  • Greatest Opening Day Moments (My First Thread)

    Hi.

I am a new member, but a long-time viewer of this forum.

    Here's some info about me:

My screenname is HomeRunHomer, but my real name is Chris.

I have been a Cleveland Indians fan since 1992. Looking forward to talking with Tribe fans!

I also love to talk about baseball past and present.

Anyway, with opening day coming up soon, I'd like to know what you consider some of the greatest moments to ever occur on opening day.

It can be a great game, great day for a player, etc.

It can be personal for you or historical overall.

Mythical SF Chronicle scouting report: "That Jeff runs like a deer. Unfortunately, he also hits AND throws like one." I am Venus DeMilo - NO ARM! I can play like a big leaguer, I can field like Luzinski, run like Lombardi. The secret to managing is keeping the ones who hate you away from the undecided ones. I am a triumph of quantity over quality. I'm almost useful, every village needs an idiot.

      Not More Indians

The best Opening Day? Simple. 2006 Cleveland Indians opening day in Milwaukee.

It's not just that we were able to purchase seventh row tickets right behind the dugout for ten dollars. It wasn't that it was so great to be able to cheer for the Indians and not have to leave town to do it.

This was the first time that my four year old son and I were able to go to a game. It was also exactly thirty years after my first game which also was in Milwaukee and also featured the Cleveland Indians.

My little guy was having no part of that fuzzy mascot, but we met some of the greatest people that came to those games. Plates on the cars from Ohio and Indiana and Kentucky, and Michigan. It was a real party feeeling at the park. It wasn't a drunkfest like opening day is for the Brewers when people make it to their one game of the seaon and couldn't tell you a thing about it due to the booze.

We go past the stadium every day on our way to school and he still talks about it at least once a week. He still hasn't quite grasped that we can't just go see the Tribe play here all the time, but if we ever have a chance to go to Cleveland or seem them here; he and I will be cheering until we have no more voice.

That was the greatest time for everyone that was there. Friendship, sport, and fresh air: This is what baseball is really about.

I remember watching Tuffy Rhodes hitting 3 home runs on Opening Day for the Cubs. That was a lot of fun to watch.

Not great by any means but the deaths of Doc Powers and John McSherry were certainly significant.

Sam Horn's greatest moment as a big leaguer. 2 homers to lead the Orioles to win on opening day 1990.

More recently it was pretty sweet to see Xavier Nady homer off of Brad Lidge with 2 out in the 9th to help the Bucs win their 2007 opener. Who knew it would be all downhill from there.
              LETS GO BUCS!!

Didn't George Bell hit three homers on Opening Day?

I headed down for the Bosox home opener a few years ago and got to hear Ray Charles sing "America The Beautiful" not long before he died. The game got called due to rain, but it was wonderful to see and hear Ray.

It was Winfields first as a Yankee and Bobby Murcer hit a jack to win the game.
                      The whole day was electric
