  • Players who made a Splash in the World Series, but otherwise non-important

What players can you think of who made a splash in the World Series (Maybe even won MVP) but otherwise had lousy careers

Some I have come up with

    Don Larsen
    Johnny Podres
    Brian Doyle

    Lousy career?
Try Al Weis, Billy Hatcher, Ricky Ledee, Jim Eisenreich, Mark Lemke, Jo-Jo White, Tim MCCarver

Billy Bates had more hits in the 1990 WS than in his entire Reds career.
The 1990 WS the end of his career. I guess at age 26 he had nothing left to prove and had fulfilled his dream.

Not the World Series but the NLCS: Francisco Cabrera.

Gene Larkin had an unspectacular career save for driving in the winning run in game seven of the 1991 Series. Though he did win 2 WS titles overall.

You beat me to it...I'd add Bill Bevens.

Tim McCarver... a lousy career?? 21 seasons in the bigs, including playing in 4 decades, a decent hitter and excellent handler of pitchers (ask Carlton). He didn't set the world on fire, but in my estimation, he didn't have anywhere near a 'lousy career'.

As far as the question at hand is concerned, I'll say Cookie Lavagetto, whose one hit in the '47 series generally put him in the same conversation with guys like Gionfriddo and Bevens, who all played their final games in that Series and yet all performed some heroics in it.

I can not include Johnny Podres or Tim McCarver on this list.
Gene Tenace never matched his 72 WS performance either, but that doesnt mean he had a lousy career.

I wouldn't say that Pepper Martin had a lousy career, but it wasn't as flashy as his 1931 WS performance would indicate. Same with Babe Adams.

He did score more than 53 runs once
