  • Anyone ever had a better half-season than Johan Santana?

Here are the splits for his 2004 season, one of the most amazing half's I have ever seen a player have.

    2004:
    April: 5.40 ERA, 1-0, 28.1 IP, 24 K
    May: 5.79 ERA, 1-3, 32.2 IP, 30 K
    June: 2.39 ERA, 4-1, 37.2 IP, 46 K
    July: 1.17 ERA, 3-2, 46 IP, 61 K
    August: 2.08 ERA, 6-0, 43.1 IP, 52 K
    September: 0.45 ERA, 5-0, 40 IP, 52 K

    isnt that amazing?

I'm not sure how good other player's second halfs were, but I must say ever since I've been following baseball (not that long mind you), I've never seen a pitcher have a second half as good as Santana, especially in relation with his first half.

      Since 1933, half-seasons with ERA < 2.00, WHIP < 0.90 and sOPS+ < 40
(Min. 100 IP for the split)

      Johan Santana, 2004, 2nd half
      Javier Vazquez, 2001 2nd half
      Pedro Martinez, 2000, 1st half
      Greg Maddux, 1998, 1st half
      Greg Maddux, 1995, 1st half
      Greg Maddux, 1995, 2nd half
      Jerry Reuss, 1980, 1st half
      Ron Guidry, 1978, 2nd half
      Don Wilson, 1971, 2nd half
      Sandy Koufax, 1965, 2nd half
      Joe Horlen, 1964, 2nd half
      Sandy Koufax, 1963, 1st half
      Jim Hearn, 1950, 2nd half

Amazing how Maddux had two of these insane halves in one season (1995)!
      My top 10 players:

      1. Babe Ruth
      2. Barry Bonds
      3. Ty Cobb
      4. Ted Williams
      5. Willie Mays
      6. Alex Rodriguez
      7. Hank Aaron
      8. Honus Wagner
      9. Lou Gehrig
      10. Mickey Mantle

Lowest ERA in a half since 1914, minimum 100 IP....

        Ferdie Schupp, 0.71 - 2nd half, 1916.

        Who didn't know that??

When it comes to WHIP, Pedro's 2nd half of that season was even better. He had the lowest WHIP in a half (min. 100 IP) since 1914 (.703).
