  • BBF Ranking Game – Election #43 – Voting

Welcome to the BBF Ranking Game. We are creating an all-time ranking of players based on the wisdom of the crowd.

This is the Voting thread for Election #43, where we will determine the 316th-326th best players of all-time. In the Nomination thread, we determined these as the 22 candidates for this election:

    Luis Aparicio
    Dave Bancroft
    Lou Brock
    Bob Caruthers
    Orlando Cepeda
    Carlos Delgado
    Art Fletcher
    Nellie Fox
    Pud Galvin
    Nomar Garciaparra
    Brian Giles
    Frank Grant
    Addie Joss
    Tommy Leach
    Don Newcombe
    Sam Rice
    Edd Roush
    Chris Sale
    Joe Sewell
    Robin Ventura
    Billy Wagner
    David Wright

The preferred voting method is make a post here ranking these players from 1 to 22, from best to worst. We’re also allowing the use of Ties and Quadrant Voting as options.

The voting will remain open at least 72 hours. After that, three voters are needed to end it (Nominate Closing – 2nd – 3rd). Then someone will tally the results, which I can handle for the present time.

Please post any questions concerning this project in the Proposal thread. You will also find complete rules for this project. Thanks for playing!

    Criteria for election:
    • We’ll consider anyone who could be eligible as a player for the NBHOFM. So all professional players in the United States since 1869. Value in other play such as NABBP, foreign leagues, barnstorming, etc., should be considered, as long as a significant portion of a player’s career value was accrued in professional play in North America.
    • We do want to consider circumstances that prevented players from participating at the game’s highest level at times when they could have been contributors. Due credit should be given for time missed due to short schedules, military service, racial barriers, being trapped in the minors, being blackballed or banned. But no extra credit for injuries, accidents or premature death.
    • Voters are expected to make their best effort to rank Negro leaguers and other players for whom the statistical record is incomplete or sketchy.
    • It’s left to the individual voter how much consideration to give to peak vs career, league quality affects, positional balance, time-lining, postseason credit, leverage, etc.
    • We’re here to rank the players, from the greatest on down. “The definition of a great player is one who helps his team win a lot of games.” -Bill James
    • So this ain’t the hall of fame; there’s no “character clause”. We’re assessing playing performance, nothing else. This task is difficult enough; we don’t need to consider how much weight to give non-playing factors, such as speculations about leadership, or sanctions for cheating, or hit pieces from disaffected writers, etc.

Are you sure Edd Roush hadn't been picked before? I had him crossed off my list. I would have been all over him every round, as he is rated 74th on my overall position players list!

The 1906 "Hitless Wonders" Chicago White Sox were the greatest team of all time.

He made the ballot in Election #39 but has had trouble finding support since then.

Thanks Freakshow, looks like I dropped the ball on this one.

I will be participating, as having reviewed the PED case against Giles isn't strong enough for me (regardless of what I personally might think about him or his character with hitting/getting hit by his girlfriend).

The 1906 "Hitless Wonders" Chicago White Sox were the greatest team of all time.

I don't believe that, but I go with as evidence with the preponderance of evidence level as if in court. As much as it pains me, Juan Gonzalez and Brian Giles get this benefit of the doubt. Heck, I personally had Sammy Sosa in my HOF until further evidence came to light...you can imagine it was a joyous day in Toledo (Spain!) when Sammy was ejected from my personal HOF! For I must have made one or two comments over the years expressing a slight personal dislike of Sammy Sosa.

Luckily neither Giles nor Gonzalez make my personal HOF, although Gonzalez is painfully close.

I have the opposite happening to me. This is the first round in a while in which a clear majority (over 60%) are in my pHOF. The previous several rounds were basically 50/50, and this includes rounds in which there were just 20 players listed.

Boy, talk about interesting choices at SS! Garciaparra clearly the best of this bunch at his peak, but cut short by injuries. Aparicio a great baserunner and an outstanding defender for a very long time. Sewell and Bancroft very steady. And another great defender in Fletcher. Plus Grant, a guy whose career is buried in the far past.
