To bad Lakin couldn't have stayed healthy through-out his career,it would have been fun to see what kinda numbers he could have put up.Jeter will probably go on and get 3,000 hit before his career is over.as a whole I will go with Jeter-but a young healthy Larkin had alot of talent-and was an all around athlete....

I can see Jeter catching Larkin, but I've got Barry.

what about jeter's defense? how much does that hurt his value? there was recently an article i read that called jeter one of the worst defensive shortstops ever. for a guy who won three straight gg's thats a bit shocking, but i guess they can be wrong.

I would tend to agree with this, but I don't think Jeter has long to catch him.

i'd take Jeter as a better peak player

but career wise Jeter needs a few more solid years, maybe 1-2

A pretty good bit. Average or above average defense and I'd probably already put him ahead of Larkin.

Kind've frustrating to think, though, that Larkin will likely struggle to get in Cooperstown and Jeter would go in if he retired tonight.

They could be wrong, but any research consistently shows him to be near the worst. And hell, even watching the guy you can see he doesn't get to as many balls as other players.

Jeter is well ahead in Win Shares and RCAA and will easily pass Larkin in WARP3 in time. This despite Larkin playing in six more seasons than Jeter. Larkin's inability to stay on the field really hurts him in this comparison.

By the time Jeter retires he'll easily be ahead IMO, providing he can keep up his offensive ability and decline normally.

That's the thing. Larkin was probably an all around better player because of his defense, but he missed a lot of time, undercutting his value, while Jeter has been very durable.

I say Larkin is ahead at the moment, but with Jeter just behind him. Jeter could pass him this season if he plays good enough...we'll see - probably within 2 years at least.

Yeah, at his best and healthy Larkin was better. Unfortunately, that wasn't all that often.

                        I'd take Jeter.

If you replace the average amount of time Larkin missed on a yearly basis and supplemented that with replacement value, you'd probably be behind Jeter.
