  • Garvey or Clark?

Thought this would be an interesting poll given that Will Clark received the one and done treatment by the baseball writers yesterday while Steve Garvey again received somewhat respectable support.

    Will Clark

I think Clark's peak at least makes him arguable for the HOF, while I don't think Garvey is really even close to the mark.

Clark had the better peak, but Garvey had more good years and was an iron horse. I think he still has the 3rd or 4th longest playing streak in major league history. After Clark left the Giants he had injuries it seemed all the time.

Any thoughts on why Garvey gets at least modest support, while Clark got none? Perhaps something to do with being a high profile player on some successful L.A. Dodger teams?

Garvey did make 10 All Star teams, and led the Dodgers to four World Series and the Padres to one World Series. Clark only made one World Series and got swept, 4-0.

On every statistical measure that I have ever seen, Clark beats Garvey heavily in his peak. Although Garvey had a longer career, Clark was so much better per game that he still has more career value.

The only legitimate case that can be made for Garvey is that he was regarded as the better player at the time. But, that is flawed IMO because Garvey's flaws (no plate discipline) weren't really thought to be serious gashes in his armor. He also was a consistent 100 RBI man mostly because of that lack of patience, and the RbI were just as overrated as the patience was underrated.

Thank god people are getting this one right...Garvey is about as overrated as they come.

This one isn't remotely close. Clark by a mile. Garvey was a fine player but not in Clark's class.

I voted for the The Thrill and I don't think it is very close. Yes, I am a Giants fan, but I'd never let that influence my voting....

                      the knuschler takes this one.
garvey didn't go after it on defense.

Agreed! Clark was the better player...

For what it's worth, I have Clark somewhere between 13th and 18th among first basemen...they're all really close...and I have Garvey way down in the 30s.

Is this some sort of joke?

I've got Clark just inside the top 20 (I believe 18th) and have no clue where I rank Garvey.
                            Johnson and now Goligoski gone.
                            I hope that's all.

Why would you think I was joking?

Among first basemen, I've got Clark between 13th and 18th (not that different than you) and arvey way further down...what's wrong with that?
