  • Most overrated pitchers

    OK, might as well do this too, since I made a "underrated" thread.

    I imagine Nolan Ryan will top most people's lists here.
    Red, it took me 16 years to get here. Play me, and you'll get the best I got.

      THANK YOU!

            --You know we probably ought to define what we mean by overrated - as in overrated by whom. Nolan Ryan has been mentioned a couple of times here and he is no doubt overrated by casual fans. OTOH, Ryan is probably underrated a little here and by serious fans, especially sabermetrically inclined fans. Ryan's K's and no hitters don't make him anything close to the best pitcher ever, as some less enlightened folk would have him. He was an outstanding pitcher for a long time though.

              I'm leaning more towards us at BBF. After all of the studying, analysis and rankings we've done so far, who do you feel gets overrated here at BBF? Same thing with the "underrated" thread. I guess there's been alot of threads that have discussed who gets over and underrated by the casual fan, so now it's time to take a look at US - the students of the game.

                --Then I'd say Christy Mathewson, although he did slide back a little in this year's pitcher polls. As a group I think we peg the pitchers pretty well though. A few guys I think are underrated here, but nobody is grossly overrated.

                  I think everyone here agrees ryan is vastly overrated. That said, Sandy koufax is slightly overrated.

                  Koufax's 4 years of " Dominance" (1963-66) were more a product of Dodger Stadium. Here's his Home/Away splits for those 4 years:

                  IP=612.7/580
                  Shut Outs=21/10
                  WHIP=0.81/1.02
                  ERA=1.31/2.48
                  HR/9=0.41/0.74
                  Doubles+Triples/9=0.81/1.32

                  The NL average for those same 4 years:

                  WHIP=1.32
                  ERA=3.49
                  HR/9=0.79
                  Doubles+Triples/9=1.56

                  While Koufax was indeed good on the road he was by no means dominating. Dodger Stadium obviously was huge help.

                    I don't think Carlton or Feller are overrated here at BBF- on the contrary, i feel that people peg them both pretty well. They were both dominant in their eras, whether with good teams or bad, both very consistent, both amazingly good, and both had both great career and great individual season numbers, but there are very few here who put them in their all time top ten lists when we do those threads.

                    On the other hand, i don't think Bob Gibson was nearly as good as people seem to think on all the "best pitchers" threads, and that neither Newhouser or Waddell were overrated, but are, rather, quite underrated as pitching talents.

                    Hoyt Wilhelm doesn't seem to get too much cred on this forum, he seems more the forgotten type, but I certainly rank him as one of the best eer.
                    "Here's a crazy thought I've always had: if they cut three fingers off each hand, I'd really be a great hitter because then I could level off better." Paul Waner (lifetime .333 hitter, 3,152 lifetime hits.

                      The current pitchers poll has Feller at 12th best ever, which is just too high

                      <On the other hand, i don't think Bob Gibson was nearly as good as people seem to think on all the "best pitchers" threads>

                      He didn't seem to dominate certain areas like you'd expect

                      <and that neither Newhouser or Waddell were overrated, but are, rather, quite underrated as pitching talents.>

                      Waddell is WAY underrated

                      I rank him about 40th, and that's among ALL pitchers including starters and Hoyt was primarily a reliever, so if that isn't props ...
