  • 2008 Tigers offense: Best ever?

Is this the best offensive starting lineup ever?

I averaged out the last season stats of who are supposed to be their starting nine: Pudge, Guillen, Renteria, Polanco, Miggy, Maggs, Granderson, Jones, and Sheffield, and came up with

    .309/.370/.491, 15 HR, 85 RBI, 124 OPS+, 8.4 WARP3

    That's incredible.

Maggs will regress, book it. Polanco won't hit the same, and Granderson likely won't either. Renteria is extremely overrated and likely won't hit that well in Commerica. Pudge can't take a walk to save his life and will be lucky to have an OBP of over .320.

Their main problem as I see it is their bench. They are weak as a wet noodle, i.e. Juan Pierre's arm, on the bench.

I have no doubt that they will mostly regress, so I suppose that I should have rephrased the question to be "strongest starting lineup on paper at the start of th season of all time".

Since this thread is in the History Forum I thought you were referring to the 1908 Detriot Tigers. The '08 Tigers had a 119 OPS+ as a team by the way.

Ya, I thought about that after I posted it and I don't know how to change the title. Maybe a mod could change it to 2008 instead of '08.

So did I!!! Started thinking about the lineup even before I read further in the thread or looked anything up. :cap:

Why wont Renteria hit well in Comerica? He was a better road hitter last season, and every Tigers righty hit noticeably better at home in '07.

He had a BABIP fifty points higher than his career average. I don't think Renteria will hit .332 again, if he goes back to his career average that'll give him a line around:

.348/.411, that line would give him an OPS+ of around 100 (assuming the league averages stay about the same)

Preseason opinions say that the Detroit Tiger offense, bench, and SP staff are probably the strongest in MLB.

As Tiger observer, I fear that they repeat their annual 2nd half demise which has been brought about from poor defense and faltering bullpen. The Tigers did not address those weaknesses instead opting to improve their strengths.
In the 1920's, Harry Heilmann led the AL with a .364 average. In addition, he averaged 220 hits, 45 doubles, 12 triples, 16 homers, 110 runs, and 130 RBI.

Not so much Commerica, but a prediction for the season. I'm still trying to see HOW righties did better at home than they did on the road, that park has the reputation of a pitcher's park. Still though an offense of:

                            Granderson (.350/.500)
                            Polanco (.360/.420)
                            Mags (.370/.500)
                            Cabrera (.420/.550)
                            Sheff (.380/.470) if healthy
                            Guillen (.365/.500)
                            Rodriguez (.300/.430)
                            Renteria (.350/.410)
                            Jones (.330/.460)

                            Is pretty solid.

the Mets lineup is better, so is the Yankees. Where do you get 'best of all time' from? The only guy in there that scares you in cabrera..the rest are either past their prime or had fluke seasons last year.
