  • using best peak how do you rank this era's sluggers?

These are the top first base/DH's of the last 15 years or so

    alphabetical:

    jeff bagwell
    carlos delgado
    jason giambi
    travis hafner
    todd helton
ryan howard (has he hit his peak yet?)
    mark mcgwire
    david ortiz
    albert pujols
    mark teixera
    frank thomas
    jim thome

which ones stand out when they were at their best? are some of these guys over-rated?

which ones are and aren't HOFers? why?

    my list:

    frank thomas (HOF)
    albert pujols (HOF)
    jeff bagwell (HOF)
mark mcgwire* (would be HOF if he didn't get look like a fool infront of congress)
jason giambi* (honestly, stat wise he is an HOF caliber player)
david ortiz (ortiz needs to reach 400 HR and get an MVP to make the HOF in my eyes but the red sox will probably retire his #)
    jim thome (HOF)
ryan howard (way too early to tell)
todd helton (if you overlook Coors he may be HOFer but in my eyes there's plenty of guys who belong before him)
mark texiera (way too early to tell, the best defensively of the bunch easily)
    travis hafner (no chance)
carlos delgado (not an HOFer in my eyes but he was damn good)

uhhh.... the best defensively? Seriously?? over Helton? Have you ever seen or watch him? Helton is easily top 10 best defensive 1B of all time already. I have him in the top 5 and by the time he retires, will be the best ever. Also I have him over Keith Hernandez who a lot of people are high on (I know some other have Helton over Hernandez as well).

As far as the list goes...

      HOF:
      frank thomas
      albert pujols
      jeff bagwell
      jim thome

      Should be HOF:
mark mcgwire (should be in, but who knows... he's in mine)
todd helton (agree with you, i think he will be the first Rockies player to be in the HoF also his defensive skills should help him out here as well... still got a long way till he retires though... got a chance to get 700 doubles and be top 5)

      Maybe HOF:
jason giambi (a great peak but i don't know... depends on how he declines from here on out but I see an ugly one... might not even get a job after he leaves the Yankees, if so then No HOF for him)
david ortiz (agree with you... although I think he needs 500 HRs at least instead of 400 to have a 50/50 chance to get in since he's a DH)
carlos delgado (Depends on his decline like giambi.. voters like numbers and he's close to 500 doubles/500 HRs...)

      No HOF:
      travis hafner (agree with you)

Too Early: (if I had to guess though)
mark texiera (he is a hard one to guess at the moment but if he can walk a little more then i would say he's between maybe and should be but I can see him in due to being like Murray and Palmeiro where he rack up the numbers but didn't dominate or MVP type years)
ryan howard (depends on how long he can hit close to 50 HRs a year to make up for late start in age... I would say maybe)

ask me tomorrow and things can change...

Actually, I think they were about the same because I lettered in all sports, and I was a two-time state decathlon champion.

My sophomore year I placed 2nd, and my junior and senior year - I got smart and piled up enough points between myself and second place where I didn't have to run the mile.

My list doesn't make adjustments based on suspected steroid use. It's based on what actually happened. I've put them in order of how I rank them at the moment.

        Mark McGwire (Hall of Famer)
        Frank Thomas (Hall of Famer)
        Albert Pujols (Hall of Famer)
        Jeff Bagwell (Hall of Famer)
        Jim Thome (Hall of Famer)
        Jason Giambi
        Todd Helton
        Travis Hafner
        David Ortiz
        Carlos Delgado
        Ryan Howard
        Mark Teixeira

Bagwell grades out over Thome due to being much more valuable defensively.

McGwire's and Thomas' offensive peaks were amazing.
"In the end it all comes down to talent. You can talk all you want about intangibles, I just don't know what that means. Talent makes winners, not intangibles. Can nice guys win? Sure, nice guys can win - if they're nice guys with a lot of talent. Nice guys with a little talent finish fourth and nice guys with no talent finish last." --Sandy Koufax

Of course.... '00-'03. Howard peak is only 2 years... Delgado '00 season was amazing... I don't think Howard will ever match that season IMO. You can even say Delgado peak was from '98 to '06 but I would go up to '05. All Howard does better is hitting more HRs and Ks.
