  • All-time Chicago team

So what do you guys think? This is carrying over from the all-time New York team thread. Who were the very best in Chicago? You can choose from the Cubs and the White Sox.

    C Carlton Fisk
    1B Mark Grace
    2B Ryne Sandberg
    3B Ron Santo
    SS Luke Appling
    LF Billy Williams
    CF Hack Wilson
    RF Andre Dawson
    DH* Frank Thomas

    * = If needed

    Bench
    1B/SS Ernie Banks
    2B Nellie Fox
    SS Luis Aparicio
    OF Joe Jackson
    LF/3B Minnie Minoso
    OF/DH Harold Baines

    Starting Rotation
    Ferguson Jenkins
    Hippo Vaughn
    Mordecai Brown
    Red Faber
    Ted Lyons

    Bullpen
    Lee Smith
    Bobby Thigpen
    Bruce Sutter
    Ed Walsh**

    ** = Spot Starter

I'm kinda stuck on the bullpen, so any help is needed there.

I knew I missed somebody. Thigpen is one of them.

As for my lineup, this can be debated:

      1) SS Appling
      2) 2B Sandberg
      3) LF Williams
      4) DH Thomas
      5) 3B Santo
      6) CF Wilson
      7) C Fisk
      8) 1B Grace
      9) RF Dawson

...Williams and Wilson can easily swap positions in this lineup. Sandberg batting second makes so much sense. You have good punch in the lineup even at the 6-7-8 spots. This is a very good starting nine to have.

        1. I think that you need to replace either Banks or Baines with Frank Thomas.
        2. I'd take Maddux over Ferguson Jenkins.
        3. Bullpen: add Bruce Sutter, Bobby Thigpen, Kerry Wood, Dennis Eckersley and Jack McDowell.

I just can't keep Ernie off of this team. There are 3 shortstops on the team, so one of them will not be a starter. Aparicio is the odd man out. Appling is too solid, so I put him at shortstop. Ernie's second most played position is first base, so I could put him there.

Harold Baines was a good DH. Tough to choose between him and Frank.

I don't see how Harold Baines is in the same galaxy as Frank Thomas.

Anson's off my team because of his ego and his off-the-field issues. While Hornsby had a good stint with the Cubs for 4 years, you have to look at the whole body of work. The players I listed played longer than 4 years in Chicago, even Minoso.

I'd bat Sandberg second, Williams third, Wilson fourth (the man does hold the MLB single season record for RBIs).

Are you clear about the difference between Thomas and Baines?
Thomas had an OBP of .421 and a SLG of .561 for his career.
The numbers for Baines are .356 and .465. Some people would
have Thomas close to their best team ever for the whole
of baseball, and you won't have him on one with only two
of the historically quite mediocre teams. It does not make
                      sense.

I assume that you excluded Sosa because of his steroids and
"attitude" like the Cap Anson example. There's not a doubt
that his production surpasses Dawson by far. He had some of
the very best seasons in club history.

Minoso versus Williams is probably very close.

Don't forget the Chicago American Giants who had such players as John Henry "Pop" Lloyd.

Hawk, don't be so pushy. Sosa is off my team for obvious reasons, like you pointed out. He had some of the very best seasons in club history with some help. That doesn't make it legit, especially if you compare with the others listed.

I guess you got me on Thomas. Okay...

Here's my changed lineup, in case you were wondering.

Still pretty solid. You got some home run pop, obviously. You need to get on base, though, and I think Appling, Williams and Wilson provide that.
