  • Signing Black Players in Organized BB, 1945+

    Was wondering if you guys could help to fill out this list of black players that signed within organized baseball for the first ten or so years after J. Robby.

    Also does anyone have or know where a list of all black players that appeared in the majors listed individually say for each season 1947-60 or so?

    The following are dates that the signing occurred or at least announced:

    8/28/1945
    Jackie Robinson signs with Dodgers

    1/29/1946
    Dodgers sign semi-pro pitcher John R. Wright
    -former memeber of US Navy
    -entered pro ball with New Orleans Zulus in 1936
    -while playing in Louisville in 1937 he was signed by the Newark Eagles
    -also played for Toledo Crawfords, Homestead Grays, Great Lakes Naval Station All-Negro team and the Brooklyn Naval Air Base team

    Dodgers sign Don Newcombe and Roy Campanella

    7/3/1947
    Indians sign Larry Doby from Newark Eagles

    8/24/1947
    Dodgers buy Dan Bankhead from Memphis

    7/7/1948
    Indians sign Satchel Paige

    12/14/1948
    Braves sign Waldon Williams

    12/27/1948
    Dodgers signed Monte Irvin over the winter 1948-49 but released him when they found he was property of the Newark Eagles. Effa manley filed a protest with Happy Chandler on 1/11/1949. He was thought to be a free agent. Branch Rickey withdrew his claim to Irvin.

    Sam Jones with Cleveland Indians

    Leander Tugerson signed by CWS after the 1951 season

    Dave Hoskins with Dallas in 1952

    2/23/1952
    Ray Neil signs with Dallas of the Texas League (Indians). Neil is released on March 19

    6/14/1952
    Billy Harrell signs with the Indians

    9/19/1952
    Phillies sign Theodore Washington

    11/29/1952
    Dallas signs Reuban Smart

    1952 or 1953
    Percy Miller Jr., Nat Peeples, and Jim and Leander Tugerson
