  • Franchise all-time line ups by best year by a player

My team's the Yankees, so I'll take them:

Babe Ruth's best season (1921) came when he was playing LF for the Yankees, therefore he is there.

    C-Yogi Berra 1950
    1B-Lou Gehrig 1927
2B-Alfonso Soriano 2002 (slightly over Joe Gordans MVP year)
    SS-Derek Jeter 1999
    3B-Alex Rodriguez 2005
LF-Babe Ruth 1921 (slightly over Babe Ruth 1920)
    CF-Mickey Mantle 1956 (slightly over Joe Dimaggio's 1937)
    RF-Roger Marris 1961
    DH-Jason Giambi 2005

C - Dan Wilson - 1996 (we don't ahave much to go with here, hoping Johjima will be better)
    1B - Richie Sexson - 2005(39 HR's beats out Davis, Olerud, and T.Martinez)
    2B - Brett Boone - 2001 (37 HR's, RBI title, 330+ BA - amazing season)
    3B - Edgar Martinez - 1992 (.343 BA, 46 doubles)
SS - Alex Rodriguez - 1996 (league leading .358 BA just beats out his 40/40 season)
    LF - Jay Buhner - 1996 (i'm cheating a little here since he's really a rightfielder)
CF - Ken Griffey - 1997 (followed closely by 1994)
    RF - Ichiro Suzuki - 2004 (2001 wasn't bad either)
DH - Edgar Martinez - 1995 (hey, you never said he couldn't be on here twice - he did have our best seasons at both 3B and DH).

      2B: Bobby Doerr, 1946
      SS: Nomar Garciaparra, 2000
      3B: Wade Boggs, 1987
      LF: Carl Yastrzemski, 1967
      CF: Tris Speaker, 1912
      RF: Ted Williams, 1942
      DH: David Ortiz, 2005

      SP: Pedro Martinez, 2000
      SP: Roger Clemens, 1987

      SP: Lefty Grove, 1936
      SP: Smokey Joe Wood, 1912

      RP: Dick Radatz, 1964

I honestly didn't think Gordon was the best, but I was too lazy to go past 1998 for a closer at the time.

        BoSox....No Ruth?

        Ruth in 1916 went 23-12, 23 CG, 9 SHO, 323.7 IP, 170 K, 1.75 ERA.

I would have expected to see Ruth in the rotation of the Red Sox, with the aforementioned stats.

You'd be better off with Ellis Kinder, 1953.

Really, why does Kinder's name never come up among great relief pitchers. He had four years of ERA+ over 150, and a career ERA+ of 124, and it's not like he was pitching 60-70 innings like most modern relief aces, he consistently pitched about 120 innings a season. And I forgot to mention he did all that at Fenway. Very underrated player.

VERY quick research on this, but here is my submission for the Phils

              C - Spud Davis 1932
              1B - Jim Thome 2003
              2B - Nap Lajoie 1897
              3B - Mike Schmidt 1980
              SS - Dick Bartell 1932
              LF - Ed Delahanty 1894
              CF - Billy Hamilton 1894
              RF - Chuck Klein 1930
SP - Steve Carlton 1972 (arguably the best season by ANY starting pitcher ever)
              RP - Billy Wagner 2005
Let's rid baseball of the pestilence of the DH now and forever!

                  1980 Bill Caudill

I picked starting pitchers from all over Cub history because I didn't want to put 5 guys who played from 1905-1908 on the list.

BoSox isn't much of a George Herman guy. Don't hold your breath for any mention

                            RP-Fingers 1973

How's that? The most surprising to me, being a non A's guy was that Tejada didn't fare better. I used Lee Sinis' Saber Encyclopedia and his great RCAA, RCAP and RSAA stats for most of the work.

Personal foul called on poster for using Foxx and Grove as Red Sox.

If we were creating teams they would be on the A's all-time team.

Fisk actually played more games for the ChiSox.
