In my opinion the top 3 seasons are Gehrig, Foxx and Bagwell. If McGuire was clean he'd be on the same level as these 3.
I voted for Gehrig, although i wouldn't hold any objections if someone suggested Foxx's was better.

Is there a mistake on the Todd Helton line/ 2 HR 42 HR ?

To me, this is the very best season ever by a 1B...

Helton's SLG % is also wrong - it was .698, not .685. I've always been amazed that his OPS+ wasn't higher that year. I guess it's the park effect that brings it down to reality. .372/.463/.698 looks awesome at first glance though.

Also, Gehrig's OPS+ was 221, not 227, but I feel like I'm splitting hairs now. Regardless, I like Gehrig's season the best out of that list.

I don't think it was the best ever by a first basemen, but Norm Cash's 1961 deserves mention: .361/.487/.662, 41 HR, 132 RBI, 201 OPS+. 61 homers was special, but the MVP should've gone to Cash or Mantle in '61.

I realize I have no logic here, but then I was never a slave to logic, common sense or reason. You must forgive me my sins.
Thanks for an interesting thread, Patrick. Nice work. Good job.

--Shouldn't Norm Cash 1961 be on the list? I wouldn't call it #1, but it is definately better than some that made the cut.

Strikeouts are boring! Besides that, they're fascist. Throw some ground balls - it's more democratic.-Crash Davis

Well, it took two whale of a season to rank above his. But Lou/Jimmy were fantastic too. Sizz was great, but he was a god among other gods.
