The unis of the late 1970s-early 80s totally rock! The 1976-86 era were my formative baseball watching years so the uniforms of this era are special to me.

Nothing wrong with colorful uniforms to break up the monotony of "white home/road gray" I sport a gold '79 Bucs jersey to every game I go to at PNC Park. I wish the Bucs would use that as an "alternate" jersey instead of that garish red alternate jersey they wear occaisionally now. I will go on record and say that "red menace" is the worst Pirate jersey ever. As for other "bad" jerseys, I would put the White Sox "supercollars with shorts" look at the top of the list. I also think the "Powder Blue" road jersey phase wasn't a shining moment in uniform history either.
      LETS GO BUCS!!

I'll admit that I really like the black/yellow uniforms the Pirates sported in the late 70's. They are very similar to the uniforms I wore when I was young, which may have something to do with it.

Some of the ugliest jerseys I've seen (on a good team) are the all orange jerseys the Orioles sported.

I'll always love the gold Pirates jersey. I played on a little league team called the Pirates back in the day and we wore the gold tops with white pants.

And I agree about the powder blue jerseys. I hate it whenever the Cards take part in a turn back the clock game because more times than not they were those lame powder blues.

Nearly half the teams in MLB wore powder blue as their road unis in the early 1980s:

            Expos
            Cardinals
            Phillies
            Cubs
            Blue Jays
            Brewers
            Royals
            Rangers
            Mariners

I certainly agree. The Pirates should bring back those gold uniforms. They were awesome. I dont know what they were thinking when they introduced the red jerseys? And i hate plain white ones. BORING!

Some people mention the all orange uniforms the Orioles wore. I never saw them and they didnt wear all orange during the 79 world series so they must have been a rare occasion. I also liked the Astros orange/yellow uniforms of the 70's-80's.

But I do like the 70's acrylic no button uniforms. The Padres also had some sweet unis.

There was an oldtimers day at Shea in the late 70s that I remember well. It was common for the Mets to bring back old Dodgers and Giants to those events. Anyway, they didnt bother to get retro uniforms for whatever reason, and the old Giants were all dressed up in those orange SF uniforms.
Seeing Monte Irvin, Dusty Rhodes, Bobby Thompson, Sal Maglie etc dressed up in those bright orange jerseys really took something away from the moment.
I dont know if the Mets were being cheap, or if there was just no place to get a retro uniform at the time.

I think some of the uniforms today are very ugly. Especially the baggy pants look worn down to the shoetops, all the jewelry, crazy hair................now why am I thinking of Manny Ramirez?

I coach a Fall baseball team every season (I coach a Spring team too) here in Yuma. As the manager, I get to pick and choose the team names, uniforms (we have them made) - with input from the kids, of course (and the sponsor - never want to forget the ol' sponsor).

Anyway, in the Fall of 2004, I coached an Oriole team with the Orange shirts, but we used black pants. It looked pretty good, pretty colorful and the kids, parents......and sponsor liked it. The following Fall, we maintained the Oriole name, but went to black shirts and white pants. The kids liked that better.

Last season, we were the Cardinals - the kids opted for an all-red shirt, with the Cardinal red, cap - with white pants. It looked very good.

At the end of the season, Bengie Molina, the Giant catcher who resides here in Yuma (right around the block from me), attended our final party. One of Bengie's friends from Puerto Rico lives in Yuma also and the friend's kid was my ace pitcher. A good guy, who had fun and took several photos with the kids. Many of the kids attend school with, and know Bengie's daughter.

When Bengie saw the red, Cardinal shirt he laughed and suggested that his brother, Yadier, should have come to the party.

But man, what a pitching foursome that was!!!!! Cuellar, Dobson, McNally and Palmer.
