The ballot will include 32 Players for elections #78 thru xx. So, in this thread we will determine the 19 players who will be added to the ballot, along with the eleven carryovers, for the 84th election. Basically, someone nominates a player for inclusion on the ballot, and two other people need to support the nomination for the player to make the ballot. When we get our eighteen guys the nominations are closed for this round. Someone then will start the Voting thread where we will rank the 30 players.

You should limit yourself to only three Nomination + support votes in a calendar day. To be clear, this does not mean that if you Nominate three players at 11:59 pm that you can then make three more votes two minutes later at 12:01 am. After your third vote in a day wait at least six hours or until midnight ET, whichever comes later. We want to encourage participation from different BBF members.

It is helpful if someone can post an update after every couple of ballots, as it can be difficult to see the current nominating status of every player. I will try to keep an updated list of the ballot in this post.

This thread is also for discussion of the players. However, discussion should be in a separate post from your nominate/support votes. But don’t take this too strictly; a brief comment along with your nominate/support vote is fine.

Please post any questions concerning this project in the Proposal thread. Thanks for playing!

                Modern guys:
1st: Justin Upton - hurt by a Baseball-Reference only view, +4 wins at Fangraphs, stood out in the views I did recently of wRC+ and productive plate appearances vs outs. Fine hitter + average defense and base running make him worthy for me. Best player from the 10 year stretch (2009-2018) available, he ranks below Matt Kemp with Retrosheet, but the other defensive metrics are MUCH more skeptical, where Upton is solid across the board. ...https://baseball.tomthress.com/Leade...162&ga=1&n=499

1st: Matt Carpenter - +3 wins with Fangraphs/UZR or Tom Thress versus Baseball-Reference, best player available from his six year peak (2013-108) https://baseball.tomthress.com/Leade...162&ga=1&n=499

1st: DJ Lemahieu - bump for 2020 MVP COVID year and for Baseball Savant Outs Above Average being a bigger fan than Baseball-Reference DRS defensive methods.

                UPDATE:
                2nds: Hooks Dauss, Corey Seager

1sts: Matt Carpenter, Adam Dunn, Dave Kingman, DJ Lemahieu, Eddie Lopat, Chris Hoiles, Rube Marquard, Claude Ritchey, Hank Sauer, Justin Upton, Rick Wise

                Top ~60 candidates:

C - Gervasio Gonzalez, Chris Hoiles, Jonathan Lucroy, Victor Martinez, Benito Santiago, Andy Seminick, Terry Steinbach, Jason Varitek
1B - Brandon Belt, Harry Davis, Ron Fairly, Prince Fielder
2B - Bret Boone, Phil Garner, Miller Huggins, DJ Lemahieu
3B - Matt Carpenter, Travis Fryman, Richie Hebner, Leon Kellman, Arlie Latham, Terry Pendleton
SS - Davy Force, Marcus Semien, Chris Speier, Garry Templeton, Jose Valentin
LF - Augustin Bejerano, Kevin McReynolds, Ben Oglivie, Greg Vaughn
CF - Brady Anderson, Marquis Grissom, Dave Henderson, Willie McGee, Rick Monday
RF - Raul Mondesi, Hunter Pence, Justin Upton, Vic Wertz

Nominate Sparky Lyle - not sure why he slipped in his late 30s, but through age 34, he's in the Top 10 pWAR of relievers (80% games) through age 34 - four 3.0 pWAR seasons - very good postseason record for the most part (although the 1978 ALCS was not kind to him) - sometimes a good batter, especially in the NL
                  Nominate Will White
                  2nd Rube Marquard

Where are you and others with Lyle vs Tug McGraw and Lindy McDaniel, the later two I'm comfortable supporting now or soon, and Lyle feeling early yet (but has been getting pretty consistent nomination support and the other two have no).

Notes on items, Baseball-Reference WAR, B-R WAA, B-R Playoff WPA, B-R WPA, B-R Clutch, Baseball Gauge, Fangraphs, Tom Thress, Tom Thress value metric, and Eric Chalek's value metric included.

McDaniel has the best career value of the group by a fair margin, McGraw the best win probability added/clutch by a fair margin.
