  • Player Weights

I have a question...... Lets say you're looking for information on a baseball player(Lou Gehrig this instance) It gives his height as 6'0 200.......But I read in his biography that he weighed as much as 225. In Baseball-reference it lists Ruth as 215lbs.....when I see pics of Ruth he looks about 235. The point is are these weights early in their careers or at what point of their careers do they derive them from since player weights vary so much?
"I was pitching one day when my glasses clouded up on me. I took them off to polish them. When I looked up to the plate, I saw Jimmie Foxx. The sight of him terrified me so much that I haven't been able to wear glasses since." - Left Gomez

"(Lou) Gehrig never learned that a ballplayer couldn't be good every day." - Hank Gowdy

how can we lack for so much data involving early baseball men (salaries just to name one) but we have an encyclopedia which magically contains the height and weight of every ballplayer

If you want accurate height and weight, the best place is probably any biographical source. Who knows where baseball-reference gets their info from, or when that player weighed that amount.

Ruth is a rare case only because his weight is always such an issue. Luckily from his spring training weigh ins and his work at McGoverns gym, we have accurate numbers.

You'd be right about him at 235 if you're talking about '31

        Because of the baseball cards.

Unless you're talking way back, before those were common - then I have no idea. I do know the cards listed them back then because I remember someone posting about Hack Wilson being 5'6" 190 lbs, and it was so magtical that it fit right in with his 56 HR, 190 RBI season.
