here and there sometimes missing half seasons (missed half a season every 4 seasons on average). A legitimate candidate for MVP, SS, GG's and ASG's when healthy. Good power, could run a little (led AL in triples in '72 and stole 17 bags twice), hit for average every now and again. '75 WS hero. Played the game hard. A pro's pro.
                                78. Jackson, Reggie – Oakland Athletics: Highly publicized attitude problems. Phenomenal talent though. Best player on the 3x champion A's and the Bronx Zoo Yankees.
                                79. Sheffield, Gary – Florida Marlins: Reputation as a selfish player. Was very competitive though. Talent and consistency are undeniable. Had the talent to have a much better career, in my opinion.
                                80. McCovey, Willie – San Francisco Giants: No field, all hit.
                                81. Heilmann, Harry – Detroit Tigers: Almost hit .400 3x (.398, .394, .393). Poor fielder and runner hence being nicknamed the slug. Gave it up before he declined.
                                82. Killebrew, Harmon – Minnesota Twins: .256 career BA keeps him from being higher.
                                83. Oh, Sadaharu – Yomiuri Giants: Jim Albright projects his career numbers as: 2778 hits, 372 doubles, 527 HR, 4809 TB, .279/.412/.484.
                                84. Smith, Ozzie – St. Louis Cardinals: Best defensive player ever. Made the most out of his skills offensively to the point where he wasn't a liability. Hit .281 from age 30-38 (.238 career before).
                                85. Hartnett, Gabby – Chicago Cubs: Excellent defensive catcher, did everything well behind the plate and had a big arm. Professional hitter. Did okay in a brief managerial stint. Rallied the Cubs, taking the helm halfway through the season, in '38 and sent them to the WS with the homer in the gloamin'.
                                86. Sandberg, Ryne – Chicago Cubs: Looked bigger than he was playing second; 9 straight GG, 7/9 SS, 10 straight all-star games.
                                87. Robinson, Brooks – Baltimore Orioles: Defense at third is the stuff of legend. Enough pop in the bat for an MVP and 3 top four finishes. Excellent postseason player.
                                88. Dickey, Bill – New York Yankees: Taught Berra how to catch. Finished top six for MVP 4x straight ('36-39). Regularly hit .300.
                                89. Dihigo, Martin – Habana Leones: Could and did play anywhere on the diamond. Was a good pitcher in the mid-late 30's as well; although not considered a workhorse. Chris Cobb and others at BBTF have his major league estimates (http://www.baseballthinkfactory.org/.../martin_dihigo) at .300/.400/.500 (and over) from the mid-20's to mid-30's (becoming a switch hitter at the end) and around .300/.375/.475/125-140 OPS+ career with a 110 ERA+. Estimates seem a bit high to me.
                                90. Ewing, Buck – New York Giants: What he did as a catcher in 19th c. conditions is unbelievable. Played the corners too.
                                91. Alomar, Roberto – Toronto Blue Jays: Great glove at second. He and Vizquel were a daily highlight reel. Hit leadoff (3rd most), second (most) and third (2nd). Hit best third: 88, 99, 119 tOPS+ respectively.
                                92. Larkin, Barry – Cincinnati Reds: Averaged 115 games played per season. Highly regarded for his all-around ability. Lots of hardware, 115 OPS+, perennial .300 hitter.
                                93. Biggio, Craig – Houston Astros: Made first all-star team as a catcher. 5th in career doubles, 6th in Fld% at second base. 1 of 5 players w/250 HR and 400 steals. Played solid CF at 37 and 38.
                                94. Beltre, Adrian – Texas Rangers: Was a big deal when he first came up at 19. Inconsistent until age 31 with a huge age 25 season. Even then he was always a superb defender with pop. Really put it together the last 6 years. Getting out of Seattle's cavernous park helped.
                                95. Palmeiro, Rafael – Texas Rangers: Put up excellent numbers year in and year out. Only led league in doubles, runs and hits once a piece. Won 2 GG's when he actually played first base, 4x AS, MVP-5, MVP-6, MVP-8. '93-03 averaged 32 doubles, 39 HR, .288/.380/.555/138 OPS+.
                                96. Boggs, Wade – Boston Red Sox: Great contact hitter with a great plate approach. Station to station baserunner. Solid with the glove.
                                97. Trammel, Alan – Detroit Tigers: Dependable all-around excellent player. Hitting got better as he got older and his defense was declining. Half of the top double play duo of all-time.
                                98. Frisch, Frankie – St. Louis Cardinals: Smart player and had a good run as player/manager. Had four phenomenal world series for the Giants. Traded for Hornsby when he refused to play for McGraw after he berated him for missing a sign in front of the team. MVP and World Series record squeak him past...
                                99. Cronin, Joe – Boston Red Sox: Started managing at just 26. Good hitter with pop for a shortstop.
                                100. Wells, Willie – St. Louis Stars: Led the Chicago American Giants to consecutive world series titles. 8x all-star. Good hitter with some power. Meticulously studied opposing hitters tendencies to make up for a weak arm.
                                101. Appling, Luke – Chicago White Sox: I think his glove work is a bit overrated. Very dependable player with a long career. Highest single-season batting average for a shortstop.
                                102. Kelly, King – Chicago White Stockings: Versatile defender known for his catching ability and daring base running. Streaky year to year. A loose cannon.
                                103. Mauer, Joe – Minnesota Twins: Great hitter from the start. Won three batting titles (.328, .347, .365) and a percentage triple crown. In 6 full seasons behind the plate he won 3 GG's, 3 SS's and an MVP with 4th, 6th, 8th place finishes.
                                104. Reese, Pee Wee – Brooklyn Dodgers: Great range. Instinctive base runner. Had his time with the bat. Smart, winning player from his minor league days. Consummate pro.
                                105. Wilson, Jud – Baltimore Black Sox: Fiery personality and competitor. Often got into altercations with umps and opposing players. A helluva hitter. BBTF has him with a career 132 OPS+ (he played 23 seasons in the NeL). Line drive power. An average glove man.
                                106. Baker, Home Run – Philadelphia Athletics: Dominant in his 20's with 3 monster world series performances. Underrated glove. Particularly adept at charging bunts and making the barehanded scoop and throw to first in one motion.
                                107. Terry, Bill – New York Giants: McGraw's hand-picked successor didn't disappoint. Last man to hit .400.
                                108. Jones, Andruw – Atlanta Braves: Widely considered the best defensive CF ever. Hit .400 with 2 HR and 6 RBI in the WS at 19. As a regular with Atlanta ('97-07) he averaged 33 HR, 100 RBI, 12 SB, .263 and a 114 OPS+; 10 GG's, 5x AS, one SS. Hit 51 HR's in '05 (MVP-2). All but done after he left Atlanta after his age 30 season.
                                109. Molina, Yadier – St. Louis Cardinals: Excels at every facet defensively. Became a good enough hitter to bat third.
                                110. Clarke, Fred – Pittsburgh Pirates: Little talked about compared to Simmons, Waner, Wheat and Goslin despite having a 133 OPS+ in almost 10,000 PA. Success player/managing puts him an easy notch above.
                                111. O’Rourke, Jim – New York Giants: Not so sure I wouldn't want him on my team before Delahanty.
                                112. Puckett, Kirby – Minnesota Twins: Mentored by Tony Oliva and became one of the most dangerous hitters in baseball. Came up big in the postseason.
                                113. Yount, Robin – Milwaukee Brewers: Regular SS at age 18 w/.250 BA and 1.5 WAR. Pop came and went year to year. Solid with the glove in CF and at shortstop. Good all-around offensive player. MVP candidate when it all came together.
                                114. Beltran, Carlos – New York Mets: Underrated 5 tool player that could beat you with any and every facet of the game. Probably the best postseason player ever.
                                115. Mackey, Biz – Hilldale Daisies: Hitting dropped off after 32. Played a long time. Hit for high average and had some pop in his 20's.
                                116. Molitor, Paul – Milwaukee Brewers: Cocaine and injuries slowed him early. Had to DH to stay healthy. Hit until he retired.
                                117. Munson, Thurman – New York Yankees: Wish I could have put him above Jackson. Heart of the Yankees of the 70's.
                                118. Lundy, Dick – Baltimore Black Sox: SS in the million dollar infield. Managed teams to 3 pennants but lost in the world series despite excellent individual effort. Had some up and down seasons with the bat and hit for power in a couple seasons.
                                119. Kent, Jeff – San Francisco Giants: Stuck in deep Indians (boom) and Mets (bust) systems. Didn't hit his stride until his late 20's. Solid with the glove at best.
                                120. Garciaparra, Nomar – Boston Red Sox: Just 6 full prime seasons. First 4 pre-injury seasons were spectacular: .337/.386/.577/142 OPS+. Was more talented than Jeter. Had a tough time putting him this low. Could always hit through the injuries though.
                                121. White, Deacon – Buffalo Bisons: Dependable on the field and off. Won 2 batting titles as a catcher and 1B.
                                122. Cano, Robinson – New York Yankees: Professional hitter and good with the glove. 6x AS, 5 SS's, 2 GG's, four top 5 MVP finishes.
                                123. Barnes, Ross – Boston Red Stockings
                                124. Belle, Albert – Cleveland Indians: Clubhouse cancer but an absolute beast from '93-99.
                                125. Vaughan, Arky – Pittsburgh Pirates: Excellent hitter. Ok defender. Retired rather than play for Durocher.
                                126. Murphy, Dale – Atlanta Braves: A force from '80-87.
                                127. Rolen, Scott – St. Louis Cardinals: Seemed to get dinged up once a year. Thought he could make a throw from the LF bleachers.
                                128. Helton, Todd – Colorado Rockies: Made a run at .400 into late August-early September 2000. Defense separates him from some similar hitters.
                                129. Edmonds, Jim – St. Louis Cardinals: One of the best defensive CF's of the last 25 years. 8 GG's, .284 average, 132 OPS+, 393 HR's.
                                130. Dawson, Andre – Montreal Expos: 5 tool player before his knees went. Damn astroturf.
                                131. Williams, Billy – Chicago Cubs: “...never gets excited. Never gets mad. Never throws a bat. You write his name down, in the same spot every day, and you forget it. He will play left, he will bat third. Billy Williams is a machine.” - Leo Durocher
                                132. Torriente, Cristobal – Chicago American Giants: Build like Honus Wagner. Had temper and a poor attitude (once quit because the owner wouldn't reimburse him for a stolen diamond ring). His absence likely cost the 1926 Monarchs the pennant. He was, however a dominant offensive player and above average defender.
                                133. Stovey, Harry – Philadelphia Athletics
                                134. Berkman, Lance – Houston Astros: When healthy always hit around .300/30/100 and significantly better at his peak.
                                135. Simmons, Al – Philadelphia Athletics: Had tremendous numbers in the high scoring mid-20's to mid-30's. .354 and 146 OPS+ from 22-32; .291 and 103 after age 32. Admitted that he accepted the White Sox second place attitude and allowed his performance to slip. Hit .329/.380/.658 with 6 HR and 17 RBI in 80 WS PA's. Not a ton of speed. Mostly LFer but played a more than adequate CF in his prime.
                                136. Winfield, Dave – San Diego Padres: More talented athlete than most on this list. Longevity and LQ tops...
                                137. Walker, Larry – Colorado Rockies: 5 tools, big arm, don't penalize him as much for Coors Field as some do. Missed a lot of games due to injury which knocks him down for me. All-around play tops...
                                138. Goslin, Goose – Washington Senators: I don't think OPS+ quite accounts for Griffith. Not a particularly hard working player.
                                139. Waner, Paul – Pittsburgh Pirates: Standout batter even in his day.
                                140. Brock, Lou – St. Louis Cardinals: Bad fielder. Real good pop for a leadoff man. One of the best world series players ever.
                                141. Burkett, Jesse – Cleveland Spiders: Really bad in the field. Known for fouling off pitches. 80% of his hits were singles. One of the greatest ever at bunting for a hit. Could run a little.
                                142. Suttles, Mule – St. Louis Stars: Known as a clutch hitter and mentor to younger players. One of the best, if not the best, pure power hitters in the Negro Leagues. Poor fielder even by Greenberg/Mize/Killebrew standards. Struck out a lot. Benefited from short porch in St. Louis.
                                143. Keeler, Wee Willie – Baltimore Orioles: One of, if not the best, bat handlers ever. Speed left him by 30 and XBH plummeted.
                                144. Rice, Sam – Washington Senators: If not for his tragic late start he could have challenged 4000 hits. Speed was about gone when his career got rolling.
                                145. Ward, Monte – New York Giants: Top pitcher (164-103, 28.4 WAR) before moving to CF and then SS. Never was much of a hitter.
                                146. Evers, Johnny – Chicago Cubs: One of the best inside ball players ever.
                                147. Lombardi, Ernie – Cincinnati Reds: Known for his big bat (literally at 42 oz.), slowness afoot and big nose. Hit .300 ten times. Had a cannon arm and called a great game.
                                148. Boudreau, Lou – Cleveland Indians: Only 7 full seasons outside WWII (I don't give much credit for diluted WWII numbers). Amazing '48 season. Good manager.
                                149. Browning, Pete – Louisville Colonels
                                150. Hill, Pete – Chicago American Giants: Known for his keen batting eye, consistency, baseball intellect, clutch and pinch hitting ability. Saw significant time in CF although primarily playing left with Sol White's Philadelphia Giants in his mid-20's makes me skeptical he spent the majority of his career there. Retained his speed and live ball allowed him to keep pinch hitting into his mid-40's. Solid manager.
                                151. Glasscock, Jack – Indianapolis Hoosiers: Played almost exclusively for long defunct franchises thus unknowingly hurting his legacy. Was considered one of the top 2-3 players in the game for a couple years.
                                152. Nagashima, Shigeo – Yomiuri Giants: 5 tool player in his prime. Known as a hustling, clutch player. Superb defender until retirement; won gold gloves at 37 and 38. Walter O'Malley attempted to sign him after Yomiuri trained with the Dodgers in '61. 5x MVP, missed 30/30 season as a rookie by forgetting to touch first on a HR.
                                153. Allen, Dick – Philadelphia Phillies: Great hitter. Clubhouse cancer. Straight quit on a couple ball clubs.

                                165. Wheat, Zack – Brooklyn Robins: One of the few players to swing from the knob successfully in the deadball era. Naturally, he adjusted well to the live ball era and has some of his best seasons in his mid-late 30's. Really good with the glove.

                                194. Santop, Louis – Hilldale Daisies: Prodigious power hitter. Strong and accurate arm. Error in the '23 world series led to Biz Mackey replacing him. Declined after age 34 season; pinch hitter and utility reserve his final two seasons in '25 and '26.
                                195. Whitaker, Lou – Detroit Tigers: With the bat a couple poor seasons, a couple excellent seasons, normally above average. Other half of the best double play duo ever.

                                197. Grich, Bobby – California Angels: Good eye and had some pop. Having his best season in '81 the only year he hit .300. Gold glove second baseman with Baltimore. Hit poorly in the postseason.
                                198. Lazzeri, Tony – New York Yankees: Shortstop in the minors. Lots of triples as a RHH in Yankee Stadium (77 at home & 43 away). Known as a smart, quick thinking player with a reputation for hitting in the clutch. Done at 33.

                                204. Minoso, Minnie – Chicago White Sox: Fun, flashy player. Good foot speed, caught stealing in hit & runs with the go-go Sox, serviceable in left field.

                                206. Wynn, Jim – Houston Astros: Astrodome kept his power numbers down a little. I don't think it is as extreme as some folks make it out to be in his particular case. I think WAR vastly overrates him in general.
                                207. Dandridge, Ray – Newark Eagles: Typical, high contact, low strikeout, hit & run spray hitter coming up in the early 30's. Known for his big arm and smooth fielding. Saw significant time at SS in his 20's and could play 2nd well too.

                                210. DeMoss, Bingo – Chicago American Giants Giants: One of the best bunters and hit & run players in baseball and a smart, quick defender. Huslter. Good base stealer. Had some really good seasons with the bat but mostly average. Chicago won 3 pennants in his 6 seasons as captain.
                                211. Rice, Jim – Boston Red Sox: Good hitter and run producer. Spent ¼ of his career as a DH. Finished top 5 for AL MVP 6x with one win.

                                217. Davis, Eric – Cincinnati Reds: Big power/speed peak in his 20's until injuries hit. Was a 5 tool guy then. Came back with a few real solid full seasons and hung round until 35.
                                218. Burks, Ellis – Boston Red Sox
                                219. Cruz Sr., Jose – Houston Astros: Hit twice as many HR's away from the Astrodome. Not lacking in any tool but not a standout with any one either.
                                220. Johnson, Indian Bob – Philadelphia Athletics: Played SS in industrial leagues in southern California until he was 23. Debuted at 27 and posted a 137 OPS+ and a 5 all-star appearances until WWII.

"No matter how great you were once upon a time — the years go by, and men forget,” - W. A. Phelon in Baseball Magazine in 1915. “Ross Barnes, forty years ago, was as great as Cobb or Wagner ever dared to be. Had scores been kept then as now, he would have seemed incomparably marvelous.”
