My mind told me 2007, but my heart said 2006.
I went with my heart. I remember him so desperately wanting to pull the team out of its funk that he started having heart problems...big contrast with Manny taking some time off for unknown reasons at the same point.

I know there was a big drop-off in HR, but I think 2007 was his best all around season.

He posted career highs - by far - in BA and OBP, hit 52 doubles and had his best season in OPS+ by a nice margin. He carried the offense during what was a bad year for Manny Ramirez.
      My top 10 players:

      1. Babe Ruth
      2. Barry Bonds
      3. Ty Cobb
      4. Ted Williams
      5. Willie Mays
      6. Alex Rodriguez
      7. Hank Aaron
      8. Honus Wagner
      9. Lou Gehrig
      10. Mickey Mantle

2007, yet for some reason people think he had a down year just because he only hit 35 HR and drove in 117 runs.

Funny thing is that 5 more seasons like '07 will probably make him Saber HOF worthy, but might not give him the raw stats to get in with the voters. 5 years like '05/'06 would get him in with the voters but would probably leave him less than Saber HOF worthy.

I have to say 2005. In my opinion, 2007 was a better year statistically (certainly up for debate), but I really felt that he was more of a leader for that team in 2005 and played a much bigger role (I'm a firm believer in looking at more than just numbers).

I remember Ortiz came up short when it mattered alot in 2007

              unlike the other 3 years

They won a world series with him as their best offensive player. I don't know how much more you want him to do.
