Though they weren't regular starters, you can add Satchel Paige to this trio in '49, and Hal Newhouser in '55 and '56.

And they spent a lot of time together too. 15 seasons for Smoltz and Glavine, 10 years for Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz. 11 years for Smoltz and Maddux.
Most of the other combinations mentioned were not together long, or the pitchers were not all in their peaks at the same time.

I can't see Smoltz making it at this point. I know he's got the Eckersley factor going for him, and when healthy, he has been a much better starter than Eckersley was as a starter. But Eckersley was just about the most dominant reliever ever for about a 5 or 6 year stretch, and that stretch had a lot to do with bringing prominence to the position. Smoltz was a very, very good reliever but it was just for a three year stretch. If Smoltz reaches 200 wins, then I think his chances will improve immensely, but that is not likely to happen until at least 2007.

Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

I thought Ruth stopped pitching regularly after 1919????
"Hey Mr. McGraw! Can I pitch to-day?"

yeah - i was taking a little liberty - he pitched those years but he wasn't really in the rotation

You could add Pennock/Hoyt/Covelski in 1928 for good measure.

Also Mathewson/McGinnity/Marquard in '08, though it was Rube's rookie season and he only pitched 5 innings.

How do you pronounce Marquard anyway??

Satchel started a grand total of five games in 1949. He had twelve starts as a member of the Indians. Newhouser had exactly one start with the Indians in 1954. He had no starts in 1955. These two were about as far removed from regular starters for the Indians as you can get.
